About the property

A Casetta is one of the three stylish holiday properties of "Les Bergeries du Cabardès", an idyllic retreat tucked away in a little Midi village, almost on the doorstep of two unmissable world heritage sites: the medieval Cité of Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi. A Casetta is part of one of the two imaginatively converted barns which comrpise the property. The award-winning and orginal gardens feature an octagonal swimming pool, and a red cedar hot tub. Les Bergeries du Cabardès makes a perfect base for enjoying traditional village life (fetching croissants from the bakery, watching a boules match), for country walks and bike rides, and for exploring Langeudoc Roussillon's Cathar castles, Mediterranean coast, Roman remains, Pyrenean peaks, medieval abbeys, vineyards, sleepy villages and myriad hidden byways.

About Susan Griffiths

After a number of years on skis or sailing boats, I settled in Crete, and then in Corsica, home of my husband, Louis. I looked without success for the house of my dreams in Corsica, and then discovered a marvellous area (Aude).... and the house. Aude is beautiful, unspoilt, varied, and easy of access. I shuttle to Corsica and the UK, to visit Louis and my family but mostly I'm at home at my lovely "Bergeries du Cabardès" where I'm delighted to welcome guests now that the hard work of renovating half ruined barns and creating a gorgeous garden with pool and hot tub out of a field, is finished. Most of my 4 decades as an adult have been outside the UK, so I'm bilingual in French and can get by in a few other languages. I know Aude well and am happy to share my knowledge with my guests.

Susan Griffiths purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Susan Griffiths chose Moussoulens

I'd been living in the most beautiful island in the Med (Corsica, the "mountain in the sea") but wanted to have easier access to my friends and family in the UK. As a Mediterranean adoptee, I had to find an area far enough south to be able to grow olive trees and be surrounded by vineyards, be within an easy drive both of the sea and of ski-able mountains, and be within 15 minutes' by car of an airport, a station, the motorway and a town. After Corsica, I could only live in somewhere extremely beautiful, varied, quiet and unspoilt. And what's more I wanted lots of diversity (historically, culturally and sportily) of places to visit. A tall order, and the only place which fitted my bill in France was Aude. Cathar castles, wonderful wine, trad markets, the Canal du Midi and heaps else.

What makes this cottage unique

From our village you can go in any direction: the scenery is always gorgeous, ever changing. I defy anyone (except city-livers wanting nightlife) to get bored here with such a variety of places to see and things to do. As well as our famous world heritage sites: the medieval Cité of Carcassonne (15 minutes) and the Canal du Midi (5-10 minutes) we have Cistercian abbeys, Cathar castles, marvellous old city centres (Narbonne,Toulouse, Montpellier, Perpignan, 60-90 minutes), cave paintings, Roman sites, a book and arts village, and a multitude of vineyards. You can walk, cycle, play golf, ride, kayak, play tennis, even ski. All with the bonus of staying in a charcater property in its own grounds which is in the heart of a traditional village, with bakery etc.

(Times given are by car).

Simply superb

  • 5 of 5

Just returned after our second stay this year in one of Susan's gives. We will be going back next year. The homes are really beautifully equipped with everything you could possibly want on Holiday. The gardens, pool and hot tub are wonderfully maintained with lovely decking areas to relax. Susan is a wonderful host and is always willing to give that "over and above" service. We love it here and as we say will be returning next year.

Tranquil, relaxing holiday with easy access to many places of interest.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, compact home with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Very tastefully decorated and clean, as on the photos. Brilliant welcome pack with all the essentials (tea, coffee, detergents for washing machine & dishwasher and loads more) which meant there was no need for a dash to the shops on arrival and no need to buy things that would have remained largely unused.Very convenient location as there is a local Boulangerie for early morning croissants and baguettes and also a very friendly Café/restaurant within a few minutes walk. There was a private patio where we could enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the morning sun. Added to this it takes only a few minutes by car to get on the main road from Toulouse to Carcassonne. We easily found plenty to do each day within a close radius and plenty more that we would like to do on a return visit. Carcassonne was an easy drive, we also visited a lovely paper mill and had the chance to see some Cathar ruins without having to make any long journeys.

The garden is beautiful (and often had a gentle cool breeze, which was very welcome in the blazing sunshine) with lovely views across the French countryside. There is a smallish pool, which is perfect for cooling down in, after a long day.

The proprietor Sue made us very welcome, was always at hand for help and advice but never overbearing or intrusive.

A very relaxing holiday in the perfect setting for sight seeing.

Enjoyed a wonderful week taking in the benefits of this excellent accommodation in a gorgeous setting to recharge the batteries. Our gite had everything you could possibly need along with the pool and hot tub. Sue was an incredible hostess and went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed and was great at offering suggestions of things to do and visit. Hope one day to return

Delightful hideaway in rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully restored and equipped to a high standard, this is an utterly charming apartment, well located for exploring Carcassonne, the canal du Midi, and the wonderful surrounding countryside and historic villages. Being within walking distance of the village for morning croissants, and supper at the local cafe/ restaurant is an added bonus, as are the pool and hot tub in the garden!

tranquil and romantic

  • 5 of 5

A wonderfully appointed quaint romantic hideaway. Lovely views of the pyrenees from the veranda, an immaculately kept garden and pool, and the added bonus of the new hot tub too! Sue has a plethora of ideas for places to visit to suit all tastes from visiting the Citadel at Carcassonne to lunching by the Canal du midi, watching the boats pass through the locks while you eat, or cycling down the tow paths or white water rafting , there is something for everyone. We will return again to this fascinating area, full of history, markets, vineyards and culture, the perfect romantic getaway.

A Great Escape

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in 'A Casetta' which was the perfect fit for a couple. The property was well maintained when we arrived, with all the amenities you would want during a self-catering holiday.

We had a private terrace which was a good spot for evening sun and although there were two other parties in the neighbouring properties, we were mostly undisturbed.

Sue was very friendly on arrival and there if we had any queries during our stay, and due to the property's set up, we never felt that we were imposing and made use of the pool whenever the sun came out!

The village was lovely for a short stroll in the evening, with pizza van on a Saturday night (definitely recommend those) and in an ideal location to get to Carcassonne and many other highlights of the region. There is a large supermarket on the edge of Carcassonne, 10 minutes away and there is also a small shop and lovely boulangerie in the village.

We would definitely recommend this property and hope to return ourselves! If you are happy to hire a car then you can reach towns, the coast and the mountains from this property.
