About the property

Thatched cottage sleeps 4 with fabulous walk/cycling just yards from the door

Nestled in a tranquil backwater, Little Haven is a delightful 17th Century, Grade II listed thatched cottage, refurbished to an exacting standard, cosy and full of charm and character.

Situated between Minehead sea front and Dunster, the old village quarter of Alcombe lies at the foot of the Exmoor National Park and within walking distance of all local amenities. It’s a great base for visiting this wonderful, picturesque area with so many places to see and things to do.

Originally part of the Dunster Estate, Little Haven has witnessed many historic events since it was built over 300 years ago.

We bought the cottage in 2015. Whilst promising ourselves not to buy a thatched or listed building we are now the proud owners of this thatched and listed building and we have thoroughly enjoyed updating and refurbishing it.

The sitting room and dining area is open plan with a large fireplace and gas stove. The adjacent kitchen is modern and well equipped with all the mod cons. An attractive stairwell and landing takes you to the two bedrooms each with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams. They are individually furnished with king size beds with one of the rooms having an additional vanity unit. There is a downstairs bathroom with power shower over bath.

Egyptian cotton bed linen, towels, electricity and gas are included in the rental price.

Entertainment facilities include free WIFI; smart TV with freeview and catch up; DVD & CD player. There is a good selection of DVD’s, CD’s, games and books. There is also two USB charger points in kitchen.

Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome (£25 supplement) on the understanding they do not go upstairs, on the furniture or are left unattended. Dog beds are provided on request (no additional charge). There are also plenty of towels and shampoo if needed after a romp in the woods!

With views towards the wooded hillside, the pleasant fully enclosed south facing garden has both a lower patio accessed off the kitchen and an upper patio with summer house and gas BBQ. They are ideal for al fresco dining or an early evening gin & tonic! There is a shed for secure bike storage (bring your own lock) and we can’t forget to mention the warm outside tap put in especially for our four legged visitors – our two just wouldn’t accept anything less!

A plethora of glorious walks start within a few yards of the cottage. These can be short walks or the start of a day’s hike; the list of routes seems endless and would suit all levels of fitness. The mountain or road biker will not be disappointed either as there some cracking rides to be had but just be prepared for hills – for the very brave try Porlock Hill at 20% or the gentler Toll road (our favorite at an average 6%).

There are beaches within a short distance including Minehead with a large expanse of sand and great for children. It’s dog friendly between the end of September to beginning of May, whilst Dunster beach is smaller and part pebbly but dog friendly all year round. Slightly further afield (about 45 mins drive) is the award winning and stunning Woolacombe beach that has a huge expanse of sand and is dog friendly towards the north side all year round. Adjacent to Woolacombe is Croyde beach, well known for its surf and dog friendly between end of September and beginning of May.

The area caters for numerous sports including: sailing and canoeing (try Wimbleball lake); golfing at nearby Minehead which is a classic links course or try Saunton Sands (about 45 mins away) another popular challenging links course; numerous riding stables with direct access to moorland; course and river fishing; clay and game shooting opportunities.

About Annie & John Crossley

After spending most of our free time in this beautiful part of the country, where we indulged our love of cycling and walking our two Labradors, we now live here permanently after moving from Bristol a couple of years ago. We live a couple of miles away, just over the hill from Little Haven and we will be on hand to ensure you have a happy and comfortable stay and would be very pleased to advise on any local walks, cycling and other activities either accompanied or unaccompanied.

A lovely cottage, very comfortable, well equipped and beautifully furnished.

  • 5 of 5

A great location for exploring Exmoor and the coast. Easy dog walking to Dunster Castle and local amenities (ie the pub!) The cottage is comfortable and cosy and really has everything you need. Kitchen is well equipped too and the garden is well kept, safe and secure for dogs.

We and Jasper, our German Pointer, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Little Haven and would certainly return for another holiday.

Simply the best cottage in the Exmoors.

  • 5 of 5

Little Haven is simply the best. On arrival the cottage was as clean as a new pin. The welcome pack was second to none including new top quality herbs, sauces, coffee, tea, milk, dishwasher tabs etc etc. All the lights had been checked and the kitchen appliances worked well. A lovely greeting from both the owners and the next door neighbour made it a perfect introduction. Walking distance to buses and local amenities make the location ideal alongside off road parking. Having stayed in top specked cottages for many years, Little Haven is the best we have found in the Exmoors and arguably in the UK. The owners should be proud of their achievements and we will be returning regularly in the future.

Absolutely Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We felt instantly at home in this wonderfully restored cottage. It has all the home comforts but retains its cosy cottage appeal. Everything is spotlessly clean and we were welcomed with flowers, doggie treats and a delicious cake. The cottage is a perfect base for exploring Exmoor and for the nearby North Devon coast, with or without a dog or two. We highly recommend it, so much so that we have booked to return next year for longer.

Annie shows how to do it.

  • 5 of 5

Stepping into this little cottage you immediately know that the owners love it and want to show it at its best. It is charming, tastefully furnished, spotlessly clean and equipped to a high standard. There are nice touches, like tissues in every room, and the many extras in the kitchen are a real bonus.

There were flowers and a delicious cake to welcome us and we were soon cosy and comfortable and replete.

We had an excellent short break which we wished had been longer so we’ll have to return.

(The only niggle for us older folk was trekking down to the bathroom in the night. Sad!)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your brilliant review .... That is the trouble with these old wonky cottages .. could have been worse though Martin the old shed in the garden was once the toilet!! John is an Engineer and when we renovated it I banned the spirit level ....we kept saying ... its a cottage!!!!

Little Haven was Heaven

  • 5 of 5

Little Haven was indeed a haven of paradise. The cottage was cosy, warm and inviting with every little touch accounted for. The decor was very in keeping with the period of the cottage, but modern. The furniture and amenities were all high quality and comfy; brilliant to relax on at the end of a long days walking. The cottage was spotless. The bedrooms were pretty and comfortable with plenty of space and as cosy or airy as you wanted them to be. The garden was gorgeous and kept in tiptop condition; wonderful to relax in on a warm day. We did not try the BBQ, but it looked splendid tucked away in a pretty area of the garden. Great for a summer's evening.

We found the location absolutely ideal. Near to supermarkets, pubs and the local chippy (which we sampled and all good); near to the coast and tea-rooms and genteel shops and a fabulous steam railway, but for us the absolute icing on the cake was the choice of so many walks just outside the door, or if we ventured a little further wonderful walks on Exmoor and into Devon. So you could have a great day's walking in the wilderness, find a tearoom and eat scrumptious cakes as well as wander around Lynmouth, Dunster and pretty villages such as Selworthy.

We enjoyed homemade biscuits at the cottage, sweets and a cupboard full of helpful provisions, such as tea, coffee, sugar, spices etc. Even the dogs had homemade biscuits and a warm outside shower. Cannot fault our stay one bit - the sun was even out for most of our holiday. We also loved peace perfect peace and a starry sky at night. The whole week was superb. Thank you.
