About the property

5 bedroom, 3 bathroom village house well set up for families with small children

We are finishing with Owners Direct in April. The rates on here are very incomplete. Please contact us New Forest Escapes for more info. We can't put a web link here, you'll have to Google us. Thanks

Stay here and you’ll find a quirky family cottage with plenty of eccentric tweaks. Right in the village of East End, and right next to a rather smart gastro pub, the cottage has creative (and enclosed) gardens for kids and families to play together in. The kitchen has clouds and fairy lights, there a toys a plenty, rooms specifically designed for grannies and a gypsy caravan in the garden from which small children can hold tea parties. There is a marshmallow brazier for kids to use – or take to the beach. Two cots and highchairs are available.

Older family members also well catered for. There are only 2 steps downstairs. There are very good viewing options of grand-children in the garden. Dogs allowed.

Our most successful groups are…families with grannies and small children in tow. There is space for people who need quiet to escape in The Shed and the garden is enclosed to let kids play. The pub next door is superb for food.

Special days out and celebrations - Pack a picnic and walk down to Tanners Lane Beach – a 1km flat-ish walk down a quiet lane. Set up for the day and explore, Swallows and Amazons style along the foreshore. You can swim from here too when tides are gentle. Lymington has fantastic Saturday foodie markets for picnics.

We can arrange storytellers, chefs, babysitters for you – please just ask.

About Rachel Parsons New Forest Escapes

We are New Forest Escapes. A tight team of working mums who multi-task like hell and get a lot done when our kids (some big and some small) don’t need us.

Between us we’ve travelled much of the world, feeding our addiction for adventure and our itch for interesting experiences. Rachel, who steers the helm of the good ship NFE, used to be a travel writer and has spent most of her life working in hospitality of some kind or another.

Rachel started to rent our Ploughmans Cottage in the New Forest in 2012. Twenty months later it was noted in an article in the Travel Section of The Times as number 2 in ‘Best castles, cottages and cabins’ in England. Despite the disruption in the current travel market the hospitality business continues to grow and consolidate and we have several new and lovely properties to rent through New Forest Escapes.

Our house owners are a well-travelled cosmopolitan bunch. We’re very lucky to have them and be able to invite guests, the world over, to visit and stay at their places.

Our team include Jan Caldwell – our lady-on-the-ground in the New Forest and she juggles many balls in the air keeping everything hunky-dory. Abi Baird, who is working with us to bring her excellent skills of local knowledge, detail and observation to book people in. And also, super-savvy local Gabriel Clarke, who once ran Annabel’s and a private yacht crew-finding business, has come aboard to help grow the broader business to unique new places and move and shake to get our other batty projects off the ground.

Why Rachel Parsons New Forest Escapes chose Lymington

Over 50% of our guests come to celebrate big family birthdays, 70ths, 80ths etc. Or they are two or three families relaxing together. THe house is specifically set up for families with small children and older members coming together.

This is what Sawdays say about us.

“Gypsy caravan in the garden, sofas by the wood-burner, a fun ‘shed’ for glampers, and fab food from the pub next door…

A perfect spot in a tiny village on the edge of the New Forest, a cycle ride from bird hides and beach, a sail’s throw from Lymington – and paradise for children. The laid-back red-brick cottage sits alongside a posh shed for glampers with sofa, kitchenette, wood-burner and a wonderful antique four-poster bed; a hot outdoor shower is on its way. In the house, the kitchen/dining area is the hub with a cool American fridge, a table for 8, quirky colourful lighting and a big square window for gorgeous garden views. (A gardener pops by from time to time and the vegetables are all for you; there are hens sometimes, too.) You get two bedrooms on the ground floor (one with an extra bed on a high mezzanine.) The master suite is under the eaves, flooded with light. Bathrooms are fab, there are stacks of toys and games, and a big well-loved blue sofa squeezed around a wood-burner and TV. Outside: a miniature Gypsy caravan with giant teacups for little ones, grass for games, a terrace for barbecues, stabling for your horse. Just remember that children bring their parents here, not the other way around. Lovely!”

About the cottage

Inside is colourful, eccentric, home-from-home and designed for easy-living. This also goes for our ‘Shed’ with its four-poster bed across the garden. We are especially set up for families with children under 5 and welcome dogs too.

The kitchen gets all the morning sun, great for lazy, sunny breakfasts – wind back the kitchen wall doors and let the birdsong will flood in. Guests wanting quiet from the rest of the group should stay in The Shed.

What makes this cottage unique

The New Forest itself is a hidden gem of a National Park and fantastic to get off the beaten track and out into some ancient and relatively unvisited woodlands. Beaches are the same really - very undervisited.

The pub next door to the cottage is superb and very well supported and known for food.

The lovely garden with all the kiddy designed stuff in it. The access to the forest and beach/sea equally close. The walking and cycling and quiet roads for family biking.

The National Park is very beautiful in it’s foresty interior and along it’s quiet coast. In our blog we have ideas for adventure and birthday walks; tracking unicorns, treasure hunts on the beach, best places to bonfire, bluebell picnic locations etc. Local beaches are very lovely, very quiet and very British (some mud, some sand) and very much home to cows, donkeys and ponies who love to roll in the sandy bits. Its great to track them….Gruffalo-style! Tanners Lane beach, our nearest at 3/4 mile from the cottage, faces the Isle of Wight and its a perfect spot for catching the last rays of evening sun for champagne or a takeaway pizza/curry. You can park at Tanners too. There are no rocks for rock-pooling but there is good mud to scratch about it, a stream and some great trees for climbing. Further afield; Beaulieu Palace, Church and museums, Beaulieu village is lovely too as is the walk from Bucklers Hard there and back), Exbury Gardens, Lymington markets on Saturdays

Stylish, theatrical family cottage for 10-12 + dogs. Enclosed garden. Beach 1km.
average rating of 5.0 based on 1 reviews

Our stay at Ploughman’s Cottage was perfect in every way. It was to celebrate a BIG birthday.

  • 5 of 5

There was plenty of space for 3 couples and 4 children under 7. Granny and Grandpa chose the Shed to sleep in. It was more like a little cottage and had all mod cons and a four poster bed! The children loved visiting us there every morning but not before 7.30!

The garden was paradise for the children and the highlights were the gypsy caravan, collecting apples and seeing donkeys and ponies passing the gate.

This was a memorable holiday that we will all never forget and thank you for the opportunity for us to have had such a wonderful time.

This cottage is 2 parts stretch-limo-living and 2 parts ‘the good life’…1 mile from the beach…

It’s designed to be a relaxing, interesting family base from which to conduct marvellous ‘Swallows and Amazons’ adventures – for the all the family. Many guests celebrate 70th & 80th birthdays and come for family escapes.

Next door the gastro pub The East End Arms is perfect for special family meals, or those who need to escape to ‘walk the dog’ and have an escapist cappuccino or pint with the papers!

In 2014 Ploughmans was no 2 in The Times Travel supplement for Best Family Self-Catering in Castles, Cottages and Cabins article.
