About the property

Rural and Rustic & close to Sardinia's stunning beaches

Outstanding spacious holiday accommodation located just outside of the historic medival village of Martis Sardinia. IL Granaio in Martis Sardinia is an idyllic country barn/villa attached to an historic country house which is 20/25 minutes from the beautiful beaches of the north coast of Sardinia. Immersed deep in the countryside, yet close enough to the coast to enjoy the Sardinias stunning beaches. Il Granaio is completely private & self contained and the villa has access to an orchard with an above ground pool. Price shown is for 2 persons, the open plan living space can accommodate 4 There are many acres to wander in and explore - we have a little vintage roulette caravan in the orchard for your gypsy days! Bedroom is Mezzanine style, there is a double day bed and a single sofa bed in the living space. The shower & toilet are on the upper floor. Il Granaio has a fully equipped kitchen and shower/toilet dressing room on the upper level. The owners Chris and Jill are english and have been resident in Sardinia for 9 years. They live in the main house and maintain a very low profile but will also be there if you need any help or information. Outside there is a large ivy clad courtyard furnished with tables chairs for outside dining. There are seating and sunbathing spots dotted around the land. Down in the orchard is a welcoming above ground pool, ideal for those long hot summer days. Little Rosa Roulotte is tucked under the shade of the pineta trees, why not stay for a while, read a book and have a glass of wine or just fall asleep and dream in a one of the hammocks.Il Granaio has wonderful views of the village, San Pantaleo church and the stunning Monte Limbara mountains. Il Granaio - 'The barn' - was a used to house barley and feed for animals many years ago. In 2014 it was converted into a beautiful self contained & private dwelling with stunning grounds and many outside relaxing and dining areas. The studio is 12mt x 4mt very very spacious! Il Granaio opens up on to a large private ivy clad courtyard which is suitable for al-fresco dining and relaxing. Martis is very quiet and only has a few shops so this is not the place for wild nightlife! A drive to the beaches takes around 20/25 minutes. The villa is probably best suited to those with older children. There are high stairs to the bedroom, bathroom and a balcony which may prove a hazard for little ones. Children under 2 years upon arrival are free.

About Chris Johnson

We are an English couple who moved here in 2009 - we took a chance and brought Ca Tupa D'Orzo having fallen in love with Sardinia. To this day the island takes our breath away. We renovated the house and in 2013 IL Granaio which was an old grain & animal barn was converted into turned into spacious studio/villa accommodation so that you can enjoy this stunning country too! We are both semi retired but still work like troupers managing the estate. The villa is attached to the main house which is rich in history. We maintain a low profile at all times unless you require some help or information.

Chris Johnson purchased this barn in 2009

Why Chris Johnson chose Chiaramonti

This is an area of natural beauty, peace and calm. Everything we always wanted, away from traffic and modern day living. When we first came to Sardinia we were shocked at how stunning the beaches were and how little we new of the island. We now realise how diverse and stunning this place is.

What makes this barn unique

Views, countryside colours, rural sights and sounds and what made us fall in love with IL Granaio and the house. The main house is ancient and possesses many mysteries we are yet to solve.

This converted barn and its facilities added much to our fabulous week on the interesting island of Sardinia.

Owned by a British couple (Jill was away during our stay) it was useful to know there was support available if needed - they live in the house to which the barn is attached. After an informative introduction from Chris, he took no further part in our stay unless invited by us - great!

The accommodation is spacious, though during our stay was hardly used - the weather meaning we were mostly outside on the terrace when not exploring the island. The conversion is 'unusual' with the bedroom on a mezzanine floor at one end, with the bathroom and toilet facilities being at the other end. This involved down stairs and up stairs to move from one area to another - NOT A PROBLEM, indeed quite fun!

Situated a short walk outside Martis village it gave a complete feeling of isolation - paradise. The village meant there were all facilities available, bars, supermarkets and the best pizza we have ever had!

The grounds associated with the property are extensive, and although we did not partake of the pool in the orchard, we did hold a birthday breakfast alfresco in the field next to the terrace - such things are memories made of.

On an important level, we certainly felt that it was very worth the price paid. All admin involved with the rental went smoothly.

