About the Owner

Hi this is a photo of Geoff and I, Bethan and Lewis on the roof terrace in 2006 when the house was first restored. We live in Northamptonshire and first visited Essaouira in 2004 and fell in love with the town and the wonderful people. Darsal was deralict when we first purchased it with no elcetricity or running water. We put a lot of time and thought into restoring the Riad and have had many lovely holidays there since. Bethan and Lewis still enjoy visiting and lots of happy memories of childhood holidays in Darsal.

Thank you, we all had a fantastic time in Essaouira- everyone was very friendly, we were really quite sad to leave. We really fell in love with the place, and intend to return Oct '08. Aeida is a wonderful person, she helped make our stay very special indeed. Your house is lovely, we particulary loved the terrace, and truly enjoyed our stay there. Once again, thank you very much. K Willaims August 07.

The riad was lovely - loads of room to spread out and find some peace and who would of thought that behind the front door there would be such a haven of tranquillity right in the middle of the medina? Ayeda lived up to her reputation and cooked what were probably the best meals we had whilst in Morocco. Nourredine was very helpful in setting up the excursions and providing some local insights. We had a really good holiday and we shall certainly come back to Essaouira. Thanks once again for the use of your riad - we had a very memorable and

enjoyable holiday and we would like to retur

Fantastic holiday in Darsal Essaouira

  • 5 of 5

Loved Darsal. It was perfect for a family plus grandmother. Four teenage kids were a bit squeezed into a two double bed set-up (to ensure grandmother was accommodated in a large ensuite) but we knew that in advance and they were fine. Otherwise, very spacious, atmospheric and beautifully furnished accommodation, with plenty of room for everyone to find their own cosy corner if they wanted. Excellent WiFi which was a non-negotiable pre-condition (unfortunately) for the teenagers. Fantastic location in the Medina which is easy to navigate once you've got your bearings. We noted an edge of town Carrefour on a bicycle trip, but everything we needed was available in the great variety of stores in the Medina. We enjoyed Aeida's homecooked tagines (and chat!) on two occasions and, of course, dined out either in the Medina or along the beach front. Take-away crepes also proved popular. Breakfast on the rooftop was particularly memorable (we preferred doing our own breakfast). We did also cook a few of our own dinners and, for our needs, the facilities in both kitchen areas (yes, there are two!) were ideal. We were well looked after by Fouad who speaks excellent English and has a sixth sense as to what might be suitable excursions for guests. On one day trip out we took a tourist taxi and had a fantastic very professional French-speaking guide - a grand-taxi would have been cheaper but we wouldn't have gained as much from the trip. There's lots of great activities to do in Essaouira (horse-riding and biking were our "active" bits), but our abiding memories will be of a laid back seaside town with warm, friendly locals - a great place to chill and recharge the batteries. And Darsal was the perfect base - the restoration of this house/riad has clearly been a labour of love - a good sign is that the owners use it as their own holiday home.

Beautiful but missing essentials

  • 3 of 5

The property is an attractive residence in central Essaouira. The beds are good and lots off hot water.

We rented the Riad because it was meant to be self catering, but the cooking utensils were primitive -for example : -no cutting board , buckled fry pan that didn't sit flat on the stove , no suitable saucepans except for one small aluminum saucepan with out a lid and a huge pressure cooker with out the pressure weight ( therefore useless) Self catering was difficult and frustrating.

Beautifully equipped Riad in the centre of the old medina. Good communication with host and owner.

We enjoyed a wonderful week in the beautiful Darsal. The house is well equipped and comfortable within easy walk of the beach, port, shops and many restaurants. The housekeeper is lovely and lives close so is able to be on hand when wanted without being intrusive. The local man who looks after the house speaks English and was always efficient and on time with taxis, porters and information.

A magic carpet

  • 5 of 5

The approach to Dar Sal is down a little side street which doesn't look too promising - but fear not - open the door and you are in a palace. The design is breathtaking - every room and every floor has lovely features. Much time and thought has clearly gone into making Dar Sal the most wonderful place to stay in Essaouria. Even sea views from the top terraces! Parking was easy and safe and the staff (Fouad and Aeida) are very friendly and helpful. I would recommend to friends wanting a lovely spacious place.

