Overview

About the property

Tastefully modernised trullo, over a hectare of private land and a 15metre pool

Villa Antonio set in the Valley D’Itria between the hilltop towns of Ostuni, Cisternino and Martina Franca. In its own very private grounds of over a hectare the villa is perched up high looking down over its swimming pool and orchard of fruit and olive trees and fields beyond.

Villa Antonio is a traditional trullo with a tall conical stone roof on top of each of the main rooms – five in all. The structure helps keep the interior cool in the heat of the summer.

There is also a delightful 15 metre infinity swimming pool set just below the trullo with a shallow 50cm deep end for toddlers to play, sloping down to a 2 metre depth. Gaze out over the valley from the cool of the infinity pool . Surrounding the pool is the “solarium” in full sun, with loungers and parasoled tables.

Overlooking the pool is a large gazebo with cushioned stone sofas and beautiful carved tables with room for up to 20 people to relax and while the day away.

Nearer the villa is a second gazebo with a long stone table with stone benches for dining. A stone arch leads to a walled patio with barbecue for romantic or more private occasions.

The pool is open from June right through until end October or longer by special arrangement. The water is still a little cool (by Italian standards) in May.

There is no lifeguard and so the pool is strictly for swimmers only. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult swimmer at all times.

Our agent, Nicola lives nearby and is on hand to help out with any concerns and provide local information. We are just an hour away in Bari.

Being out in the wilds the house is not connected to the mains - instead it has:

A large 70 tonne water cistern under the main gazebo which provides the water for the pool and the house.

Giovanni come every Saturday to top up the water and check and clean the pool but it is a self cleaning constantly circulating design with an automatic low-chlorine treatment system. This means it is much gentler on the eyes, tastes just very slightly salty and is just lovely to swim in.

He also looks after the orchard and does all the other maintenance at the villa - he lives nearby and is always available if anything needs to be repaired.

The house has its own underground LPG tank and a water boiler set into the wall outside providing instant hot water should you want it.

The house has 5 entrances - every bedroom with its own access in and out. Each door has a full height safety glass panel plus a separate reinforced metal grid security door with built in insect grille. This means you can have the glass doors open, enjoying fresh air in the night safe in the knowledge you are keeping any unwanted intruders out.

A full outside lighting system means that you can wander around late at night without getting lost or even use the pool knowing you won't disturb any one. The lighting is a subtle low level system and adds to the romantic feel of the place at night as you bask in the residual heat and listen to the crickets playing their sounds.

About Simon Proctor

We are an Italian-English couple who wanted to invest in a little bit of the history of south Italy. Michaela is from the area and even though when we bought it we still lived in England we have now moved to Italy and so we can enjoy the trullo much more. For us the trullo represents a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal everyday life. .

Simon Proctor purchased this villa in 2010

Why Simon Proctor chose Ostuni

This villa combines the characteristic appeal of the trullo with is unique style and traditional comfort afforded by thick walls and conical roofs with the comforts we all want on holiday these days: mod-cons of a well equipped kitchen and bathrooms, tv/dvd, wifi etc with the self-contained luxuries of a large swimming pool, a gazebo for relaxing, another for dining, a stone barbecue in its own secluded area behind the villa.

All set in its own rural tranquility but within easy reach of amenities, charming towns and beaches on both sides of the heel of Italy.

This is a villa ideal for larger families or groups of friends. It can comfortably sleep seven and can accommodate an 8th by putting a toddler in a cot or a child on a portable bed.

Once here you don't need to move anywhere else - you have a wonderful swimming pool to swim or just keep cool in and a super large gazebo to relax under and keep your eye on the kids in the pool.

You have a choice of three eating areas: inside to avoid the heat, outside in the barbecue area or out at the top of the orchard-gardens overlooking the whole area at the stone table/stone benches under a beautiful gazebo. .

You also have three acres of grounds filled with olive and fruit trees to explore if you are feeling energetic.

What makes this villa unique

Villa Antonio offers you a unique self contained privacy being set in over a hectare of grounds with everything you need. If you want to cut yourself off for a week or two, venturing out only every few days for food a 5 minute drive away, come to Villa Antonio!

It is almost impossible to describe how lovely Villa Antonio is.

Everyone who comes here says how much nicer it is than they expected.

The pool is a real jewel - it is much bigger than you expect and suits those who like to swim lengths before breakfast as well as those who just want to play. It is also fully private - it is totally yours, not shared as with some villas and is not even over looked as the area is so quiet and tranquil.

The walls of the trullo average 1metre thick - so in the summer it keeps cool even when it is 30-35degrees outside.

The fireplace-snug makes it so cosy.

The narrow opening next to the fireplace leading to the lamia bedroom gives it the feeling of a secret room.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a wonderful stay at Villa Antonio.

The thick walls of the building did indeed keep uch of the intense heat out!

We used the pool ALL the time - my husband and children were in it morning and evening!

During the day we visited various places:

Martina Franca was lovely and especially so in the evening when it was buzzing with all the shops open until late.

We preferred Rosa Marina beach.

Alberobello was good to see too.

It was lovely everyday to return to this super trullo. So much thought has gone into the layout. The doors with the 'closed but meshed' option were marvelous as my daughters and I are not keen on bus at all.

Aldo the farmer opposite showed us all his animals.- what a variety! We bought several jars of his homemade honey.

The local supermarket (at Gallante) was so friendly too.

Quite a few of the nearby houses are holiday retreats for northern Italians and we had lovely chats with some of them.

Cisternino was lovely to walk around. St Anna's restaurant was lovely and you have to dress up a bit.

