About Rut Jónsdóttir

My name is Rut Jónsdóttir, I am 50 years olde CFO. My husband is August Gunnarson and he is a dentist. Together we have three grown up children. We love to spend time in Grindavík because of the nature and activities around. Also because it is located so near Reykjavík; only 40 minutes drive.

My mother was born in Grindavík and there live most of my relatives. I spent time with my grandparents in Grindavík when I was a child. Ever since then, the see-breeze, waves and the atmosphere draws me to this magic tow. The Atlantic ocean on one side and moss-grown lava on all other sides. This is nature you have never seen before.

I just purchased this house as a second home. I wan´t to share this with you as I want more people to enjoy this wonderful nature.

Rut Jónsdóttir purchased this villa in 2016

Why Rut Jónsdóttir chose Southern Peninsula

This property has history. It was built for people who had to evacuate the Vestmann-Island in the year 1973 due to volcanic eruption.

The house is very near the shore. Now the spring is here; we hear the migratory birds coming to the shore in Grindavík. In winter; Grindavík is a good place to stay at if you wan´t to see the Northern Lights.

The house has recently been renovated. There is a hot tub outside on the patio. All kitchen appliances are new as well as the beds and linen. There is a washing machine and washing lines outside.

The neighborhood is quiet and only short walk to the shoreline. If you walk along the shoreline towards east you will reach the fishing harbor. there you will also find restaurant, bar, culture house and tourist information.

What makes this villa unique

The town has restaurants and Guest Houses, a hotel, and brand new campground, with modern outdoor swimming facilities complete with hot tubs, a gym, shops, banks, car rentals, and all necessary service for tourists. Grindavík offers diverse recreational opportunities such as ATV adventures, Volcano Trips, horse rentals, trout fishing, and even a great 18-hole golf course with the ocean as its backdrop. There are miles of marked hiking trails through beautiful and breathtaking landscape for those who enjoy hiking. The cliffs along the shores of Reykjanestá offer magnificent birdlife for bird watching. There is a spectacular view over to Eldey from the cliffs; Eldey has the biggest population of gannets, or solan-geese, in the world. And Grindavík harbor is a great starting point for those who enjoy hikes along the shores.

The Blue Lagoon, situated just 5 km from Grindavík, is the most popular tourist destination in Iceland, for it is the perfect destination for some warm water relaxation, and it has also been known as a cure for many skin-conditions. The Magma house in Grindavík is a perfect opportunity for tourists to visit to get to know the history of salt fish production and earth energy, among other things.

A place where we shared the heavens as a family

  • 5 of 5

Rut, I didn't want to talk to anyone after we got home afraid they would pop my dreams of your home and Iceland. 4 days in your home it became ours . So modern, bright, efficient and quiet and we filled it with laughter. We saw the Northern lights from the hot tub and again on the road .Blue Lagoon was perfect. A little know spot we found in Grindavik is where the continents meet. North America and Europe. I was hoping to meet you and personally Thank you and wish you a Merry Christmas. Hope to return to where I left a piece of my soul. Linda Decatur and Allyson, Thomas and Amy

Lovely home in a quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful home is an excellent getaway situated on the edge of Grindavik. It had all the conveniences we needed for our stay (and more), was quite welcoming and comfortable, and it was close to shopping and great food in the town. It was plenty roomy for five of us (all friends) and the amenities were abundant, to include the washer/dryer, hot tub, and the outdoor seating area. The owner made it quite easy for booking, access, and use, including the instructions for the hot tub operation.

While we did not do many activities directly in Grindavik, it was a superb location for our journeys to Reykjavik and the western portions of Iceland. Of importance to us, was its relative vicinity to the airport, as we had a very early flight out our last morning in Iceland.

Clean, comfortable and very well-equipped

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent week in this comfortable house in Grindavik. We've stayed in many holiday homes over the years and this was one of the best - we really can't fault it.

Thank you, Rut, for being so pleasant to deal with, and for providing not only the essentials, but all the small things that make a difference when you are on holiday.

A Perfect Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this vacation home was just great. Our hostess was helpful and accommodating throughout the entire process. After arriving on a late flight into KEF, we only had a short drive to our vacation rental in Grindavik. We found all the creature comforts of home - clean, modern and efficient. Sleeping accommodations were perfect for five adults and our hostess thought of everything possible to ensure a comfortable stay. Grindavik is a great home base location with many of the Reykjavik and Golden Circle highlights within an easy day's drive. The town is on the seacoast and makes for an interesting place to stay with all the services needed for tourists. We would certainly book this home again if we ever do return. I would highly recommend it!

Perfect and Welcoming Home

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Grindavik and at Rut's home. We arrived 2 days before Christmas, and Rut had the home decorated with lights, both inside and out, and had a Christmas tree there to welcome us. The house is very clean and had more than enough room for our family of four. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to cook several meals, including Christmas dinner and cookies for Santa. We made ourselves at home here, and we explored the beautiful Reykjanes peninsula over a few winter days. The town has a Netto grocery, a bottle shop and quite a few restaurants. We were very comfortable here and felt welcomed by everyone we met. We thank Rut and her family for their thoughtful hospitality and for making our second vacation in Iceland so memorable.

Beautiful, calm, quiet.

  • 5 of 5

Everything here was fine, warm, calm, clean, and welcoming (I want to get more wall cabinets for my own house now - I want my own house to be as orderly and calm as this one!). Renting a home is such a nice choice to have, especially when you travel with children. I will definitely recommend this property to others - the location is near a volcano with a hiking a path and near the Blue Lagoon, and the drive to/from the airport is certainly short enough (apx 30 min). The hot tub is lovely to use, directions and precautions were excellent. Neighborhood is quiet and calm; owners' directions were easy to follow to find the property as well. If you're dressed warmly enough for the weather, not a problem to walk to a few restaurants (we drove, though); grocery store (Netto) has everything, even knitting supplies, but closes at 7 pm, so plan grocery shopping with that in mind. Local library has an interesting collection of stuffed local birds; local swimming pool is a very nice, very affordable experience, too!

The owner does answer questions if you have them when you're there! No worries if you have questions when you are there. There is also an awesome collection of maps and tourist brochures available. We didn't arrive with a set plan for every day, so it was enjoyable to read through the pile and pick out a bunch of "maybe's".

Grindavík is a typical fishing town surrounded by lava. The village mountain is Þorbjörn an old crater (243m) from the ice age. Now it is grassy and easy to climb and from the top you have the view over Grindavík on one side and the Blue Lagoon on the other.

The famous Blue Lagoon is only five minutes drive away.

But there is so much more to enjoy and experience in Grindavík. A walk along the shoreline to feel the breeze from the ocean is an experience in all weathers.

Popular activities ins Grindavík are:

Adventure tours at 4x4 Adventures Iceland

Outdoor swimming-pool

Golf at the new 18 hole golf course.

The local restaurants/cafés: Salthúsið and Bryggjan

Museum named Kvikan

Playground for the children.

The lively harbor

The Geothermal area in Krýsuvík and the lake close by named Kleifarvatn.

Reykjavík city center is 50 km drive.