We really enjoyed our stay at riad darsal it is situated in an ideal location in the heart of the medina even the drum maker who worked along the end of the street got used to us walking to and fro each day. We had breakfast every morning cooked by aeida there was lots of variety. We did not opt for evening meals at the riad with aeida because we all had such different tastes. The riad had lots of character the floors are stunning and the morrocan lamps and lighting give it a beautiful ambience we went on a day trip to Marrakech. there were 6 of us in the party and we had our own driver to take us there. Fouad the house manager came with us which was good as he was able to explain where he was dropping us off and when he would pick us up. He was very attentive and gave us choices of things to do whilst there. we loved the souk in Marrakech. We went on a Monday day and it was so much more relaxed than I ever imagined it would be in terms of pressure selling fouad said it is busier later in the week in Marrakech. Once we had got the feel of Essaouria it began to work its charms on us. We loved the hundreds of little shops all over the medina and the little squares with hidden cafes and restaurants. The music shops with gnawa music playing and lots of live music in little bars throughout the town. Aeida was so lovely and helped us to look for scarves. Her son showed my son where to go to get certain food items. She lit the fire for us when we could not get it going. We arrived at essourria airport and were picked up promptly by taxi and delivered safely into fouad a safe hands at bab Marrakech a great stay getting around was easy and taxi was cheap loved it thank you

Very comfortable; good location and quiet

  • 4 of 5

Located in the Medina; 5 mins walk from food market; 10 mins to beach; loads of restaurants within 10 mins walk. Carrefour about a mile and a half - 7 Dirham by petite taxi. Alcohol shop 10-15 mins walk in a industrial/run down part of town. Never felt threatened and very little hassle. Most people very friendly. Weather was perfect for us - mid 20s most days and calm at this time of year. Riad is along an alley which is run down. Property was as advertised. Good facilities. Lots of living space and 2 sun terraces. Any concern was sorted swiftly ie we ran out of gas and this was replaced in an hour or so. Aidea's breakfast's were great - we only had this every other day as one day's food lasted for two. Good stock of books (mainly English language) and games. Very relaxing but not a lot to do for someone as restless as me.

Negatives - roof terrace furniture is a bit the worse for wear. Terraces themselves are bare. Bedsheets were clean but a bit grubby. It's difficult to keep things clean in this environment.

Very good value for money.

Owner's Response: Hi I'm pleased you had a good holiday. The terrace is bare except for the furniture due to the weather conditions it can get misting and damp in the evenings in the winter. I appologise for the bedsheets as they were only replaced early 2015. I will check they are being washed correctly and review them when we stay next month. thank you

From the Owner

Darsal is a lovely property, we loved Essaouira, it's people and the the old medina. It has a wonderful feel of being somewhere colourful and viberant, whilst being set in a quiet street in the centre, you can get away from it all and still only a stones throw from the beach, souks and cafe's.

Essaouira his a charming ancient Medina (walled town), it has a colourful and vibrant center with many mysterious and interesting streets and souks to explore. All within walking distance are the historic Portuguese ramparts, a small working fishing port with it's traditional blue boats bringing in the daily catch and the 3 mile long beach, where there are a variety of water sports available. There are no cars allowed inside the Medina, which gives it a very hassle free atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants which offer a variety of Moroccan, French and Italian cuisine. The climate is temperate and rarely gets above mid 30's. There are many sports and activities available in the area.

Other Activities: land yatching, kite surfing, camel riding, historic sites, small traditional port, souks, hamman, 4x4 off roading and quad biking

From the Owner

Darsal is full of surprises, you approach it from a quiet narrow street and once you open the front dooe, you enter into a room with a little couryard and lovely sitting areas. It then goes on to the first floor with a light airy master bedroom and a second bedroom, with a mezzanine bed which we built especially for Lewis, as a den. He had seen one in another riad we had visited. the main lounge is on the next floor, all open plan and a lovely area for relaxing, reading and children to play. There is a kitchen area, great for taking cool drinks up to the terrace. Once up on the terrace is a little onsuite bedroom with a lovely large window to let in all the light. A brilliant house to explore!
