About Le Gîte de la forge

I am English and Claude French. We have four children, a dog, cats and two ponies. We arrived in Saint Martin de Bavel in 2004 and have been renovating the forge du Perou ever since! The gite was let all year round and when the tenant left in january 2016, we decided to have a go at holiday letting.

We absolutely love this area, we have travelled widely and we are always pleased to get home. We want to share this undiscovered beautiful part of France that the French and Swiss neighbours have been keeping for themselves.

Le Gîte de la forge purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Le Gîte de la forge chose Ain

The forge is an old stone house dating back from 1802 in the heart of the village. Saint Martin de Bavel is a typical old fashioned agricultural village perfectly located to discover the area.

A cosy and comfortable gite in a pretty village.

  • 4 of 5

Sarah and Claude and family were very warm and welcoming, they are very discreet but there if you need them. The gite was very comfortable and the amazing showers deserve a special mention! This is a beautiful area of France. We visited Lyon, Annecy and Aix-les-bains. Also, by chance the memorial at Izieu, which was very moving. We highly recommend the restaurant Le Belvedere a la Chambotte. The food was amazing with views to match, it was definitely a highlight of our holiday.

A beautiful mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautifully restored two-story "gite." Sarah and Claude, who live just across a small garden, were gracious hosts with many suggestions for activities in the surrounding area. One day we took the nearby train to Lyon (1 hour away), a lovely city with lots to see; on another day we explored some small towns and dined at a spectacular restaurant in the mountains. It was also pleasant to spend time in the gite by the wood stove - a very comfortable and unique setting. Highly recommended!

One of our best family holidays.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family holiday in this very beautiful and rural part of France. Although it was October we (my husband and I and 2 young children) had an abudance of things to keep ourselves entertained for the week and actually felt that it was a perfect time to visit this area if you are looking for a true escape.

One of the many highlights of our week included a trip to the historical city of Lyon full of cultural treasures and unique shops especially in 'Le Vieux Lyon" where our children were mesmerized by the abundance of sweet and chocolate shops. A trip to Annecy (an hours drive from the gite ) was another highlight with it's cystal clear lake and mountain views which looked even more stunning in the Autumn light. A town full of character, ambience and regional eateries, it's a must see. On route to Annecy we stopped at the Restaurant, Le Belvedere a La Chambotte which serves tastey regional food while enjoying the stunning views over Le Lac du Bourget.

Our other escapades included an easy yet stunning cycle along Le ViaRhona from Chanaz to Belley, a drive to the top of Le Grand Colombier with spectacular views of the upper Rhone valley, a gentle trek through the forest to see Les Cascades de Clairefontaine de Virieux le Grand and a trip to the lovely thermal spa town of Aix-Les-Bains. When we weren't venturing around we relaxed and enjoyed the homely feel of the gite which is very comfortable and warm with the stove fire. Sarah, Claude and their lovely family were so welcoming and made our stay so special. We are very grateful for everything including all your recommendations of must sees, directions, organising bike hire and your fantastic culinary skills, (Sarah's Tartiflette is a must have). A very special thank you to Abby for the children's pony trek on Illico and Thomas and the girls for the Halloween treats!!

We highly recommend this gite and we will return ourselves one day!!

Hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

Le Gite is a beautiful cottage. As soon as I stepped in, I felt comfortable. The location benefits from the surrounding nature, lakes, mountains, water falls and night views with so many stars in the sky. I also loved "the bread machine " that was located at the corner of the village. I've never seen a vending machine which supplies freshly made breads!

Most of all, Claude and Sarah are wonderful hosts. I felt I had known them for a while.. on the first day I met them.

Agréable week-end

  • 5 of 5
