Papillon is an exceptional Gîte with a very well equipped fitted kitchen including cooker, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave. Beautiful large vaulted and beamed sitting room with picture windows overlooking the private garden. There are two twin bedrooms and one double bedroom. Bathroom with shower. Separate WC. Private garden with terrace, garden furniture and BBQ. The kitchen/diner has a wood burning stove. Bed linen and a generous welcome pack are provided. Free Internet access is available as is UK & French TV, subject to availability.

About Pam & Charlie Nott

When choosing our own holidays, we always knew we would go to France, the decision was which region? When we decided to make a lifestyle change France was the only place for us. We moved to La Roche Chabrelle in 2002 with our family and have run our 4 gîtes here ever since. Our aim has been to provide relaxing holidays for both families and couples in a beautiful quiet location. With simply furnished but well equipped gîtes, we take pride in seeing our guests unwind while staying with us.

Why Pam & Charlie Nott chose Saint-Just

The Perigord Vert region is an area of gently rolling hills separated by winding river valleys, between the woods there are fields of sunflowers and wheat and walnut trees for the walnut oil milled locally. It is very rural and unspoilt with lots of space and few people. Being so undeveloped means this is a region full of wildlife and the local deer are a frequent sight in the early morning or at dusk.

La Roche Chabrelle is situated in a small hamlet of just 4 houses and being on top of a hill has beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. There are plenty of walks and cycle rides on our doorstep, canoeing on the nearby river Dronne and many cafes bars and restaurants just a short drive away. Brantôme, our nearest town is known as the Venice of the Dordogne and has an excellent market.

What makes this farmhouse unique

This is a paradise for children who love having the freedom of 5 acres to play in. We have swings, a badminton net, a small football pitch and a cricket rebound net and a games cave with table tennis and table football. We also have a troglodyte cave on site which was inhabited during medieval times. Whatever the season there are plenty of wildflowers, birds and other wildlife to see and we try to encourage them with suitable habitats such as leaving some areas of grass uncut. The children are always fascinated by the insects and lizards. At nights the stars are a wonderful sight with no light pollution and spotting the shooting stars is a popular evening pastime.

Thank you for a lovely relaxing holiday. Fabulous location and all 'mod cons' too! We have visited many places in the local area and even swum in the pool. The gîte was lovely, but rather cold in the evening. Would certainly recommend coming here. (Note from Owners - Papillon has full central heating and a wood burner but the guests decided not to use it)

This place was perfect for us. The gite was just as described in fact better in real life , everything was clean and well maintained this was the first time of bringing our dog to france the garden was secure and safe ,we could relax knowing she would be safe .The weather was not great so we didn't use the pool but it looked very inviting . The Wi-Fi was fast and the gite was very well equipped, loved every moment .There is plenty of sites to see ,the folder in the gite has lots of information on places to eat and visit . Pam and Charlie were great hosts thank you.Over 12 years of visiting France this was one of the best places we have stayed ,We will be back. look forward to seeing you next year thank you again, Nick and June

PS would recommend to friends and family as long as they don't book when we want it

Lovely. The Gite & location for quiet company , happy kids and enough to explore

La Roche Chabrelle: Our Gite, Papillon was rustic but reasonably enough equipped. With basic beds, a comfy spacious living room (where you can watch UK TV - if you must !!) , and practical old rural kitchen. Its thick Walls offering a cool arbour in the height of summer (I'm sure),. It has a private garden with a terrace for evening BBQ's or quietly sunning yourself (alongside the Little Lizards who entertain and keep the insert life under control for you !) The site is in quiet location but with some great on-site facilities for such a small holiday site. The Owners and 3 other larger Gites sharing a heated pool and lovely rural views over the spectacular Droone Valley (a Tributary of the Dordogne, which weaves gently though a broad valley of Sweetcorn and Sunflowers edged by Tree lined spectacular Limestone Cliffs). On-site for kids there is an underground (all weather) games 'cave' to hang out in - safe, but away from Mum and Dad! , and two flat fields for whatever games they choose to invent . For the whole family; even in high season the excellent pool will never be crowded by the max (I'm told 26) Guests, and the location gives easily driveable access to many towns and villages (and their local markets), Chateaux's, Abbey's, river valley activity sites and some lovely restaurants.

We were there at the end of summer (Mid September) , when Europe is back to school, and the weather getting less warm and predictable, making the whole area a little too quiet for us , but that was our problem .

If you want a typical Gite in a Southern France, a summer idyll offering quiet, (but with the option for some holiday company) , a rural playground for kids and enough to gently explore off-site. This one is for you.

