Beautiful cottage with private pool near Riberac in the Dordogne

Updated: 26-Oct-2016
3 Bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Our beautiful 3 bedroom detached cottage has been recently restored with the latest contemporary fixtures. New for 2013 is a modern extension to the side of the property which complements the traditional charm of the original building. This makes a large kitchen/diner with bi-fold doors opening the full length of the room overlooking the garden, the pool and the open countryside beyond. The previous kitchen has now been transformed and used as a snug, so somewhere peaceful to sit and relax with a good book. From the terrace enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside which together with the large private pool ensures that you can unwind & relax from the moment you arrive. Appreciate the pleasures of outdoor dining on the terrace with fresh local produce and watch the sunset across the valley. The cottage offers a convenient base close to Riberac to explore picturesque villages and the local countryside of the Dordogne. Take a picnic along the river or sample one of the many great restaurants. For the more sporty - cycling, swimming, canoeing, tennis and horse riding are nearby. Alternatively just take advantage of the peace and tranquility of life at 'Les Volets Verts'.

Outdoor Activities:

Renamon (approx. 12kms) is situated on the River Dronne. Here you can hire canoes, relax on the small beach and there is a cafe/bar for your refreshments. In the evenings there is often live music.

Grand etang de la Jemaye (approx. 22 kms) is a great lake for swimming (overseen by lifeguards) with a sandy beach. Enjoy your own lunch in the picnic area or treat yourself at the cafe. Other activities close to the cottage include horse riding, bicycles for hire, tennis, fishing & there is even a couple of 9 hole golf courses which are pay as you play.

Cultural visits:

Riberac - famed for its Friday morning market selling local produce. Wander through the huge variety of stalls & then relax in one of the many cafe/bars & soak up the atmosphere.

Grotte de Villars - the largest underground network in the Perigord, admire the frozen rivers, stalactites & stalagmites. Guided tours are provided with a sound & light show and it also offers a picnic area & a cafe.

Bourdeilles - visit the medieval chateau in this ancient attractive village. The chateau is a 13th century fortress and a Renaissance residence.

Aubeterre sur Dronne - another pretty village with wonderful views of the Dordogne countryside with the monolithic Eglise St Jean - carved out of the white chalky cliff.

Brantome - often described as the 'Venice of Perigord' as it is surrounded on all sides by the river Dronne. Outside Brantome is the Renaissance Chateau de Puyguilhem decorated inside with tapestries. Many other 'things to do' are detailed in our information pack.

Dining Out: We have listed in the 'Welcome Handbook' our favourite restaurants from a wide choice & we look forward to you adding to the list with your comments. Most restaurants offer a fixed price menu for 2, 3, 4 or even 5 courses providing great value for money especially at lunchtime which is considered to be the most important meal of the day. Sample the regional delights of south west France - 'foie gras', 'confit' & goats cheese. More locally, walnuts are produced in abundance & are used in everything from salads to desserts.

We had the pleasure of staying here for 2 weeks.

From start to finish we enjoyed every minute, totally relaxing.

The communication from the owner was excellent even from the point of when we got lost ( our fault ) on arrival.

As mentioned in previous post the view all round was amazing. The accommodation was very spacious everything you needed was there.

In the 2 weeks we were there we enjoyed 30c + so we all made very good use of the pool, the garden area ( which was not overlooked ).

All in all no hesitation to recommend this property.

Hope to return soon.

A beautiful property with outstanding views

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a very relaxing holiday in this beautiful gite. As previous reviewers have said the photos really don't do it justice and we were blown away when we arrived.

The gite is large and very well equipped with the most beautiful views. The terrace is wonderful and so picturesque. The pool is great and large, so plenty of room for ourselves and 2 teenage children to swim and relax.

The booking process was straightforward with Christine being very helpful in answering any queries that we had. Steve and Gill, the property caretakers were lovely and also very helpful.

We had so much fun relaxing at the gite that we didn't go out much other than to Verteillac, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and Brantome - all of which were lovely. We would highly recommend Les Volets Verts if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. I don't know how we are going to find anything else to top this in future!

Relaxing Stay in a Stunning Location

  • 5 of 5

Set in a beautiful location with views as far as the eye can see this cottage really ticked the box for us. The local wildlife was very much abundant with deer and foxes in the nearby fields and countless birds and butterflies gracing the garden during the day.

The cottage itself was very spacious meaning the four of us (two adults and two teenagers) had plenty of room to relax, either on the large upper patio area or down by the pool. The boys really enjoyed the pool and the warm water proved an ideal cooling factor as the pool area proved to be quite the sun trap to gain that all important tan.

In the evening the boys and I relaxed with a game of pool and thanks to the sky TV we were able to enjoy the Euro's football with English commentary. The boys also made use of the WIFI to stay in contact with their friends at home.

Nearby Riberac gave us everything we needed from the Le Clerc hyper market or Intermarche supermarket both with filling stations, local restaurants and cafés plus the Friday Market which fills the towns large square.

We really enjoyed canoeing both the Dordogne and the Dronne Rivers however of the two, would recommend the Dronne which is closer to the cottage and has weirs, which are great fun to navigate down. We found a good little rental place in Lisle called Toofyk Canoes which took us up stream to Bordellies for a 3 hour paddle back including going down four weirs in the process at 12 euros per person.

An couple of hours drive away is Domme a medieval town situated on a hilltop with stunning views over the Dordogne plus nearby La Roque Gageac with its houses built into the rock face situated on the edge of the Dordogne and well work a visit.

We would also recommend the nearby village of Brantome which is very picturesque with its numerous shops and restaurants and stand out Abbey which includes a cave structure at the rear.

We found the communication from the owner in the lead up plus the help whilst on site first class. The property was very clean upon arrival with freshly made beds and fresh towels including pool towels waiting for us along with some basic provisions like milk and tea bags. The welcome bottle of wine also disappeared very quickly.

We would not hesitate to recommend this cottage to our friends and family. First class in our opinion.

Amazing Property in a Beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

From the minute we walked into the property we were blown away. The photo's almost dont to the property justice, if you think it looks good on the pictures it's better than that. Large, comfortable and very high standard. weather was 30+ for most of the time. Caves at Villars are stunning and well worth a visit as are Aubeterre and Brantome. Bergerac airport only an hours drive away so convienient if you have guests coming as we did. The whole booking process with Christine was brilliant. Would thouroughly recommend this property and area. Fantastic family holiday. would love to go back.

Fantastic Property

  • 5 of 5

The property and location were amazing. The photos on the website did not do the place justice as the house and grounds are very large. The property was immaculate and everything was there that we needed.

The area was brilliant with plenty to do to keep the children busy and active, the pool was a plus. Also Christine was extremely helpful during the booking process, could not recommend this property enough.

Idyllic and stylish house with fabulous views.

  • 5 of 5

We had the most relaxing fortnight here. The house is sympathetically modernised to a high standard. It combines a characterful living room and bedrooms with an elegant and spacious kitchen/dining room. The bifold doors in the kitchen connect to a delightfully, spacious terrace with 10 km views across rolling hills. The terrace also provides bbq and dining table. Steps from the terrace and sloping lawn take you down to a lovely swimming pool with space to bask in this sheltered sun trap. Trees provide a screen from neighbours so you get a real sense of seclusion. We can't recommend this house too highly. We had a wonderful time.
