Why Mary O'Connor chose Ditiki Mani

I fell in love with this property because of its superb location. It has stunning west- facing views of the Messinian Bay to the front of the property and views of the Taygetos mountains to the rear

.I have always loved Kalamata & the surrounding area. I first came here on holiday to escape Athens and instantly fell in love with it; the warmth of the people, the laid back lifestyle the fresh produce,its olives, still painstakingly harvested by hand.Known all over the world.

Its also a great place to base yourself when touring around as its right in the centre of 2 peninsulas; Mani & Messini.

There are endless excursions to go on and one of the best places to start is the scenic, historical, Mani Peninsula; "A big rock in the sea". This is the region that inspired writer and philosopher Nikos Kazanantzakis to write Zorba the Greek. It was also the home of Patrick Leigh Fermor, British author, scholar and soldier.

The Messini peninsula is beautiful too & it has lots of history. Well worth a visit are the picturesque

seaside towns of Koroni & Methoni with their fortresses. These towns were referred to as "the eyes of Venice" during Venitian rule.

Other places of interest include Pylos, Finikounda, Ancient Messini, Nestors Palace. This is so much to see and do & most importantly, to be inspired by.

What makes this apartment unique

The location of the property will take your breath away. Its also a great base for exploring the area.

Please note that will need a car.

.The comfort of the villa and the feeling of being in & experiencing an authentic Greek home is important to a lot of our visitors, as the villa was custom made to live in and never for commercial purposes.

Wonderful views from this lovely apartment

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is very comfortable and well equipped. The views across Kalamata, by day and by night, are amazing. To get those views, you are high up and can't just pop out to the local Taverna or supermarket, if you fancy! We found the entrance to the property challenging on day 1, but soon realised it was best to turn around above the villa and then drive in on a right turn; also best to reverse out! A car is essential (unless you just want to lounge around and read). The area is wonderful and we visited most of the ancient sites in the Peloponnese, finding plenty of entertainment on the Greek roads! Our hosts were available if required but unobtrusive, and offered good advice about our holiday plans. An excellent venue!

Propre spacieux et bien organisé, l'appartement très lumineux, offre une magnifique vue sur la mer

  • 5 of 5

A recommander.

Our villa is situated 5 km from Kalamata , just outside a picturesque, historical, village overlooking the Messinian Bay in the Peloponnese.

It is one of the most amazingly beautiful and unspoilt places in Greece.

In fact the Peloponnese is technically an island, but it is connected to the main land through the Corinth Canal. This means it has all the advantages of an island but none of the disadvantages, i.e. high property values, lack of space, water considerations, seasonality, heavy reliance on tourism, etc.

The Peloponnese played a very important role in Greek history in ancient times, in the Greek war of Independence (1821), as well as in modern times.

The Peloponnese possesses some of the most exquisite sights in Greece such as:

the «grotto of Dyros»; «the byzantinic town of Mystras»; «the Medieval town of Monemvasia»;

«ancient Olympia», where the Olympic games first took place in the ancient world;

«ancient Epidaurus» with its magnificent theater, a miracle of the ancient world, still very active during the summer season, hosting many famous artists from all over the world;

«picturesque Gythion» with its breathtaking scenery; «pretty Kyparissia».

“The eye of Venice”, Koroni, and its medieval castle, as well as the whole peninsula Petalidi -Koroni-Finikounda-Methoni-Pylos, (Messinian County) is an area that should not be missed.

The rugged mountain peninsula called «the Mani» is another very special area of Peloponnese in many ways;

Historically it was never truly conquered by the Turks; the architecture of its stone-houses and «tower-houses», (erected due to feuds between opposing clans, and in order to keep invaders out), are unique and protected by the Ministry of Culture.

The Mani has a way of casting its spell on people!

Our areas numerous, superb beaches, some of which are kms long, have been awarded blue flags due to the highest standard of bathing quality water.

They are crystal clear, absolutely safe, and rich in marine life, which makes them ideal for sunbathing, swimming, diving, scuba diving, sailing, water-skiing etc.

There is everything for the enthusiast along its varied and fascinating coastlines.

Another great feature of the Peloponnese and not that well known is its diverse landscape.

The Peloponnese is not barren like most of the islands; on the contrary it has lush vegetation with an enormous variety of plants, trees, wild flowers and wild life such as the Mediterranean chameleon, and an array of birds, butterflies and insects.

One of the least known features of the Peloponnese, are its impressive mountains and deep gorges, caves, once the dwelling place of nymphs and lined with stalactites and stalagmites, all of which lend themselves to climbing, hiking, walking, paragliding etc.

In fact approx. 1 ½ hours away from Kalamata there are ski resorts during winter.

The Capital of the Messinian Peloponnes is Kalamata, with 60.000 inhabitants (in Kalamata and surrounding area), a small town with all the facilities and infrastructure of a city, but without the disadvantages of a big city.

It comprises a comprehensive variety of local and international retail and business outlets, theatres, cinemas, a cultural centre with art gallery and library. There are music, dancing and art schools, churches, hospitals, cafès, restaurants, a swimming pool, a public stadium, gyms and exercise centres, ski resorts within reasonable distance, and life both during summer and winter.

Another attraction is the famous castle of Kalamata that hosts some of the most exquisite dance performances and happenings with renowned artists from all over the world during summer months.

For winter holidays the Peloponnese is to be preferred over the islands and many other areas, many of which "close down" in the low season and are generally inacessable.

Easy Jet flies from London Gatwick to Athens and

there is a brand new motorway connecting Athens with Kalamata.

You can pick up a hire-car & drive down to kalamata in Approx 2,5 hours.

The convenience of transportation is a major consideration, especially during winter time, and Kalamata, is the hub of an efficient bus service, (there are buses to and from Athens at hourly regular intervals), the express buses take 3 hours and the normal ones 4 hours.

Moreover, there is an international airport in Kalamata.

From around the beginning of May to the middle of November, there are direct flights from Gatwick to Kalamata with Easy Jet & BA flies to Kalamata from 30 April 2016.

Apart from the UK There are direct flights from a whole host of European cities as well as the USSR.
