About this property

Cottage with parking; sleeps 4; walking distance to beach; dogs welcome.

This former fisherman's cottage has been extended to provide very comfortable accommodation for 4. Both bedrooms have en suite facilities (one bath, one shower) and there is also a downstairs toilet. The sunny front garden is a lovely spot to enjoy a glass of wine and the car space in the front means you do not have to battle for parking.

Good quality beds and bedlinens ensure a relaxing stay and the kitchen is also well equipped. Babbacombe is a quiet sideshoot of Torquay situated with a wonderful panorama of beautiful Babbacombe Bay. From the grassy Babbacombe Downs visitors sit and enjoy the fine views over the bay towards Teignmouth and Exmouth. Oddicombe Beach, recently awarded again a Blue Flag, is below and while the path down to the beach is steep - and a lot steeper coming back up - there is a cliff railway/funicular so it is accessible to most people. ( The funicular is temporarily closed but is due to reopen in summer 2023. Meanwhile there is a free bus operating a shuttle every hour - best check if this is important to you!)
The beach has a bar, cafe shop and watersports and good seating on steps while deckchairs are available and kayaks and paddleboards are also there for hire. This is just one of the beaches in the Bay, several of which are Bule Flag status.
Our visitors are spoilt for choice and a full list is provided to our guests including a list of dog- friendly beaches. Explore a little and you will find some hidden coves: Anstey's Cove is a gem, Elbury Cove one of our favourites with clear waters and a visiting seal or two. A premier gastropub is even nearer, again down a steep hill but the views are worth it. There is excellent walking from the cottage along the coast path and over the Downs towards Torquay, approximately 1 mile south, a lovely walk with breathtaking views.
Attractions within easy walking distance include: Babbacombe Model Village, a theatre, award winning fish and chip restaurants, Byegones Museum, Kents cavern plus a range of shops in Babbacombe and St Marychurch, excellent tea shops and a patisserie, many hotels and cafes. There are a range of supermarkets within easy reach and a large Sainsburys and M and S about 2 miles away. In Torquay itself there is the harbour, a Big Wheel in the summer months, a theatre, a cinema, arcades, a tourist information centre plus a range of restaurants to suit every pocket and taste, Michelin starred restaurants as well as budget eateries.
The beach at Abbey Sands has safe bathing and is particularly suitable for families with shallow waters and sand excellent for building sandcastles! Paddle boarding in the summer months here is also fun.
Babbacombe and Torquay are part of the Torbay area and include Paignton - a visit to the zoo is a must - and the charming fishing port of Brixham with its replica Golden Hind. We suggest a stroll along the coast path , or the John Musgrave Heritage Trail to take in the views followed by a pasty or refreshment at Berry Head. Ferries are available in the summer to take visitors to Dartmouth, well worth a visit, and of course the Agatha Christie house Greenway is an easy drive, unless you want to take the vintage bus, steam train or bus. The Bay is well known for its palms and temperate climate, though be prepared for a coastal breeze and occasional sea mists - that's when to head for one of the beach cafes for a hot chocolate or a cream tea at Widecombe in the Moor. Totnes is also a popular destination - the Friday market is particularly good. Devon is well known for its moors, picturesque villages and coastal scenery was well as for its history and geology. There are numerous beauty spots and local walking groups are always keen to welcome visitors. The cathedral city of Exeter is a pleasant 30 minute drive.
Within a short walking distance of St George cottage is a diving centre. The witches hat shaped rock at Ansteys Cove is well known to climbers. Visitors can try all manner of watersports from diving to coasteering. About 400 m from the cottage is a disability shop where mobility scooters are available for hire. Plainmoor football ground is about half a kilometre from Babbacombe. In short, there is something for everyone!

Lovely cottage
Lovely cottage. Had everything we needed. Good location near shops, pubs, cafes, beaches and coastal path. Walkable to model village and Kents Cavern. Easy bus to Torquay and Paignton. Off road parking space is a godsend. Our third time here and plan to return.

Everything you could want for a great family holiday.
This is a wonderful property with everything you could possibly need for a great holiday. Our whole family had a lovely stay and Tessa is a fantastic, thoughtful and helpful host. The cottage is spacious, comfortable and perfectly positioned just off the downs and close to all amenities of Babbacombe and St Marychurch. We have stayed before and we will definitely stay again!

perfect property, perfect location
Such a lovely property, the pictures on here don't do it justice, the living room is large with more seating than shown in the photos which was great. The property also has a utility area and downstairs toilet. It might be helpful to have some better photos of these areas on the listing. We found all that we needed and more for our stay, Tessa has thought of everything and contact with her before and during our stay was easy and useful. The location was perfect with lots to do on the doorstep or just a short drive or bus ride away. Would happily stay here again.

Lovely family holiday!
This was the perfect home-from-home for our family holiday. We wanted more space than we would get in a hotel, which this cottage provided and the hosts really thought of everything to make the stay easy and comfortable. I would absolutely recommend this property!

About the host

I am a retired head teacher with a passion for walking in Devon. This is a beautiful county and I am constantly amazed at its beauty: picturesque villages, stunning coastal scenery and the raw, unspoilt drama of Dartmoor and Exmoor: Heaven!
I grew up and spent my first half century in the lovely cathedral city of Lincoln, but rather than head for a home in another cathedral city, we were drawn to the English Riviera where we have lived now for over 20 years. Husband Bev is a retired Chartered Builder who is great at helping me maintain things in good order!

Why they chose this property

It has a great feel to it. I only buy houses I could happily live in myself. This one spoke to me immediately. The main bedroom is really a lovely room, quite romantic I feel!
I like the garden and you cannot sit there without the locals opening up a conversation. I also enjoy the family of sparrows who love it too.

What makes this property unique

It is a very pretty terrace of cottages. I think the location is brilliant as there is something for everyone. The Cary Arms down the hill (it's very steep!) is a gem and early morning you may find a seal looking for a handout from the fishermen. The walking around the coast path is fantastic but you are close to the bustling Torquay Harbour. There really is lots to do: grab a ferry to Brixham or better still, go in the evening and watch the trawlers bring in the catch before you eat the best fish and chips ever at Rockfish. Actually if you are feeling lazy just buy them round the corner at Hanburys and enjoy in front of the telly at the cottage!
Our own family love to come down from London and stay in the cottage and it is maintained as a welcoming place to stay for them all.
