About MRS DOROTHY NEARY

I sleep in the bedroom in which I was born here at Laneside Farm and have tap-root connections to Laneside! My husband, Terry, & I feel privileged to live here. Our ancestors came down from Roxborough Castle in Scotland with Mary Queen of Scots and served her whilst she was held captive nearby. In recognition of their loyalty, Mary gave them land and we have farmed through the generations since. Sheep and cattle graze opposite the cottage terrace on land farmed by our family and the local butcher. Laneside will appeal to those who like the sights and sounds of the country without necessarily the mud and smells! I love this place and would like to share it with you...

MRS DOROTHY NEARY purchased this cottage in 1968

Why MRS DOROTHY NEARY chose Hope

My parents were born nearby in the two villages which were flooded when the Derwent Valley (Dambusters) reservoirs were built. My father came from Derwent village, my mother from Ashopton. Both now lie under the waters of the reservoirs. (We have a fascinating video of my late father speaking to camera when he took us to the dams after a record period of drought many years ago. He traced out the farms where he and my mother lived, showed us the remaind of Derwent Hall and Derwent church and outlined the route he took to school each day).

My parents were tenant farmers who struggled to buy Laneside Farm in 1945, working hard for many decades to repay the mortgage. I have lived here all my life (apart from an interlude at agricultural college) and never tire of the surroundings that hold so many happy and poignant memories for me.

What makes this cottage unique

Laneside farmhouse was built over 450 years ago and the cottages were former barns added over the years. When they were converted to cottages, they won an award for “sympathetic conservation.” It’s a lovely setting with the river weaving its way around the edge of the farmyard with garden seating, tables and green lawn by the waters’ edge. The buildings are grouped around the farmyard, private, yet close enough to us so that we can be of help if there is a problem.

Hope centre, just a few minutes’ walk away, is the principal village in the Hope Valley with excellent shopping, eating and the main regional amenities – schools, clinic and medical centre.

Transport links are superb: Hope village rail station, just 4 min walk, is on the main line connecting Sheffield and Manchester with Intercity Network links to all major UK cities. There is an excellent bus service with one of especial interest which links all the villages of the White Peak down to Bakewell that you can hop on and off so that you are not limited to circular walks.

Notes:
We are at the geographical centre of The Peak Park, within The High Peak - that area within the Peak District which is protected from commercial development and which has the highest hills and the prettiest villages - and the most charming pubs. Laneside Farm is located on the A6187 Hope Valley Road on the edge of Hope Village with handy access to the rail station and bus stops. Nearby Castleton with its ancient Norman Castle and Caverns is 2 miles down the road or a pleasant half-hour stroll across the fields. You can take the train from Hope Station up and down the valley for walk-and-ride-back days out. For example: take the train up to Edale and walk back - downhill all the way! We are 15 mins drive from Chatsworth, Bakewell & Eyam and 20 mins from Buxton. We are at the boundary with the Dark and White Peaks with a myriad walking options. You can forget the car for most of your stay...

Lovely stay at Laneside Cottages. The 4 days went far to quickly. Cottage was really cozy and spotlessly clean. Owners are very friendly and make you feel very welcome. great location with lots of walks to choose from. Highly recommended!!

Oh, oh...

  • 2 of 5

Too small, beds uncomfortable, shower was a joke, oven inaccessable, fridge inaccessable, not enough storage space for food, internet reception a joke, tv controls didn't work properly, neighbours were friendly and helpful.

Great location beside the river, where we did see the kingfisher a couple of times.

  • 5 of 5

Excellent property, had everything we needed close to all the Peak District attractions.

Owner were very helpful and although the shower went wrong, it was quickly replaced with a new unit.

Can recommend this properly.

Peak District holiday

  • 5 of 5

A very tranquil setting in a beautiful part of the UK. Really peaceful with the view over the river and its wildlife. The cottage was well equipped. An excellent basis for exploring the area.

Idyllic and peaceful, the cottage had charm and comfort. A very beautiful place indeed.

Everything was for ease and comfort with the smallest of details kindly thought of. It is so peaceful here, a real birdwatcher's paradise including kingfishers, grey wagtails and even a red necked merganza. Lots of ducklings too. The building is a joy, a cosy retreat and our hosts couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. We'll be back.