Owner's Response: Thank you so so much for the wonderful review! I am so sorry I was unable to join you and Bev at the apartment. Chris tells me you were delightful considerate people and a joy to be of service too. Reviews are so important for a little set up like ours, we hang on every word and try to improve where necessary. We will pass your compliments on to Rita and Franco at Angolino bar, yes how lucky are we to have the best pizza in Sardinia!! I hope I get to meet you both if you decide to consider Sardinia for a breakaway another time, and in answer to your note in the apartment - yes I will sing you a few bars at no extra charge:) Jill and Chris Johnson

very quiet and rural not for anyone in search of night life

  • 4 of 5

Property was well maintained. Clean and tidy. Had everything needed to cater for ourselves. Could have done with a bit more info on the places to eat in the evenings. The type of food served and exactly where they were in the villages and what time they opened.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to give us a review. Yes, Martis is definitely not the place for clubbers or those seeking the party life! We hopefully make that clear in our initial description? Noted - the further information needed for restaurants, we will elaborate for our future guests and once again, it was a pleasure meeting you.

The property was very clean and well presented and well equipped. We immediately felt at home there.

The owners of the property were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. It was amazing that we could pick fresh figs, lemons and oranges from the garden. Over the week we kept finding little presents of home produce and nuts to sample. The property was well kitted out for our cooking needs and we enjoyed relaxing in the patio area, which was well supplied with chairs, tables and a barbeque set. We also went for a pizza in the village of Martis, which was really delicious. We hired a car and visited various places along the coast. The nearest beach in Valledoria became our favourite haunt, although the beach in Lu Bagnu was also very pleasant. Once we had got to grips with the roads, we had no problems getting around the island. The prices in Sardinia are very reasonable and so we were able to have a wonderful holiday without spending a fortune. We can thoroughly recommend this property and the delightful owners. Hopefully we can return to Sardinia some time soon. Thanks again to Jill and Chris for making our stay so memorable.

As you realise this is our first year with various holiday company sites so we value the opinions of lovely people like yourselves. It is a real pleasure when guests are so warm and appreciative. The property was left immaculate by the way!! I know Sardinia proved special to you both so we hope you will visit the island again sometime soon.

Rural bliss

  • 5 of 5

The property was immaculate and very well equipped with everything as described and we were especially impressed with all the little extras that make so much difference. Relaxing in the orchard with our own pool was wonderful and the privacy, quiet and solitude was so relaxing. Jill & Chris were there if we needed anything and we often returned from trips out to find little 'presents' like fresh fruit & veg. The area is very scenic and interesting to explore and about half an hour to some lovely beaches. Franco and Rita in Bar Angolino in the village are very welcoming and the food is very reasonable. Sardinia is an island of very varied aspects and two weeks was not nearly enough to explore. We would definitely recommend staying here.

beautyful house far away from mass tourism

  • 5 of 5

I was there with my daughter for 8 days. what can i say was a real great time there. The house was exactly that ,what i was looking for. a very silent place , without traffic noise and far away from mass tourism. in the house is to find everything you need for your holiday. Mister Johnson and his wife are very friendly people. it was a pleasure to learn to know them ...even just a little bit. they made for us 2times a very good menü for the evening and gave us some good tips. for sure i`ll come back again in a other period , when the island is green .My daughter was always happy to play with the cat TRUMPI , and she miss him already. I can advice that house for everyone . It would be a good choice to make holiday there. sorry for the unperfect english ... anyway i hope its to understand.

Owner's Response: Hello Antony & Nadege! It was an absolute pleasure sharing our little part of Sardinia with you. Also thank you for such a lovely review, we really do appreciate your time and effort to give us your thoughts. Reviews are very important to us on this our first year with Homeaway/Owners Direct. We also ask Home and Away to take note of the problem with fees for our clients - details should be made clearer for all holiday makers. This transaction for our french guests was very confusing and a little unfair as they booked hours after the company introduced an additional booking fee.

Car: necessary

This was one of the most unusual properties we viewed on the island. We don't know all of the history, it is thought there is a strong connection with the ruined medieval church San Pantaleo opposite. Everyday our views change, the area is magical. The mystery of the land and house creates a fantastic atmosphere. At night light pollution is minimal so star gazing is a must. Sheep and their dogs roam free. The dogs are an unusual sight because they blend with the sheeps coat. They manage the herds alone, it is a sight to see them escorting the flock along the windy roads.
