About the property

Spacious and well equipped two bedroom house with great views.

Charming traditional house, very comfortable and well equipped in a peaceful rural setting with easy access to all essential services. The property lies off a gravel road with a cypress tree lined driveway with ample parking. The gardens are extensive - 2.5 hectares of olive, carob, almond and fruit trees with your own veggie patch to enjoy!

Recently renovated and decorated the house has many delightful and quirky features and art work. The farm house kitchen has a large 8 seater dining table and is fully equipped with gas hob, electric oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine, toaster and kettle. The cosy snug/ study off the kitchen has a log burner and deep armchairs whilst the large sitting room has a wood burner, Internet TV with DVD and Video player and film library.. The spacious main double bed bedroom has good sized wardrobe and storage. The twin bed bedroom leads off the sitting room and also as a large wardrobe and storage. The bathroom has wc, bath, double basins whilst the shower room with wc and basin also houses the washing machine and tumble drier.

There are many seating and dining areas outside in the large gardens with a particularly stunning circular terrace with 360 degree views, overlooking a lower terrace with plunge pool.

This is a perfect setting for a wonderful holiday! Beaches, beach bars, restaurants and shops are a 15 minute drive away. Golf courses, bike hire, cinemas, shopping centres, water parks and other activities are close by. In addition we are surrounded by areas perfect for hiking, mountain biking and rambling.

We regret that this house is not suitable for children under the age of 12 years old.

About David and Bev Ashby

We retired to the Algarve in 2010 and were delighted to find our ideal property with two houses on a large plot of land in a rural setting. We had enjoyed many holidays over 25 years in Portugal and knew that when David hung up his legal boots and Bev graduated from her Art degree that we would move to sunnier climes. Bev is a sculptor, originally from South Africa, and there is a strong African feel about the place. We live all year on the property and enjoy pottering about in the garden and the studio, David on his old tractor with Donna, the chocolate labrador, trailing behind him.

Why David and Bev Ashby chose Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo

We chose this property for it's beautiful setting and knew that we would enjoy the mild climate, the long sunny days, the relaxed lifestyle and rural nature of the East Algarve. It took over 3 years to find the perfect spot. Close to beaches, golf courses, shopping centres and modern amenities but far enough away from busy roads and noise. Particularly we wanted a typical Portuguese property - not a bland holiday villa.

Our search led us to the Eastern Algarve, which is relatively unspoiled, has a larger resident population than the western holiday resorts. Restaurants are simpler and really quite affordable in this area, traffic is minimal and yet we are only 25 minutes from the airport. Spain is just 40 minutes away, Seville a two hour drive or we can be on the beach with the dog in 20 minutes. The mainline train from Faro gets you to Lisbon in 3 hours! Just a perfect location!

What makes this farmhouse unique

Casa Rosa is close enough to all amenities. Our little village boasts a bakery and cafe,a restaurant, a post office, a news agent, bank, pharmacy, several grocery stores, a market,hardware store, a petrol station, But more than the proximity to all the necessary amenities, this property offers a truly peaceful and happy atmosphere without a feeling of isolation. Accessed by a short unmade road, we are blessed with little passing traffic.

The Papa Figo bird, also known as the Golden Oriel, is common in late spring/early summer. The wild bulbs and flowers are prolific then too whilst in the heat of summer the garden offers a green oasis contrasting with the baked red soil, olives, almonds and carobs (alfarrobeira).

This is a perfect place for friends and families with older children to relax and enjoy themselves in a rural environment with fantastic views, a Portuguese idyll.

Maid service weekly, additional days on request (extra charge) Baby sitting available on request Welcome basket of essentials on arrival. Our lovely chocolate labrador Donna loves our guests, she is very friendly and may visit you from time to time. Please send her home if she is not welcome. This area has much to offer from bird watching, hiking and biking, too many beaches to mention plus a fantastic choice of restaurants, beach bars and bakeries. Tennis, golf, sailing and watersports are available within a 20 minute drive and there are also waterparks, zoo marine and quad biking within a 45 minute journey. The Spanish border is a 20 minute drive away, Seville 2 hours, Lisbon 3 hours, the rugged West Algarve about 1 1/2 hours drive.

Could not have wished for better.

