Overview

About the property

Welcome to our beautiful 18th Century Millers Cottage in a quiet country lane in the village of Antrain. Walk around the corner to collect your croissants and bread in the morning, visit the small bistrot or bar without having to drive home, or walk to the small supermarket or market for your groceries. All very handy yet we're in a peaceful setting with the only noise coming from the near church bells (near but daytime only) and the wood pigeons.

Antrain is a brilliant location, we're on the borders of Normandy and Brittany. Ferries, beautiful beaches and medieval towns are all within 45 minutes easy reach. Le Mont St Michel is 25mins away and St Malo and Dinard are 45mins. The historic town of Fougeres is 20mins and 15mins away is the town of Pontorson with many restaurants. The bay of Mont St Michel is renowned for fine seafood, you can visit sophisticated restaurants in Cancale or equally stop at the roadside shacks for a casual moules mariniere.

On the edge of the village is the Chateau de Bonnefontain with gardens open to the public in the summer and 2km out of the village is the Forest of Villecartier, with its beautiful walks around the lake, treetop adventure courses, boating and pony rides.

There are many family attractions all within one hours easy drive, zoos, alligator bay, theme parks, aquariums as well as numerous beautiful beaches.

Our house has a cute country cottage feel, with lots of character and a wow master bedroom. There's a woodburner for those slightly colder evenings as well as heating throughout. The garden is beautiful and with grapevines, cherry, peach, plum and pear trees you will bound to find a fresh, tasty treat. There is absolutely everything to make your holiday as comfortable as possible from films, English and French TV to a book library and boardgames. In the garden there is a large dining table to accomodate 6 people as well as a few sun loungers and picnic benches, ideal for a BBQ.

We want you to have a wonderful time at Millers Cottage, as we do, so we have tried to make our cottage as comfortable as possible, we look forward to welcoming you.

About The Owner

Myself, my husband and my son have been travelling around France for years in our motorhome and every trip had us dreaming of onw day owning our own cottage in France.

In 2015 we fell in love with this cottage and decided to take the plunge. Since then we've been busy renovating it with a paintbrush in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other!

We have had some fabulous times here whether it's been relaxing in the garden or visiting the various attractions in easy reach.

The Owner purchased this house in 2015

Why The Owner chose Antrain

When we were looking for a property we could never decide on Brittany or Normandy as we loved them both so this property is ideal for us as it's in Brittany but just over the border to Normandy so we get the best of both worlds.

There's masses to do in easy reach from zoos, to beaches, and medieval towns, we also wanted to be close to the ferries so we could go for a few days without having a big drag of a journey

Antrain-tastic

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was relatively narrow-fronted and added to the surprise on walking through the door. It was deep and restored/decorated to a very high standard and had everything needed for a relaxing yet self-catering holiday. Weather mixed but that's life....what you do with the weather is the trick. We spent time unwinding in the large garden.....and time visiting the local market in Pontorson....the market in Antrain is very tiny! Fougeres is well worth a visit but, to best effect NOT on Mondays......Mont St Michel too, but arrive early.....by 10am latest to avoid some of the hordes....at least at arrival.....and do take packed lunches (much more economic). We visited Alligator Bay too......for us probably the best reptile house ever visited. We loved Antrain....and Jay's lovely cottage.

Owner's Response: What a lovely review, thank you. We're actually at the cottage now and it's great to know people love it as much as we do! I agree with you about Alligator Bay, it's great, particularly if you catch the feeding time! We look forward to welcoming you to Millers Cottage again some day.

Very Successful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Millers Cottage with my elderly mother, and for part of the week my daughter and her boyfriend also joined us. My mother had the downstairs bedroom and we had the enormous upstairs bedroom with the huge beam across it. Mum did manage the stairs, they are very steep, but I'm glad she didn't have to get up them every day. The cottage is very lovely, quirky, very nicely decorated and well equipped. We cooked in the cottage most evenings and found all the utensils we needed. We weren't able to make much use of the garden as the weather was quite changeable, but we sat out when we could and it is very private and peaceful. We liked being in Antrain - we used the Carrefour and the boulangerie - and found everyone very friendly. Everyone says Bonjour. Not much English seems to be spoken locally, but I liked that as it forced me to speak French.

We visited Mont St Michel, which is very near, Dinan, which is really beautiful and not to be missed, and Bayeux, which was a longer drive, but very well worth the effort. We also liked Dol de Bretagne (very near) and St Malo. We certainly had not exhausted all the local sights and I hope one day we might be able to return.

