About the property

Centrally located at the point where the provinces of Pisa, Siena and Florence meet, you can find the Tenuta di Ghizzano, which stretches for about 360 hectares among the gentle Pisan hills.

Our villa and farmhouses, built at the end of the 19th century, have been restored maintaining the original structure, but they are all fully equipped with modern comforts such as, satelite TV. and Wi-Fi Internet.

They are Situated in the middle of the countryside, among wheat fields, olive trees, vineyards, buzzards, pheasants, bee-eaters and roe-deers. Even if every farmhouse has it's own unique style, each of them have a swimming pool, a barbecue and a large garden.

Ghizzano, the little medieval village, reachable on foot from all of our farmhouses, has everything you may need: a bakery, a grocery store, a local club and an Italian clothes shop.

Within a ten minute drive you can find Peccioli, where there are some excellent restaurants, reviewed on TripAdvisor, banks, supermarkets, a chemist and butchers. You are only 30 minutes by car to reach Volterra and San Gimignano, while it takes about an hour to reach the most well-known cultural cities such as Lucca, Siena, Florence and Pisa. As a local would say, you are within 'shooting distance' of every main historical attraction!

Wine and extra-virgin olive oil have always been produced here, since 1370, which you are invited to taste in our ancient historical cellar or in our beautiful Italian Style Garden.

Our farming method is completely organic; that’s why you can still find rich and diversified local vegetation and animals that make the environment even more perfect.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Our purpose is to bring you closer to the wonders of nature and to our great variety of animals, such as deer and roe deer.

The project 'Animal Watching' was created with this purpose.

You will be guided through the woods In the quiet of the sunset and dawn. with binoculars we will observe the open space where deer and roe deer come out of the woods in search for food.

During the breeding season - July and August - females make a high whistle to attract males and males roar and flash their white rump. However males may also roar or make low grunting noises when alarmed. During the rut, bucks will spread out and females move between them. At this time of year one can see fallow deer ungrouped compared to the rest of the year when they try to stay together.

In early fall roe deer males mate and they chase the females.

You can see the roe deer primarily at dusk, they live in the woods and they may venture into grasslands and sparse forests. In June females usually give birth to two spotted fawns of opposite sexes.

It's up to you what time of the year you choose to meet them.

At the end of this full immersion into the green, experts will be happy to answer your questions.

We are willing to take you on a guided trip around the natural habitat and the fields that tells us about the peasants culture and the history of the little village. During thistrip, there will be an optional stop to taste the specialities cultivated on our farm and the surrounding area.

We are willing to make you taste the exceptional wines that we produce and that we export all over the world. They have been highly rated from all the major wine magazines such as Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate and Gambero Rosso.

The other traditional product of the family is the extravirgin organic olive oil, that you can taste with our wine.

The olive pressing is a cold and continuous cycle pressing within 24 hours from harvest ; we obtain a really fresh and flavoured oil.

There is a nice and comfortable room dedicated exclusively to relaxing massage. It's usually recommended to enjoy a pleasant, relaxing and regenerating hour and also as a relief from various functional unbalances.

The agriturism has 2 VILLA , 2 FARMHOUSES AND 4 APARTMENTS , all located in the middle of the hills, 5 or 10 minutes walkIing from the Ghizzano Village, through olive trees. Initially, its belonged to the farmer, and thus the name “The Colonial House”. It is usual for such a house to be located at one side or in the centre of a field called “podere”. The “Podere” was a piece of land given by the owner to the peasant : the crop was divided among them in equal parts. This system was very common in the late Middle Ages and was called “Mezzadria”.

the houses were built on one side of the of land (podere). This allowed people to get to the main road easier and allowed easy access of the crop wagons to get to the market.

It was our grand grandfather who, by the middle of the 19th century, built these houses and named the places after the patron saint of the crops. Thus came to life “Casa poderale Il Monte & Santa Giulia”. Casa Poderale' San Prospero' .The Gamekeeper''s house : today called Casa Guardia . VILLA GORGO who was the huning house of my grandfather, who has the noble title of 'COUNT' ,today called Villa gorgo. 4 beutifull houses eachone with his own swimmingpool and his own garden.

In order to protect and highlight the beauty of the landscape where these houses are, we did our best to preserve the original features of the structure. The beautiful landscape that you can see from the windows is still rich of wildlife that you can appreciate having long walks along the paths crossing the whole area. Biking, riding & bird watching are the other exciting sports that you may practice in this 'piece of Eden'.

