Overview

About the property

A charming and authentic 16th century Highland cottage close to Loch Awe, Argyll, which provides a cosy country retreat in the village of Kilchrenan. It has recently been redecorated retaining the cottage style and further extended to provide extra sleeping accommodation. It has an enclosed, pet-friendly garden, outdoor decking, dining area, woodshed and rope swing.

The main cottage is over two levels. Downstairs there is an entrance hall, leading off to kitchen, living room and bathroom. The living room has a wood burning stove, and is comfortably furnished including a sofa-bed for extra guests. The kitchen has a Rayburn stove, not only for cooking but also heating the water which keeps the cottage constantly cosy. There is also a dishwasher, gas cooker, microwave and fridge. Stairs lead off from the kitchen to two charming upstairs bedrooms (one double and one twin). Outwith the main cottage accommodation there is a conjoined modern extension with separate entrance, ideal if two families are sharing. There is one main wooden clad chalet-style twin bedroom and a small twin bedroom upstairs accessed by way of a fixed ladder. This is ideal for older children (though perhaps not for small children as it has a hatch opening). There is also a toilet and shower. The extension also houses the washing machine and tumble dryer.

Overall, the cottage sleeps six people comfortably, with space for eight (and ten at a push using the sofa bed!). There is Wi-Fi and electric wall heating throughout, and satellite TV, DVD player and record player and boombox in the living room.

The cottage is close to beautiful Loch Awe with boating and fishing opportunities, as well as wonderful views of sunsets over the water. It sits in lovely countryside with many walking, climbing and cycling routes nearby. The four-star Taychreggan Hotel is a 5 mins walk away and provides fine dining on your doorstep. The four-star Ardenasaig Hotel is also not far away. The village of Taynuilt is a ten minute drive and has a grocer, butcher and post office for essentials, golf course and the rail/bus link to Glasgow, as well as the renowned Taynuilt Hotel and Whisky shop. The bustling, cosmopolitan town of Oban, the gateway to the Isles, is 35 mins away, for shops, restaurants and the cinema, as well as Caledonian MacBrayne services to Mull, Iona and the Inner Hebrides.

About Joy Forsyth

We live in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow and have spend many years holidaying in the West coast of Scotland with our two children, dogs and extended family. Our aim in life was to have a place of our own there and in 2014 it came to pass when we viewed Cuil Cottage and it was love at first sight! When we bought the cottage, it needed a lot of care and attention and since then we have spent a wonderful couple of years giving it some TLC whilst aiming to retain its country cottage character and charm.

Our children are older now, and we can't get there quite as much as we would like, so it makes sense to let you enjoy it too.

Joy Forsyth purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Joy Forsyth chose Inveraray

We may be biased, but we think Cuil cottage is unique! It is one of the oldest cottages in Kilchrenan and we believe it dates back to the 16th century. The village has seen a great deal of history in its time, andt is said that Rob Roy MacGregor attended a wedding in Kilchrenan, where he got involved in a fight and had to flee through the village and across the water to Portsonachen. This crossing of the water was used for over 1000 years as the main route across Loch Awe and a way to bring the Scottish Kings and Queens for burial on Iona.

What makes this cottage unique

It combines cosy cottage charm, history and hopefully everything you will need for a comfortable, relaxing stay.

Whilst being relatively remote, there are 2 top hotels within easy access and there is much to do in the area.

Great cottage for a family holiday in Argyll

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is beautiful. Spotlessly clean and all the facilities excellent. Beds were comfortable, shower in the Annex was good, and the wifi excellent (although no mobile signal anywhere in the village). The Rayburn (like an Aga) made the kitchen really cosy, and all the cooking facilities were excellent. The wood burning stove in the living room was great, and there was a huge selection of DVDs and CDs if you didn't find anything to watch on the TV in the evenings. The setting is stunning - looking onto Loch Awe, and there are plenty of nice walks with the dog. There is plenty to do by way of visits by car - the Inverawe Smoke House was interesting with a brilliant riverside walk, and the Cruchean Power Station was fascinating (if you like amazing engineering feats). Oban is close and a nice town - and the Oban Fish Bar does the best fish and chips (and monkfish scampi) ever - Rick Stein was right!

Wonderful time at this lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was exactly as described. Incredibly cosy. We could easily have been 8 people. The living room and kitchen are charming and very comfortable; the beds were excellent; everything is well equipped - no need for towels, linen...all brand new. Beautiful bird sighting at the various feeders (woodpeckers...). Plenty of local guides for hiking. You can easily stay around and do beautiful hikes around the lake (Loch Awe) or visit Oban, Glencoe and other beautiful areas. My favorite was hiking on the island of Kerrera just off Oban or sea-kayaking in Oban.

Joy was very responsive and made sure our stay was pleasant. I highly recommend.

Cozy, rural, peaceful

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for week. Peaceful. Not idea area for dog walkers as none straight from the door but found a few by driving a few miles away.

Loved being able to access the Loch. Would be ideal with a table n chair there so the we could have sat and enjoyed it more.

Cottage fantastic. Everything we needed and more!! Beautifully decorated. And bed so comfy too. The garden was a real bonus. Beautiful decking and we lived the little tree swing. Well kept and obviously much loved.

Recommend to those wanting a relaxing break away from it all.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely review and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay and the peace and quiet of the cottage. It would be lovely to have a seat down by the loch - and we are working on it! However the land does not belong to us at the moment, but to our very kind neighbour who lets us use it. We are currently looking into buying our own land close by, and be assured that when we do, there will be seating and more one it! We are glad that you found good dog walks round about as there are many, though as you say, most do require you to drive to get there. We hope you found the good ones at Dalavich, Inverinan and Glen Nant!

The perfect antidote to city life

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful five days at Cuil Cottage. It really was the perfect antidote to city life in London.

The cottage itself was cosy and the beds were very comfy! There was plenty of room to accommodate a travel cot for our five month old in the main bedroom of the cottage. The extension was ideal for Granny to stay as it allows you to have your own space.

The outdoor space was perfect when the sun was shining with the tree swing being a favourite. The 2 min walk to the lochside provides stunning views across Loch awe. I'd recommend taking midgie repellant particularly this time of year! . It was a great base to explore the local area. We took the ferry from Oban to Mull to spend the day in Tobermory - a must!

If you're looking for a picture postcard cottage in a stunning setting then this is the place for you.
