About Rosemary and Noel Jacks

Noel and Rosemary Jacks have lived in Musbury since 1993, bringing up their children there and getting involved in village life. Noel was born in East Devon and is a well established landscape gardener, while Rosemary, originally from Kent, is a potter, selling her work locally and throughout the UK. They bought Old Bakery Musbury in 2015.

Why Rosemary and Noel Jacks chose Axminster

We always loved Old Bakery Musbury, so when the previous owners decided to sell we took the opportunity to make it our own. Through the winter and spring of 2015/2016 we have carried out extensive renovation and modernisation, carefully refurbishing each room with modern comforts and facilities but maintaining the traditional character of the property.

The Axe Valley is a beautiful part of the country with rolling hills, and the meandering river opening out in the Axe estuary ( a wildlife hotspot and haven for bird watching) and then out to the sea at Axmonth Harbour. Musbury is a great spot for walkers and is on the East Devon way. The far reaching views from Musbury Castle, an ancient hill fort are not to be missed.

What makes this cottage unique

The living accomadation of Old Bakery Musbury is on the first floor which means the property is light and airy, with the original roof beams adding height and making it feel very spacious. The sun terrace is a real sun trap, ideal for an alfresco breakfast and the walled garden gives privacy and soaks up the sun. The flat lawn is a great area for children to play and let off steam.

The property has gas central heating throughout, while the addition of a woodburning stove gives a cosy feel on chilly winters nights.

Two bathrooms make this an ideal bolt hole for friends wanting to get away for a while but not wanting to share a bathroom and the Juliet balcony, where the flour was once hauled from below into the loft, is a charming feature.

Downstairs offers a large lobby to leave muddy boots and coats, buggies and bikes, and houses the washing machine and laundry equipment.

Old Bakery Musbury is located just a short walk from the Golden Hind pub. New owners Emma and Adrian are doing a great job. The pub now offers an extensive menu of home cooked food, and a refreshed range of drinks including a selection of real ales and guest beers. Well worth a visit and very convenient,

Guestbook comments from the owner

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Rosemary and Noel, A great cottage everything you need or want is catered for, a lovely welcome pack including prosecco in fridge which went down a treat 😀 great garden fully enclosed for dogs. Lovely log burner which we used everyday due to having lots of snow outside gave us a really cosy feel. Great pub about 30 steps from the front door, had 35+gins which we tried our best to get through !! Food was great highly recommended very welcoming landlord and landlady . Would I stay again defiantly.

Lovely

  • 5 of 5

Very clean, and good location to explore the coastal towns. We came to fossil hunt, so wanted somewhere as a good base. We went to the pub down the street almost every night for dinner. The gas station also is well stocked. We were able to park on the street in front of the rental every night. Rosemary and Noel were very good hosts!

Delightful and Charming Cottage in quiet Village

  • 5 of 5

The stay was just wonderful and the cottage was everything we could have asked for. Very clean, cosy, bright, tidy and was perfect stay for 4 adults and 1 child. I was expecting poky but was very surprised. Within 10 minutes to the coast i.e. Lyme Regis, Seaton and Beer and one could not ask for more. At the end of 3 days we did not want to leave. We will definately be back. A perfect 360 day location. Thank you Rosemary.

lovely cottage just 10mins from the sea

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in the Old Bakery Cottage for 3 nights over the bank holiday and loved it. Musbury has some lovely walks close by and the cottage had everything we needed. The lounge and log burner were just what we needed after a walk along the coast.

Rosemary and Noel were very welcoming, cottage had all the facilities we could need as a family of 5 and was well positioned for exploring the local area. Secure garden was a plus for a well behaved dog or for summer drinks and BBQ! Would thoroughly recommend.

Old Bakery Musbury in the Axe Valley is the perfect place to base your West Country holiday, with close access to beautiful coast and countryside and numerous places to visit.

Local attractions include Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's widely acclaimed River Cottage Canteen (Axminster) and HQ (Musbury) for dining, courses and events. Visit the farm and soak up the atmosphere of the the TV programmes location.

Trill Farm (Musbury) offers courses on sustainable living and seasonal home grown dining.

Castlewood Vineyard (including a wine festival in June) and Lyme Bay winery offer wine tasting

The dramatic Jurassic coastline of Lyme Regis is a backdrop for an array of attractions and events. These include the Fossil festival, a Jazz festival, Food Rocks, Lifeboat week and the Folk Festival as well as the sandy beach, unique independant shops and galleries, and a wide selection of restaurants and cafes. The Town Mill hosts an ever changing calendar of exhibitions and events in its two galleries, and brings together the well established local arts scene. Lyme Regis and Charmouth are also the places to go fossil hunting.

The beautiful Regency town of Sidmouth is a must visit during any stay in the area. It's long promenade, magnificent coastal cliffs and beautiful buildings host an interesting town centre with many independent shops, galleries and restaurants. The town takes on a different feel during the first week in August when the Sidmouth Folk Week takes over the town. Many nationally and internationally acclaimed folk artists perform during the week long event, and there are many events for those with different tastes, including street entertainment and buskers and a vibrant market along the seafront.

At Axmouth there is a lovely golf course high on the cliffs overlooking the sea while below in Seaton, the Seaton Tramway takes a romantic trip through the Axe Valley to Colyton with plenty of opportunity for bird watching on the way and a cream tea at Colyton station. Next to the Tramway start is the newly opened, fully interactive, Seaton Jurassic centre which explores the history of the area and its geological importance.

Head east from Musbury to Bridport you will find another charming town with a lively art and theatre culture. On Saturdays and Wednesdays the town hosts a large market with over 100 stalls including a well established antiques and collectibles quarter, local crafts, as well as great food, plants and household items.

Further on from Bridport you can take the coast road to Abbotsbury (a stunning drive with views along Chesil beach) where in spring you can see newly hatched swans at Abbotsbury Swannery and visit the delightful village with its distinctive yellowy sandstone cottages.

Dorchester and Weymouth also offer interesting destinations including many attractions connected to Thomas Hardy and his books and also great walks along the Wessex Ridge way.

For those with children at visit to Crealy adventure park is a must, as well as a trip to Charmouth for fossil hunting. Axe Valley Wildlife Park is a small and friendly zoo (the absolutely favourite of our tiny twin niece and nephew).

Exeter is a fine city with a large new shopping centre and John Lewis, a great Museum, RAMM, and other attractions including the Underground Passages and Exeter Quay.

Taunton has a good shopping centre and the beautiful Somerset levels on its doorstep.

And no trip would be complete without a visit to Dartmoor (about 1 hour).
