The sound of silence!

A delightful cottage set in a tranquil country setting. The cottage is full of character and enjoys views in all directions, over farmland, northwards toward the Cheviot Hills and southwards towards Thrunton Woods.

This cared-for cottage is spacious but cosy and provides an ideal base to relax for the day or from which to explore. Rothlea is only 10 minutes drive from Alnwick, home to the Duke of Northumberland, visit Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Garden, Museum and the famous Barter Bookssecond hand bookshop. Rothbury, with small local shops and lovely views is only quarter of an hour away - drive past The National Trust's Cragside House and Gardens along the way.

The coast and Cheviot Hills are within 20 minutes or perhaps you'd prefer to enjoy walking from the property up to Thrunton Woods or an hour's circular walk around the village.

Steps down from the gravelled parking area to a west facing entrance porch.

The solid oak front door leads to a compact hall with shoe box, main staircase and access to the large open-plan sitting room. The beamed ceilings, log burning stove, huge stone fireplace and large sofas provide atmosphere and character and charm to this tranquil room. There is a snug area behind the fireplace offering more space. The large flatscreen television, Blue ray DVD player, Video and stereo midi system and wireless internet access are all available or just settle onto one of the two large sofas with a holiday book to read. The stripped pine cupboard has a selection of books, DVDs videos, games and local guides.

Two steps lead down to the hall which has an oak desk, telephone for emergency or incoming calls, Wi-Fi or Ethernet internet connection, information folders, maps, guides etc. Views over pastures to the rear, a coat rack with hooks and access one way to the shower room or through a glazed door to the kitchen.

The shower room has a semi circular shower cubicle with electric shower, an airing cupboard, heated towel rail, wash hand basin and WC with views over the fields!

The fully fitted kitchen/diner has a beamed ceiling, double oven electric cooker, ceramic hob, dishwasher, washing machine, walk-in pantry, microwave, fridge/freezer, old stripped pine table and digital radio with ipod/mp3 input connection. The bay window gives panoramic views over the fields towards the hills behind Alnwick.

There is a rear porch with glazed door, spare seating, shoe rack and bird food tin.

Step down to a private enclosed yard with open views, a bird table and a garden bench - ideal for a cup of morning coffee in the sun.

Bedroom 1: the main bedroom has a king sized bed, sloping ceiling, wall of fitted wardrobes and panoramic views from the west facing bay window.

Bedroom 2: a smaller room with single sleigh bed, gentleman's wardrobe chest, sloping ceiling and east facing views over grass pastures.

Separate small cloakroom with wash hand basin and WC.

Oil fired central heating and wood burning stove.

Heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and an initial supply of logs included - more wood can be purchased locally at the petrol station.

Bird tables at both the front and rear of the cottage, private off road parking.

Garden seating available at the front and rear of the cottage.

Telephone for incoming and emergency calls. Wireless broadband.

Lovely, quiet, well-equipped cottage, with gentle views over sheep fields and hills

We only had five days there, but it had everything we needed; it was peaceful, with welcoming neighbours in a tiny hamlet, just outside the lovely village of Whittingham; there are plenty of local walks, even if some have been blocked, apparently by farmers, it was with a few miles of Alnwick with its castle, gardens and numerous independent shops and places to eat and cafes; slightly further on is the wonderful Northumberland coastline, small bays and long, largely empty beaches.

In the other direction is the national Trust's 'Cragside' estate, especially fascinating for any with an interest in water engineering and garden creation; beyond them are the Northumbrian hills and Kielder water.

We will be back!

Lovely cottage in a beautiful location but more upkeep needed

Our first impressions of the cottage were very good - it is in a lovely location and nicely furnished. However, the upstairs toilet failed to flush and when we phoned the owner (tired after a our v. long car journey) to let her know, she not only answered the phone in a rude manner but was dismissive of the problem. She told us that the plumber had been out to it several times and said there was nothing wrong with it - the handle just needed holding down. Not only was her manner very unwelcoming but it made it apparent to us that this was a longstanding problem. We were able to use the toilet but the flush was erratic and didn't always work and in our opinion the owner, knowing I was problematic, should have replaced it. Sadly the owner didn't bother to get back to us to enquire after it which would have been a polite thing to do. We found other things we weren't too happy with as well. There were extremely flat and uncomfortable seats on the main sofa, a long exposed wire by the smaller sofa, not enough lighting in the kitchen making it difficult to read the cooker dials and very disappointingly the outside area at the back was completely run down and unattractive with only pots of dead plants for decoration. Finally, we also felt no care had been taken us to welcome us to the cottage. Traditionally and at all the other cottages we have stayed at a welcome tray or basket is left for the incoming guests. Cups and saucers were left and there was milk in the fridge, but we had to root in the cupboards around for a teabag and eventually found some at the back of the cupboard next to a bottle of six month out of date salad dressing and a small amount of hard sugar in a dirty jar. For us a packet of biscuits just dumped on the table near the cups seemed to sum up the lack of care and thought that had gone into the finer details of the whole of this property. For instance a welcoming note on the table would have been a nice gesture. Obviously properties are let by the owners for commercial reasons but it is important to make guests to feel welcomed as well and we didn't .

We never thought anyone would be concerned about a spare television aerial cable, it is plastered into the wall and we leave it to give future flexibility. We will obviously think more carefully about it's presence now. Magical cottage in a magical county!

This is a very special cottage in a very beautiful location - we feel very lucky to have found it! Northumberland is a stunning county - SO much to see - and Rothlea Cottage is in an ideal spot to venture out and see it all - coast - castles - Cheviots - with the bonus of a beautiful 'home' to come back to each evening. We couldn't have been happier. Thank you!