Cottage very comfortable with every amenity. Beautiful and peaceful location and ideal for accessing many beaches and general touring about. Owners so friendly and helpful.

Many restaurants locally and Intermarche supermarket a short drive away. Local village offers convenient services.

Enjoyed so much we are returning in September.

Pleasant stay

The weather was still lovely and warm in October and we were able to eat outside under the lovely reeded patio area. The cottage was well equipped and Bev and David were on hand if anything else was needed. The cottage is well positioned for exploring the coast and towns. With 4 adults in the party it was nice for each couple to have a separate bathroom and room to spread out.

A great escape to completely relax and enjoy the beautiful views.

We had a thoroughly relaxing time at "casa Rosa" , enjoying the stunning views from a variety of locations around the property. Inside, we enjoyed either relaxing in the comfy snug whilst taking in the views or alternatively, retiring to the comfortable sitting room to enjoy a glass or two of wine. We did not take advantage of the extremely well equipped kitchen as we were only there for a couple of weeks. The property is away from the main road and is completely private apart from the owners home which is nearby. Beverly & David, the owners, are at hand to try to ensure their guests have an enjoyable vacation. Due to the hilly terrain and the steps both outside and inside the property, it is more suitable for able bodied people.

A little gem of a cottage in the hills not far from beaches

We spent a week at Casa Rosa. It is a lovely place to stay with little relaxation areas dotted around the property. The sun shines on the plunge pool morning til night, there is a beautiful shaded terrace next to it and a parasol and loungers directly at the pool.The cottage is very well equipped, for children also. Good sized bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and lovely living room and a little reading area ..plenty of places for quiet time. The owners are in the villa next door and are on hand with advice and any questions. There are excellent beaches a short drive away. Tavira is also a short drive, with smaller villages closer for groceries. We had a thoroughly relaxing time here, it was perfect for us and our two children. We loved this place.

Coast/Beach:

There are literally miles of sandy beaches nearby, the closest being Fuzeta, 20 minutes away by car. The Ilha de Tavira stretches from Tavira almost to Fuzeta - ferries operate in summer taking you from the river front to some of the best beaches in the Algarve. Popular beaches are Barril (take the beach train) Armona, Culatra, Santa Luzia, Pedras d'el Rei. Many have delightful beach bars and plenty of parking.

Travel:

Faro airport is 25 minutes drive on the A22 motorway. This property definitely requires the use of a car to access the beaches, shops, etc. Bike hire available in Moncarapho (10 minutes drive but bikes can be delivered)

Distances:

Santa Catarina: 5 minutes drive - Post Office, cafe, bakery, pharmacy, bank, news agent, mini market. Monthly farmers market.

Sao Bras de Alportal: 10 minutes drive - Restaurants, supermarkets, banks and shops, clinic.

Tavira: 30 minutes drive - Cinema complex, shopping centre, banks, restaurants, hospital, beach ferries.

Fuzeta: 20 minutes drive - Beach,ferries restaurants, market, restaurants.

Spanish Border: 30 minutes drive to Ayamonte, charming little Spanish port on Guardiana River (Border)

Further Details:

The ancient river port of Tavira straddles both sides of the Gilao River, has a collection of charming bridges, palm lined gardens and interesting architecture dating back to Roman times. The old market has been converted into a cultural centre of small shops and restaurants. There is also a modern shopping/cinema complex with plenty of parking.

Olhao is the largest fishing port in the Algarve. The busy fish and vegetable market is open 6 days a week with a vibrant Saturday market. Visit the islands of Armona and Culatra by ferry or water taxi from here.

Estoi is a picturesque old town with a palace, roman ruins and is famous for its May Day festival.

Further east, Cacela Velha is white washed village, overlooking the estuary from its 18th Century fort and pretty church. Manta Rota is a pretty walk further east and offers miles of sandy beaches and cafe bars

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa comprises an extensive lagoon area that follows 60 km (37 miles) of coastline between Manta Rota and Vale do Lobo. Made up of sand dune islands, marshland, salt-pans and shimmering freshwater lakes, the habitat is sanctuary for an astonishing assortment of flora and fauna, including birds such as the rare purple gallinule. The park headquarters at Quinta de Marim, 3 km (1.5 miles) east of Olhão, has a first-class visitor centre.
