Luxury Bed and Breakfast in the heart of Falkland

The cottage can accommodate up to 4 people at a time. With its own entrance and gate you can come and go as you please. A continental breakfast will be delivered to you at a time you request.

The 17th century cottage overlooks the orchards of Falkland Palace. A tumble-down ruin for many years, it has undergone a complete rebuild and is transformed into elegant B&B accommodation. Many original features of the old cottage are retained on the outside, whilst on the inside, guests can relax in a modern, warm and welcoming retreat with sitting room, two twin bedrooms and bathroom.

An amazing place, an amazing town, and an amazing host!

  • 5 of 5

The village of Falkland is a beautiful place to visit with so much to see and do all around. It is a short drive to St. Andrews and all the little villages around the coast. Not far from Stirling, and if you are an Outlander fan it is the best place to be! The “Ruin”, is a beautiful modern but cozy home away from home. The décor and all the beautiful paintings make it a warm and comfortable place to stay. However, the best of all is the wonderful host who is always there when you need him. John delivers the most delicious breakfast to you each morning. He has great stories to tell, wonderful sense of humor and if you need help planning your day, John is most helpful with ideas and suggestions. I certainly recommend “The Ruin”, and we will definitely be back.

Owner's Response: Hi there, it was an absolute pleasure having you stay. Hope the rest of your trip was fun and the Jaguar wasn't too much of a handful. Whenever you are next across the pond let me know. All the best to you both. J x

Lovely, well kept little place.

  • 5 of 5

The Ruin was beautiful, the owner John could not have been more welcoming, he had provided all the little touches that make a place feel like home.

The breakfasts were delicious, in particular the homemade granola.

I will absolutely be back.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your feedback. The wee touches and bed choice are my wife's influence. She travels a lot for work and is usually disappointed with the standard of some hotels, she therefore wanted The Ruin to be a little haven. I'll let her know her input's not gone unnoticed. The granola's all me. Happy to have you back anytime. J

Beautiful renovated cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the 'ruin' by Falkland Palace. It may have been a ruin at one time, but it is now a beautifully renovated cottage. John was very accomodating and helped us with all that we needed to make our stay comfortable and memorable.

Charming stay in Falkland village

  • 5 of 5

This property is situated in a little village surrounded by beautiful countryside . It is really lovely, very modern and clean and has everything you need for a comfortable stay, plus those little extras such as little chocolates and wine in the fridge , which make you feel very special guests .The owners , John and Peta are always at hand to answer any queries regarding local information , restaurants, places of interest etc. John makes the most amazing breakfast which he delivers to the door each morning at the agreed time . We would certainly recommend this property for a relaxing base to explore Fife.

Falkland is easy to find. If you're coming from Edinburgh follow signs for the M90 north, go over our nice new bridge and keep going north. Ordinarily you'd come off at junction 8 , following signs for Strathmiglo and Falkland.

Once you reach Falkland and driving up the High Street you'll see the Palace on the right. We’re on the right before the church.

Falkland itself is about 40-50 minutes from Edinburgh by car. Alternatively there's a local station in Markinch about 10 minutes away that has a regular service (45 min) to the city centre. The bonus here is that parking is free at the station, rather than crippling in Edinburgh!

History wise we're next door to Falkland Palace, the Bannock Burn visitor centre is about 40 min away and the Wallace Monument is there too. Scoune Palace is about 30 min away this is where the Scottish kings were crowned. Loch Leven about 20 min away - after a childhood at Falkland palace Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned on an island there, she didn't have the luxury of the scenic boat trip. St Andrews is about 30 min away - golf, university, beach. If you look at National Trust website it'll list other National Trust properties you can visit. There are also several villages (Falkland, Dysart and Culross) on your doorstep that have featured in the series Outlander. Essentially we're very central.

There are fabulous woodland walks in Falkland Estate with tunnels and bridges, you can even walk behind a waterfall.