The estate currently extends over approximately 865 acres with 45 acres of vineyards, 50 acres of olive groves, 370 acres of cereals, 370 acres of wood and poplars groves. The woods are still rich of wildlife: hawks, buzzards, bee eaters, pheasants, hares and roes the t you can appreciate having long walks along the paths crossing the whole area.

Amazing spot

We had a lovely three day stay in early April. The location is amazing: completely quiet and peaceful, with a beautiful short walk through the olive groves and vineyard to the village.

What a treat!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week’s stay at Santa Giula in April 2011 and loved it. We were thrilled when we turned up the cypress lined lane and realized where we’d be vacationing. The hamlet of Ghizzano and the farm are perched at the top of hill with fantastic views of surrounding hills, villages, etc. that extend to Volterra. Santa Giula is a beautiful and unique vacation rental. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. With various antiques and paintings, you feel as though as you’re staying in someone’s home. The building, which has two vacation apartments, is situated in a very private setting surrounded by olive groves. You can walk to town via a footpath through the groves filled roaming pheasants. That this farm remains in the hands of the same family for over 600 years is unique. We are still enjoying Tenuta di Ghizzano’s wine and olive oil – both superb. The property is very close to popular destinations including Pisa, Volterra, and San Gimignano. If you visit Pisa and need a respite, duck into the University of Pisa’s botanical gardens, which is a shady, quiet oasis in the city (its entrance is a very a couple blocks from the leaning tower). We enjoyed the smaller nearby villages, such as Lari, which has an interesting castle in the center of town. Thank you to Francesca and her family for sharing their beautiful property. And thank you to their very friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend. We hope to return soon. Karen, Brian & family

Glorious holiday on a centrally located Tuscany es

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the SANTA GIULIA unit for 8 nights. We were a little apprehensive as it was our first trip to Tuscany and the first internet holiday we had booked.

The property lived up to or exceeded our expectation on all counts. The unit was a good size and accommodation was comfortable for the 3 adult couples. There were 3 doule bedrooms one with an ensuite and the other 2 shared a bathroom. The kitchen dining area was just a nice size and a spacious lounge was great to relax in.

A games room on the ground floor had a table tennis table and this are was shared by both units.

The area surrounding the house had a lovely swimming pool shared between two units and each unit had its own barbecue area.

The owners went out of their way to make us feel at home and provided us with lots of information about their own magnificent estate and also where to eat and shop and see the sights in the surrounding villages.

We are definitely intending to return to Tuscany and will plan to take friends with us so they to can enjoy the hospitality provided by Francesca and her family.

Some of the highlights were: Volterra and the tug of war pageant. Lajatico and the Theatre of Silence. Capannoli and the Piaggio museum. Lucca and the wine tasting thanks to Francescas sister Genevra. San Gimignano with its incredible buildings and shops. Pisa and the leaning tower. The list goes on.

La Greppia retaurant in Peccioli was one of Francescas recommendations and it wasn't cheap but the meals were excellent and the wine cellar was the most impressive I have ever seen. It was so good we went back for a second night and weren't dissappointed.

The Tenuta de Ghizzano estate where SANTA GIULIA is situated is an extensive wine and olive growing farm where guests are free to wander at will. The estate wine cellar and olive crushing buildings are a relic of how things were done in earlier times and the family went out of their way to share the history with us.

During the booking process Francesca went out of her way to make the total experience a pleasure not only sorting out dates to suit us but assisting with on going travel plans well outside the immediate requirements of the actual booking. All arrangements that were agreed to by email were all adhered to without the slightest problem.

On behalf of our group I thank Francesca and her family for making our holiday a wonderful experience and look forward to being able to repeat the visit at some future time.

What a vacation in Santa Giulia !!!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

If you want peace and quiet, this is the place to be!!!!

We really enjoyed the beautiful old house with antiques and lovely decoration and everything is present to make life easy. The eating place outside is just marvellous, even when it's reaining you can sit outside and enjoy the magnificent view on the Tuscan hills.

The swimming pool is absolutely gorgeous, big, comfortable for children, everything you want !!!

Really in the center of Tuscany, you easily can go to Lucca, Pisa, Volterra or San Gimignano, even just to eat an icecream (30-45 min).

Just enjoy also the little villages in the neighbourhood were life is going very slowly and people are very gentle.

And don't forget the wines, the Tenuta di Ghizzano wines are top wines but affordable, go and visit the winery !!!! Also the low priced wines are really good.

In addition the owner family is very gentle and helpful, thanks Francesca for the best family vacation we had so far !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
