Overview

About the property

The first building recorded here was by the Normans in 1066, but there are earlier historical references going back to King Edgar in 966.

The cottage has been recently decorated to a high level. The furniture is a mix of modern, retro and antique creating an interior that is both elegant and relaxed in calming shades of grey. Guests have plenty of garden and parkland to roam with access to the parterre with a pond full of ornamental fish, meadow, fields and tennis court. This is one of the sunniest corners of Britain near the sea and South Downs. We have recently landscaped the outside area in front of the cottage planting a yew hedge, simple borders of lavender and a a couple of olive trees to give a crisp and simple Mediterranean feel.

About Gail Gower

I grew up in the Scottish Highlands where I developed a huge love of nature, wildlife and lots of sport. At school, a passion for the arts was nurtured and went on to study History of Art at university. My first job was as a trainee antique specialist in Oriental Art.

Gail Gower purchased this bungalow in 2003

Why Gail Gower chose Chichester

My family and I used to live in London. Every weekend we would head down here to the south coast where we enjoyed kite-surfing, windsurfing, mountain-biking and exploring the different landscape and seascapes to be found in this very special area.

What makes this bungalow unique

My family and I fell in love with the Old Manor House and it's beautiful garden and parkland. There has been a house recorded here since 1066 and the present Manor house is Carolean, built in 1677. It's a very special place which we very much enjoy sharing with our guests.

Fabulous comfy, spacey, welcoming cottage.

  • 5 of 5

A really nice place to stay, conveniently situated. Spacious and well equipped with a nice comfy bed! Excellent friendly booking communication from Gail. Gardens and surroundings would look even better in the summer sunshine. Wouldn't hesitate to re-book.

Perfect, peaceful spot for Chichester

  • 5 of 5

A lovely, individual cottage with very spacious rooms and in a quiet location. It was ideal for our party of two couples.

There is direct access to footpaths so you can walk to the local pub, or Chichester and the marina if you don't want to use the car.

Car: recommended

The Old Manor House Cottage has an excellent location which is both very rural and private, but close to the sea, the South Downs and the Roman city of Chichester, not to mention many areas of historical interest and outstanding beauty . The cottage sits in a large, well manicured garden and parkland. Positioned on the north bank of the Chichester Canal providing access, on foot or bike, into the heart of Chichester in one direction and Chichester Marina and estuary in the other where you will find the delightful Boat House cafe, excellent for a hearty breakfast or a picturesque cup of coffee or afternoon tea, with fabulous views over the harbour.

There is a charming pub, the Blacksmiths Arms, a mere 5-minute (0.4-miles) walk away where you can eat inside or out in the stylish outdoor chill area.

We're close to the famous Blue Ribbon beaches of West Wittering and East Head a 15-minute drive away (6.48-miles) and the beautiful South Downs where you'll find the famous Kingley Vale with the oldest yew trees in Europe some estimated at 2,000-yrs-old. If you feel energetic, you can climb to the top of Kingley Vale where you'll encounter fabulous views across endless English countryside and far out across the distant waters of the english Channel.

Although the immediate setting of the cottage is rural and peaceful, it is also very close to Chichester City centre and all the amenities there: the famous Festival Theatre, Novium Museum, Pallant House Art Gallery, Roman remains and wall, Norman Cathedral with free-standing Medieval tower, cinema, restaurants and quaint shopping area in the Georgian city centre.

The nearest airports are Gatwick, Southampton, Heathrow and Bournemouth. The nearest train stations are Chichester and Havant, the former 5-minutes away and the latter 10-minutes.

There are endless local activities, here I will list a few: moutain-biking, road-biking, wake-boarding, sailing, waterskiing, paddle-boarding, windsurfing, kite-surfing, golf, horse-riding and walking. Some great local sites we've already mentioned, but here are a few more: Fishbourne Roman Palace (the most important Roman Palace North of the Alps); Arundel Castle; Nelson's ship, the Victory, in Portsmouth; the beautiful gardens and arboretum of West Dean; and Bronze Age remains in the South Downs National Park.

If at all possible, do bring your bikes. You can access the Centurion Way, the heart of Chichester, Chichester Marina and estuary, on foot or bike, without having to get into your car.
