About this property

The Karoline: Old World Charm In A 2 Bedroom 2 Bath Beauty By The Charles Bridge

This newly renovated, fully-equipped 2-bed and 2-bath apartment with a living room able to be converted into a bedroom on the 1st floor(2nd floor US) of a historical neo-gothic building just around the corner from the Charles Bridge is for up to 8 guests, and at the same time caters to a smaller, more demanding group or family that wants to have Old World style but in a modern, functioning flat. There are three connecting rooms: the master bedroom with king-size bed(180 cm wide), the living room/sitting room with fireplace(bio-ethynol means real flames but no smoke), cable TV, and a large pull-out sofa, and then the large bedroom with two king-size beds. These rooms all have their own entry/exit doors, so privacy is not a problem. The large master bathroom has a tub/shower, toilet, his and her vanity sinks, and a washer and dryer concealed behind a decorative side panel. The second smaller bath if also fully equipped, with a small sink, shower, and toilet, and both have heated floors. Complementary WiFi works throughout the flat. The fully-equipped kitchen is perfect for making large meals, or even just for a coffee and small breakfast in the morning. Iron and ironing board, all towels and washcloths, and extra bedding are of course provided. Smoking is not permitted in the flat, but we have a small balcony which is perfect for that.
We think that you will appreciate the level of detail that Mark & Mirka put into the flat, from the choice of linens for the beds and selection of furnishings (we have two art nouveau chairs in the kitchen) to the extensive restoration of the ceiling décor and the matching chandeliers. We have really focused on trying to preserve and enhance as many elements from the original construction as possible.

Trip to Prague
The Karoline accommodation could not have been more perfect for a long weekend in Prague for myself and two friends! In easy walking distance to all the main sites and a good selection of local restaurants and bars. The accommodation was clean, the kitchen was well equipped and the beds comfy! On arrival we were met by a friendly Klara who was a font of knowledge about the area and gave us good practical suggestions to make sure our trip was enjoyable. It was our first time in Prague and I am sure it will not be our last, a fascinating, unique city with friendly people and lots to see.

excellent
I stayed in Mark's flat for four nights with my elderly mother and my sister and brother. The flat was clean and as nicely presented as in the photographs. Although we did not get to meet Mark, he provided us with some welcome provisions on our arrival and we got a tour of the premises from his colleague as well as answers to all our questions. The beds were really comfortable and the flat was really nice to chill in together when we were not out. The location could not have been better - a few minutes walk to most of the sites. And you must try the vegetarian restaurant across the road - even meat eaters could not fault it! Mark arranged our pick up and drop off from and to the airport which saved a lot of hassle and best of all - he provided us with a dvd player so my mum could watch some of her films when she was tired. Everything was fabulous and you really should give this flat a try. Thanks Mark - just sorry we didn't get to meet you. Parul, England

very convenient location and beautiful property
The interior of the apartment is beautiful with exceptionally good finishing touches. It is very comfortable and homely and everywhere in Prague is within walking distance. It is spotlessly clean, tidy and very well equipped. There were thoughtful touches when we arrived, essentials like bread, milk, cheese and ham so we could have breakfast the next day without having to find a shop. Even a bottle of wine. There are countless good quality eating establishments nearby. Our favourite was the Italian boat restaurant at the next bridge along from Charles Bridge, but we also found a lovely pavement restaurant nearby that we used the most. Off the beaten track is sometimes better than the main squares. The weather was very hot during our stay which meant that we needed to have the windows open at night. There are many bars and clubs in Karoliny Svetle and because of this there was a continual stream of noisy people going past the flat right until the early hours of the next day. We were so tired from sightseeing that on most nights this did not keep us awake, but sometimes it did. If the windows were shut you could hear nothing. I only mention this as I have been asked to be honest and I am usually the first to be disturbed by extraneous noise. Yes, it was disturbing but it would not put me off returning or recommending the apartment. We were also grateful to Mark for arranging very efficient airport transfers for us. All four of us agree that this was the best holiday experience we have had. The total package; a comfortable apartment and the beauty of Prague. Mark should be very proud of the hard work he has lavished on the renovation of the apartment.

Feel at home in art nouveau Prague
As a start, we can only highly recommend the Karoline. The description and pictures on the website cannot do justice to the love with whom this lovely apartment was restored. We arrived quite late on a friday evening but still we had a very warm welcome, lots of information and you immediately felt at ease. Close to the city center, in sync with the art nouveau atmosphere with the city, we really enjoyed our stay. It would do injustice to Mark and Mirka to consider them as hosts, as they really became friends. their suggestions for diners, drinks, and so on, were spot on. The Red Pif restaurant they suggested was a real hit we went several times to (highly recommended too ;-) ). So whenever we go back to Prague, we'll contact Mark and Mirka...

About the host

Host profile image
Mark Grein is originally from the U.S., but on a chance trip to Europe back in the nineties, he was enchanted by the magical allure of Prague and decided to set up shop here, right in the middle of central Europe not long after the Velvet Revolution. He and his wife Mirka are filmmakers, but decided to try their hand at renovation when they bought this beauty in the heart of the Old Town last year. They did much of the renovation work themselves, especially in restoring the original ceiling stucco decoration, spending many hours up on a ladder covered in wet plaster and paint, and with Mirka handmaking much of the decor, like the floral patterns on the fireplace mantle and cabinets.

Why they chose this property

We knew we had something special when we first set eyes on this diamond-in-the-rough. All of the doors in this residential building have wooden entrance doors or portals that are decorative pieces unto themselves. One inside the flat, we saw that the elaborate but faded ceiling decorations were just screaming to be restored, and the original owner had left many of the original details in this old place, such as doors, door handles, parquet floors, windows(including original glass in some of the windows-- look closely and you'll see the tell-tale 'waviness' in some of the panes). The layout was perfect--- three connected rooms, but all with their own entrances/exits, a large and separate kitchen, along with a small balcony. Located on the 1st floor of a neo-gothic buliding just around the corner from the famous Charles Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, but on a side pedestrian street, it just felt like the right place. We think you'll agree :)

What makes this property unique

As with all properties, 'genus loci' is the most important thing, and this flat has got it in large amounts. It is the perfect place to begin and end a walking tour of the beautiful city, and the quaint street has many great cafes, fantastic wine bars and restaurants, and even though it's close to the famous bridge, it's managed to hang to a lot of its local character.
