About Dimitris

Biologist, Quality consultant, 1966 year of berth, married with Evaggelia (Biologist). We have a daughter Nena 1995 (Biologist) and a son George 1999 (hope not Biologist).

Dimitris purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Dimitris chose Symi

In the shadow of the old plane tree, in the amphitheatrical square “Avgerinos”, were laid the ruins of the stone building, a pile of garbage and stones, which represented the "shame" of this graphic and amphitheatrical square. A folksy house, whose time travel began in the early or in the mid of 19th century, sensed the breath, the crying and the delight of the locals, the travelers and the warriors of life, and followed the fate of abandonment, that wars and poverty imposed.

And now comes the right decision to revive and accept travelers, who come to live days of tranquility and authenticity, and savor the quality of Greece. In this authentic habitat, they will see, will live and find out, that “Tourism” does not mean subordination, does not mean whatever apartment, that holiday in Greek islands is neither just “ROOMS TO LET”, nor the impersonal few or five stars room. This “Tourism”, constitutes the reflection of this island’s history.

And that is the story that this house is going to recount, the new decade of the 21st century.

What makes this cottage unique

Villa Platanos, is a clear proof of virtuosity, of craftsmanship and elegance of Symians’ craftsmen, who continue to work and produce such carvings.

For the restoration of the house, where used the existing stones of ruins, while, the old masonry was maintained where possible. The traditional materials such as stone, wood, tiles and erratic Symian slates, dominate. However, for reasons mainly static, for fire protection, thermal insulation and hygiene, modern materials were used, such as unreinforced and reinforced concrete, insulation materials, ceramic tiles etc. This modern materials, where used so as not to weaken the sense that this building, existed even since the pre-past century.

The layout of the building follows, to a very great extent, the old organization of spaces. Although, it modifies, in the least burdensome way, the sizes and the uses of spaces, in order to correspond, as much as possible, to the requirements of the 21st century.

The underground tank cleaned of litter and repaired, so as to keep storing the rainwater. Although this water is not sufficient for the current needs of a home, supplements with water the City network, which now reaches, on a daily basis, the houses of the village.

The basement, which was once a storage area beneath the plaster of the ground floor, after the dredging, got a sufficient height to form the bath of the ground level.

On the ground floor, the traditional "Tsimia" was maintained, viz the fireplace with the niches and the cupboards on either side, which indicate its use as a kitchen. This room, because of its size, constitutes a place where the family could spend most of the time. It can also be used as a sleeping area for large families, as the wooden sofas, generously offer another storage room.

A large rock in the middle of the sea that is inhabited by Greek sponge divers was transformed, more precisely recreated by its residents, who in blending tradition and elegance with the wild landscape, gave the place a unique character of dazzling beauty. The rugged cliff of yesteryear is today a neoclassical state.

The mansions with single or double roofs, with the bi-colored facades in warm colors adorn the 58 square kilometer rock and vying for the spotlight with the irresistible turquoise sea.

The Lady of the Aegean will amaze you with her beauty from the time the ship enters the harbor. And because beauty is captured only in photos that is what you will be constantly trying to do every minute of your stay on the island.

The entire residential complex of Symi has been designated as a "traditional settlement" and indeed it is the largest in the country. On the island there are five settlements, the Symi, Emborios, Pedi, Marathounta, and Panormiti.

The village of Symi has been divided by the locals in two smaller ones. Yialos which is the area around the sheltered harbor up to the nearby hills and the Horio continuing on up higher and around the old castle or else known as Ano Symi.

The Symiams deal mainly with tourism and less with fishing, agriculture and rearing of animals.

Of particular interest is the older art of woodcarving that has been preserved in many mansions and hotels in Yialos.

If you are interested, you will need to look long and hard to discover the few remaining artisans of wood carving and shipbuilding, which were once dominant trades and were part of the rich tradition of Symi.

To see how to build boats in the traditional way, you must visit the two remaining shipyards while to find traditional furniture, made as only Symians knew how, you will need to discover the last two small industries that are solely dedicated to the construction them.

What you also need to know about Symi is that they are known for their longevity. ! In 1497 a famous writer who visited the island, in his writings noted that he met Symians between 120 and 140 years. Recently, in 1999, a survey conducted by French scientists brought to light the phenomenon of the longevity of Symians that reaches up to 120 years.

Scientists attribute the phenomenon of longevity, to the natural way of life that the food mostly comes from the sea and the daily exercise of the residents up and down the countless stairs in their amphitheater styled village. Greek Mythology though gives a different explanation for the phenomenon of longevity of the Symian

Finally Symi has quality accommodations, entertainment, food and also discreet isolation, which makes it particularly endearing to personalities from the international world of show business and beyond. And as for the fact that some people have described Symi as the "Mykonos of the Southern Aegean" they probably rushed to this conclusion, as there is no way you will see the celebrities here, but you will be informed of their presence on the island.