This was a very successful holiday.

We had some small problems with the electricity: we were suddenly left without lights one evening and had to find the fuse box, and then didn't have hot water the following morning, but this was a minor hiccough, and we managed to sort it on our own. The weather was a bit chilly and we used the electric heater in Mum's bedroom and the log burner in the lounge. They were very efficient and heated the rooms quickly. There was not quite enough hot water for five showers (with my daughter also washing her hair!), but the water was hot and plentiful enough for the other days when there were only three or four of us showering. And you can override the system to get more hot water if you really need it. As other people have mentioned the arrangement of bathrooms is unusual - the upstairs one is en suite and the downstairs one can be accessed both from the bedroom and the living room - but it didn't cause us any problems.

Jay sent very comprehensible directions and instructions. And got in touch before we left home to tell us that the washing machine was broken and would probably not be fixed before our visit. I doubt we would have wanted to use it anyway. but it was obviously helpful to know in advance.

This was a lovely place to stay.

Perfect Cottage In Rural France!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here for a week in April and we all loved it. The house itself is perfectly located to access all the great sights of Lower Normandy and Northern Brittany.

Millers Cottage has all the comforts you would expect and is fully kitted out with everything you would need. The front room is a haven for peaceful evenings drinking red wine in front of the log burner after a busy day and the kids have gone to bed. The master bedroom has the Wow! factor, it's huge and is beautifully decorated and the exposed beams look fantastic. We spent hours in the garden as we were very lucky with the weather and there is lots of space for the children to run about, we loved eating lunch outside waiting for the church bells to chime.

Antrain has all that you need...A boulangerie for breakfast, small supermarket, a small market on Tuesdays and a great little pizza van that comes every Friday.

The best local day trips for us were the Tree Top Trail, Le Mont St Michel, The Market in Pontorson, Dinard, Cherrueix, St Malo & Alligator Bay, but we fell in love with Dinan...not for the faint hearted with lots of walking and hills but the views in the Port are stunning and there is a great park and mini golf for the kids.

Overall, we would definitely recommend staying at Millers Cottage, we had a fantastic stay and the owners have done a fantastic job renovating the property, it is clearly a loved home.

We will definitely be back next year!

Great Location as a hub for visiting Brittany & Normandy.

  • 4 of 5

When we chose Millars Cottage at Antrain we did it with the intent of visiting many Villages & Towns. We also wanted to be close to Mont St Michelle. In the three weeks that we were there we logged over 3000 Kms visiting at least 15 locations, many towns several times. pros

Comfortable Cottage, we had three days of 35 degree weather and returned to the cottage for the afternoons and the cool main floor. Good baked goods for breakfast close buy. Negatives, lack of eating establishments in Antrain

Charming home from home.

  • 5 of 5

Having left booking our holiday until pretty late in the year, I was delighted to find this house.

We were seven, including our four children and eldest child's boyfriend and this house accommodated us all comfortably. The huge loft bedroom was a big bonus with it's large L shaped sofa. We were able to split up and use two separate living areas. The entertainment centre upstairs only has a video player but we brought a laptop and some DVD's to watch whilst others were glued to the Olympics downstairs!

Pros: Pretty, nicely decorated, clean, well equipped. Great communication with owners. Gorgeous big garden with flowers, fruit trees, sun loungers, BBQ, large table and lots of chairs. Walking distance to supermarket, boulangeries. Pizza van was very good. Tree-top walk in forest (much nicer, and cheaper, than Go Ape!) is a must. It's only minutes away and has a lovely playground and lake side cafe.

Cons: Very minor. Beware the beam across bedroom in the night....ouch. Upstairs bathroom is en suite for large bedroom, Downstairs bathroom has Jack and Jill doors to bedroom and living room. Privacy was a bit of an issue. Kitchen/diner small. We just about squeezed around table but mostly ate in garden anyway. No dishwasher. Could be seen as a pro - made kids wash up! Village is very quiet. Again this is subjective but there was nowhere for grown up, non driving, kids to go on their own.

All in all we had a very nice week in this house. There is plenty to do within a moderate drive and I thoroughly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your lovely review, we feel you summed it up quite well and we're glad you enjoyed your week! We agree the kitchen is probably tight for 7 people but we normally only let it to 6 people. The locals have told us that there will be 2 more bars and a hotel opening in April so hopefully if you return your older children will have a little more to do in the village.
