Overview

About the property

Farmhouse sleeps 7, 3 bedrooms with stunning views across volcanic landscape

Our holiday home in the tiny rural hamlet of Groslier is the ultimate getaway. A converted farmhouse, the property commands stunning views across the beautiful landscape of the Auvergne. It’s a perfect base for exploring this wild and beautiful part of France: nature is on your doorstep so you don't need to go far to experience the impressive array of flora and fauna on offer. There are numerous towns and villages to explore, many with impressive Medieval and Romanseque architecture. The Auvergnats are proud of their culture, so there are plenty of fairs, musical events, shows and exhibitions to choose from. Restaurants in the area offer a superb cuisine based on wonderful local meats and cheeses, and for the adventurous there's a cafe renowned throughout France for its lunches of frogs' legs! The house is in a popular area for walking and cycling and is not far from picturesque lakes for boating and swimming.

The house is spacious and well equipped, with the living space on the first floor to take best advantage of the fabulous views. There are three bedrooms, two double rooms on the ground floor, sharing a bathroom, and a large family room on the second floor with its own bathroom. The first floor is a light open plan living space with a fully fitted kitchen, comfortable lounge with log burning stove and dining area.

The property benefits from WiFi, UK FreeView TV, electric radiators in every room, dishwasher, washing machine and cooling fans.

The house is surrounded by two acres of land, mostly laid to meadow. There is a terrace with patio furniture and a barbecue for guests to use. Access to the house is via a fairly steep drive, but there is ample parking for multiple vehicles. The house is at a fairly high altitude of 1,100m in a very rural area up a winding country lane - ideal for more adventurous cyclists!

About Lucy Norton

Originally from Blackburn, Lancashire, I now live near Bedford with my husband. I work as a business valuer in a large accountancy firm. I am a keen viola player, and my viola travels to Groslier with me whenever I come. I serenade the cows while my husband goes off on his bike around the local roads...

Lucy Norton purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Lucy Norton chose Compains

I visited the Auvergne with my parents when I was a teenager, and loved the area. After getting married I brought my husband back here and he loved it too. We bought the house in 2004 (in retresopect, rather foolishly!), when it was nothing more than a derelict shell with no connected electricity or running water. We embarked on a fairly tortuous renovation project (it's tricky when you are mostly in another country!), eventually completing the basic works by 2007. By 2010 it was - at last - all decorated and ready for its first season of rental.

My husband and I love coming here, to get away from the hustle and bustle of home life and enjoy the fresh air and countryside. We enjoy walks and visiting the local shops and restaurants, and my husband gets out on his bike whenever he can.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Without a doubt the view is the defining feature of this house. We never tire of it, and with the seasons and the weather it constantly changes. It's lovely to sit outside with a glass of something and watch the buzzards and kites spiral overhead during the day, or spot the bats leaving our barn to go hunting at dusk. Inside, we've made it cosy and comfortable, and on a wet day I like nothing more than to curl up on the sofa with a good book!

Peace and quiet with incredible views

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in this house in mid August. The location and views are brilliant, and perfect if you want to get away from it all. The area in general was quite busy (mid August) when we went to the local town and the various activities, but the house location was super peaceful and isolated. It has views across the volcanic landscape that we spent many a happy evening soaking up along with wine and local produce. The favourite location for the kids (we have 11yr old twins) was Super Besse, where there was lots to do from mountain biking, to lake action and Europe's longest zip wire.

Spacious house in a great position for walking and cycling

  • 5 of 5

Four of us stayed at Groslier for a week in mid June - a wonderful time for long evenings and amazing wild flowers. We were very lucky with the weather and cycled or walked all day every day - enjoying exhilarating rides across the plateau above the house on quiet roads with fantastic views. Be warned - if you cycle in this area you're likely to be climbing 1000m - 1500m on any one ride (well that's what we did).

The house is light, spacious and comfortable, with good cooking facilities and spaces outside for sitting in sun or shade. We ate all our meals outside (which I think is probably not typical for a week here!). Just a note - you have to carry everything downstairs and down the outside steps to do this, which is fine if you're fit and healthy. Wonderful sunsets from the terrace and a chance for the birdwatcher in our party to spot a black redstart and other rareties. We enjoyed watching the local herd of cows slowly and quietly making their way along the pasture below the house each evening, and on the last night a young hare joined us too.

The market in Besse was well worth visiting on Monday morning - great to be able to stock up at the beginning of the week, as we wanted to avoid using the car as much as possible to make the most of the countryside on foot and on 2 wheels. Which we did.

Excellent - Better Than The Pictures

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed a week in this beautiful farmhouse. It is a great feeling to arrive at a week long vacation stay and realize that it is better than the pictures. We felt like guests in someone's house. We did not feel like we were in a rental. Secondly, the views from the windows are stunning! Our criteria were to find a place "away from it all" accompanied with beautiful views. This property hit the mark. The owners appear to be extremely professional and there were no surprises. We highly recommend it and we hope to return.

The Perfect Escape

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a quiet getaway, in a less travelled part of France, you should love this house. Situated on a hillside, with amazing panorama view of the old volcanoes, it is 'the perfect escape'. Small towns and villages to explore, quite roads to walk, run, cycle or just sit outside and relax. Well maintained and presented, providing spacious living with everything you will need. Friendly, helpful owners who are easy to deal with and communicate well. Have stayed here twice and have just booked to go again. It is that good!

Ein rundum gelungener Urlaub

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

The main attractions are the surrounding hills and countryside. There are many maps and guidebooks in the house for visitors to use. Even if you're not up for a strenuous hike, the house makes a great 'hide' to watch the wildlife, changing patterns of weather and the routine of farmers across the valley!

It's a great area for keen cyclists - the house itself is up a 2km, 8% gradient road, never mind the cols within easy reach.

The nearby ski resort of Super Besse becomes a base for outdoor activities in the summer, with mountain biking, water sports and one of the longest zip wires in Europe for the brave!
