Overview

About the property

3 bedroom, 2 with en-suites,walking distance to World Heritage Jurassic Coast

Presenting a rare opportunity to rent in the highly sought after thatched village of Otterton, “The Shippen” is the mid-terrace of an award winning luxury converted barn complex situated in a designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. Our home is located in an idyllic courtyard consisting of 12 homes and boasts stunning views of the Otter Valley and the River Otter. The house comprises two ground floor double bedrooms each with en-suites, and a large double bedroom on the lower ground floor with views over the garden and river. The super-king bed in the “Master Suite”, and the double bed in the “Rose Suite”, are custom made by John Ryan. There is a utility room on the lower ground floor which provides a toilet and sink for use with the "Garden room".

The living/dining room, kitchen and powder room are on the first floor. The first floor is architecturally stunning with wood beams and glass walls allowing full enjoyment of the high-beamed cathedral ceilings, oak floors and period fireplace. The house is furnished to an extremely high standard with a mix of antiques and custom made furnishings. Kitchen equipment is of a professional level.

At the back of the house the large Landscaped garden slopes gently down to the river. You can watch people ambling along the river path that takes you the 1 3/4 miles to Budleigh Salterton. This is one of my favourite walks. It is flat and appeals to people of all activity levels. You can also walk out of the house and be on the Coastal Path. Some of the path is steep with magnificent views.

We have a garden table and six chairs, as well as a "Marlborough" bench.Guests might like to eat out doors, or sit with a G&T and enjoy the birdsong.

This beautiful home offers a fabulous holiday base from which to enjoy the many natural and cultural attractions of the area. Otterton is a picturesque thatched village with a fabulous pub serving locally produced food in a warm and welcoming community. There is easy walking access to the Regency beach towns of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton, as well as the West Devon Coastal Path.

Some local venues worth exploring are: Otterton Mill - their breads, cakes and scones are fresh daily and taste wonderful, The Donkey Sanctuary, and Pecorama - gardens, games and trains. Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley about 30 minutes away. A trip to the caves at the seaside town of Beer and an exploration of Topsham with its little port and village charm, and of course Darts Farm shops and cafe are a must. Should you wish to venture further afield, the Cathedral City of Exeter is only a 30 minute drive away, Dartmoor only 45 minutes, and the fossil beaches of Charmouth and Lyme Regis 40 minutes away. The whole area is well served by public transit.

There are lots of additional opportunities for children. The facilities at Ladram Bay, 1 mile away are available for use on a daily basis. Children can enjoy the play areas, mini golf, etc. and the game machines. There is a lovely cafe at Ladram and the ice-cream is delicious.

Sidmouth is a charming town with incredible views of the Jurassic Coast cliffs. The promenade is a great place to stroll. There are windsurfers and people paragliding around when the weather is right. The best icecream in Sidmouth can be found at "A Taste of Sidmouth."

Finally, if you would like to fish please look up fishing opportunities that will suit your needs. For river fishing please ask at Otterton Mill. Don't forget to bring your binoculars, as many birds migrate through here.

About Belinda Shoemaker

Hello, my husband, Ken, and I purchased The Shippen, as our second home. We are based in California and enjoy spending several months a year back in our Devon home. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

I, Belinda am a retired Speech and Language Therapist. I also worked in high-end Real Estate in California and am now a writer.

Ken is a genius, ( very proud wife) and works in Silicon Valley designing computer chips. We have a wonderful daughter who is an opera singer.

Belinda Shoemaker purchased this barn in 2015

Why Belinda Shoemaker chose Otterton

We fell in love with The Shippen and the award winning courtyard in which it is set. We love the easy walks out onto the river path and the coastal path.We are very fortunate to be so close to the outstanding beauty of the cliffs that line the Jurassic Coast. Having Otterton Mill and a village shop almost on our doorstep is a big plus.We love the drama of this house. The vaulted and high ceilings really appealed to us, as did the walls of glass.

What makes this barn unique

It is rare to find and be able to rent a home for the holidays in this quaint thatched village. People come for miles to enjoy the walks and the Mill. You can watch the flour milling if you are around on milling days. there are 2 per month.

Our neighbours are wonderful. We hope you will respect them and not be loud. This is not a party house.

A memorable family holiday at The Shippen

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful family holiday at The Shippen. The house is extremely well equipped , attractive decor and furnishings, comfortable beds and quality bed linen with a plentiful supply of towels. Otterton is an excellent setting to enjoy the Devon countryside and in particular the many beautiful coastal walks.

Well situated for many Devon attractions. A quietly situated property withl friendly neighbours.

  • 4 of 5

The property was very clean and tidy. It was exactly the country style we were expecting. The local pub provided good meals with a varied menu. Walking was excellent around the local area. The property was well situated for the river walk, and bakery. Walking to Budleigh Salterton was easy and only about two and a half miles along the river. Otters were spotted during our stay.

We enjoyed the centrality of the cottage allowing us to visit places within a few miles.

A beautiful barn conversion with large garden and rural outlook.

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely gorgeous place to stay. Beautifully furnished, well-equipped and comfortable. Upside down house to enjoy the views from the first floor. Delightful courtyard setting with otter fountain and river, trees and open fields at the bottom of the garden. Nice welcome and spotlessly clean. We were very happy with the property and the location for a quiet countryside and seaside based holiday with walks on the doorstep and easy access to the lovely villages of East Devon.

Peaceful location, good facilities & parking.

  • 4 of 5

Overall a lovely, character property with a large garden (which needs some TLC) leading down to the river, in a good location for walking, cycling or exploring the South Devon coastline.

At the end of my holiday I was disappointed that I didn't receive my security deposit refund within the stated 2 weeks.

I contacted the owner when 4 weeks had passed & eventually after several email exchanges, I was refunded after 5 weeks.

Once this problem is sorted out I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the property.

Owner's Response: We have a new gardener and the garden is looking fabulous! As I told you in several emails I contacted owners direct within the stated two weeks to refund your deposit. As I told you in our unusually extensive series of emails, that had you sent me your bank details as I requested promptly I could have taken care of it sooner. You denied receiving my email request for your bank details, when you finally sent them to me you received your refund immediately.