Nicola, the agent, was away during our stay but his mother Anna and brother who covered for him were so helpful and friendly.

We loved sitting under the gazebo - it had the best views of all!

We were so sad to leave Villa Antonio

Excellent trulli with great characher and fab pool

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderfully relaxing weeks holiday at the beautiful Trulli Antonio with our two daughters.

The trulli has been very well restored, with bags of character and retains many original features. It was well equipped with finished to a very high standard and its location was perfect.

Its in a rural location, set in beautiful countryside and the slightly bumpy track adds to the sensation of getting away from it all. There is a small supermarket less than 5 minutes from the villa and Martina Franca is 20 minutes away.

The pool was great, clean and well maintained and allowed plenty of privacy. The nearby Pegula provided essential shade for those wanting less sun, meaning we could stay around the pool area most the day if we wanted.

Simon was great to deal with from start to finish. The local agent helped us find the villa at the beginning and was available if we need to call him.

We would definitely recommend a stay

A great get-away from it all location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful family stay at the Villa Antonio. The trullo was well appointed, clean and comfortable and met our needs well. Night times were hot, and we missed not having any air conditioning or indeed fans, but this didn't spoil our enjoyment! The pool was the nicest pool we have experienced through a private let, and many hours were spent having fun in the water. There were plenty of places to sit and relax outside the villa (with good shade) and the choice of eating areas for al-fresco dining was varied. Our favourite was the stone table and benches overlooking the pool and delightful countryside.

We booked the villa for the 'relaxing' part of our 10 day holiday, so visits to the surrounding area were limited; however, the market at Martina Franca is well worth a visit and we enjoyed a visit to the beach at Rosa Marina.

The agent, Nicola, was helpful in showing us around the villa on arrival, and the pool was cleaned and maintained to a high standard. We would certainly recommend Villa Antonio as a great 'get away from it all' location, safe for children and families to enjoy. Thanks to Simon for a great stay!

Owner's Response: Dear Tanya, thanks for the kind and constructive review - I am very pleased that you so enjoyed your stay and you were particularly pleased with the swimming pool - I'll pass your comments on to Giovanni. While it was a hot time while you there it is not unusual and I will definitely consider installing some fans in the coming weeks. I very much hope you will consider coming back to Villa Antonio in the future Best wishes, Simon

A jewel in the crown of the landscape

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of five (two students and mother in law in her eighties ) and all thoroughly enjoyed the Trullo over 2 weeks in August which was clean, comfortable, well equipped, cool overnight, remote and quiet, all without being cut off from Martina Franca, Cisternino or Ceglie Messapica which are all within 15/20 minutes to the centres. The pool is an absolute luxury as it’s large, with a countryside view and we found ourselves often attracted to return for pool afternoons and evening aperitifs outside time after time. For first time visitors to Puglia we clearly only scraped the surface of what’s on offer in the surrounding area from Mozzarella/Burrata factories (try the Stracciatella) to the 2€/litre Primitivo wine from Cisternino (bring your own container, however actually very good). The Conran shop ceramic suppliers are not too distant in ……… We tried probably to do too much including Gallipoli, Lecce, Otranto, Alberobello and all the local good value markets along with the close of the concert season (end August) in Ceglie Messapica piazza which was brilliant after dinner. Eating out was by far the best value we have found in Italy after many years in and out of the country (try the Cisternino buy in the butcher/eat in the restaurant next door experience.) The villa agent was extremely helpful and the pool man a pleasure. We look forward to returning and discovering a further layer of local Puglia.

Owner's Response: We are delighted you enjoyed your holiday in Villa Antonio so very much. Yes the pool is a real bonus and being a salt water pool is also a pleasure for anyone suffering skin or eye irritations. You've clearly made some great discoveries in the area and these are great tips for future guests. Thanks for taking the time to write this super review Simon & Michaela

Wonderful break - We'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for an authentic rural Italian hideaway and feel blessed to have stumbled upon the wonderful Villa Antonio. It's a beautiful trullo with lovely thick walls, pretty coned roofs and adorable nooks and crannies for our children to explore.

The accommodation was full of wonderful character and the bathrooms were modern and clean. I love to cook and there was everything I needed to cater for a large party. The kitchen was well equipped and the bbq on the terrace was perfect. Many a night was spent sitting outside enjoying the alfresco dining whilst sampling the local wine and stargazing, just lovely.

Days were spent at the pool. This was the reason we booked this trullo in particular, the pool is big enough to swim lengths but also has a shallow area for the kids. The water was warm and the pool area was clean and well maintained. The big gazebo near the pool was great too and we often had lunch there.

Just before we got to the trullo we passed Gino's supermarket, in Gallante, it's small but has everything. The children had fun practicing their Italian with the owner who was very friendly!

We were a party of four adults and three children and we all agreed we had such an amazing time that we'll definitely be staying here again. Thank you Villa Antonio - Bellissimo!

Esperienza stupenda!

The Valley d'Itria is a picturesque unspoilt rural area of central south Puglia. It is full of the traditional conical-roof stone houses - trulli - and charming towns and villages each with its fascinating historic centre and great value/quality market.

Lots of 'agriturismo' , farmhouses offering local cooking mainly at lunchtime plus a great selection of amazing value restaurants make it a gourmet's paradise.

At Gallante, the local crossroads just 1,5km away, is a little supermarket with fresh produce, ready cooked focaccia and everything you need to supply your food-needs on holiday.

The local towns, Martina Franca, Cisternino and Ostuni, 8, 10 and 16 km away respectively offer local markets, great restaurants and pretty historic centres plus necessary amenities such as chemists, hospital (Martina) etc.