We felt immediately at home in 'Papillon'

This was the ideal place to keep 2 pre-teen boys busy while the parents enjoyed the tranquility. There are hidden-away cliffs in the woods to explore and for picnics (take the time to read about this in the information book!), swimming and canoeing along the Drone, or make use of the table tennis, badminton and room to kick a football about. This is not an area packed with tourists, and we had a wonderful and leisurely time exploring. Le Cabanon in Creyssac is perfect for a relaxed family pizza - book to make sure you get a table by the water- and of course the heated pool is the jewel in the crown. Hats off to owners Pam and Charlie for being friendly, ever helpful and still discrete. We didn't want to leave...

Great Gite

Really enjoyed our family stay in the gite. It is well equiped with a nice private garden at the back. Even during a heatwave it doesn't get too hot. The pool is fantastic and great for relaxation on a hot day. The owners are very helpful, around to assist but not intrusive. The area itself is great, not too busy with beautiful towns such as Brantome and Bourdeilles nearby as well as easy access to outdoor activities such as canoeing. Good wi-fi access in most of the gite.

Home from home

Absolutely fantastic Gite. Everything you need and more. Well stocked kitchen and comfortable rooms with lovely Lounge room and a private secure garden. Was visiting with family and pet dog so garden was perfect. Could fully relax. Wonderful pool and other games available on site. Plenty of walks locally and close to many beautiful French villages & towns all only a short drive away. Really relaxing and welcoming. Pam & Charlie where perfect hosts so grateful for the opportunity to stay at their property. Photos on website do not start to do Gite justice its idyllic, butterflies and flowers in garden at Papillon where added bonus. Hopefully make a return journey in future could have easily stayed longer.

Superb as a winter let

I recently stayed in Papillon over the autumn/winter period - a 7month stay. The weather stayed great until mid December and started to warm up again at the end of February. Even though it was winter Dec-Feb, there is still plenty to do in the area and the surroundings are great for walks if you have dogs like I do. Staying at La Roche Chabrelle was perfect for me because I didn't need to bring everything with me as Pam & Charlie provided in Papillon whatever it was that was needed. I was one person (plus two dogs) in the gite but it would comfortably sleep 6. The water is always running hot and the wifi internet connection is great for those who need it. Pam and Charlie will make sure guests have what they need. They'll also help out with anything you need to know, especially if you're needing help 'en français'.

Highly recommend this as great accommodation during the autumn and winter months, which is in fact an ideal time to enjoy the beauty of the Dordogne without having to battle with the tourists for parks or with cyclists for the road, as is often the case in summer/high season.

South of the Cricket Line

Driving south from Limoges in Limousin, the landscape and architecture suddenly begin to take on a more southerly look. Instead of grey slate, the roofs become terracotta tiles with quaint sloping angles. Instead of grey granite, the walls become honey coloured limestone or rusty red sandstone. Cooler, greyer northern France is left behind and you enter Aquitaine and Dordogne, where in summer the crickets sing from dawn till dusk, followed by the nightingales. You have crossed the invisible line into southern France!

You will not want to travel much further if you have driven from a channel port that day. So what have we here in northern Dordogne bordering on Corrèze and Haute-Vienne? This is the borderland between France and Aquitaine, scene of so many battles during the hundred years’ war, a land of stunning fortress chateaux, built mostly to keep out the English - or the French, depending on which side of the border they happened to be. Some towns were repeatedly sacked, pillaged and burnt by the opposing armies. One castle, Excideuil, withstood two sieges by the English king, but the town around it was burnt to a cinder. In Excideuil also was born the first troubadour, Bertrand de Born. Perhaps the whole idea of chivalry came from this little area in Périgord. Enough of history – what about the weather?

Long hot summers last from May until September. Just enough rain keeps the landscape deliciously fresh and green. It is, after all, called the Périgord Vert, and even when there is a dry summer it does not turn the landscape brown or glaring white (as it can so often be only a short way south). Winters here are delightful, with frosty dry weather, sunny days and very little snow. When it rains it is usually very wet, but mild. Spring and autumn are distinct seasons, reliably unreliable. The colourful local farmers’ markets keep pace with the seasons so you know where you are in the year. Temperatures are a noticeable degree or two higher than in Limousin, but only rarely reach the dizzy heights so frequent in the Midi and Mediterranean regions.

This is the undiscovered corner of Aquitaine, quiet, unspoilt and rural. Fewer Britons have bought here than have been descending on the fashionable river Dordogne area. Being an hour away from the tourist hot spots means uncluttered roads throughout the summer and easy access at all times of the year.

One huge advantage is the easy access to Limoges, Bordeaux, Brive and Bergerac airports flying direct to many UK cities. The new A89 motorway provides good links to Bordeaux and the coast to the west, and to the ski slopes of the Massif Central to the east. The A20 links the area to Paris and the north, and to Toulouse and the far south.

This is what makes La Roche Chabrelle a superb destination for your holiday whether you are a family or just a couple.
