Overview

About the property

Sleeps 4/5, full kitchen with dining, 1 bath, 2 WC, games room, garden, tennis

The Lodge at Chalkway House is the place to stay if you're looking for luxury, homely comforts and a rural setting.

We're nestled in the heart of the Chalke Valley, surrounded by stunning countryside. At the end of a private drive, we have plenty of secure parking just a few steps from the front door. If you like walks, you will be spoilt for choice and there are many you can do straight from the Lodge.

THE KITCHEN

Follow the flagstone path through the garden and enter the Lodge’s spacious ground floor kitchen. There's a useful coatrack and somewhere to put boots and shoes. The kitchen is fully equipped with cooker/hob, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, kettle and all the utensils you might need for a short stay. We provide household basics such as bin bags, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, foil, cling film, salt, pepper and kitchen towel. The granite round table seats five people and there's a comfy armchair.

The kitchen TV has Freeview and we have Wi-Fi to keep you connected through any other device. Please be aware that mobile reception in the valley is very poor.

A washing machine and drier are also available in the main house. Access to the utility room is a stone's throw from The Lodge and a key can be given on request.

On arrival, you'll find some freshly baked bread, butter, a pint of milk, mini jams, teabags, coffee, sugar and a few biscuits.

There's a door through to the enormous Garden Room bedroom with ensuite WC, and games area. The large shared bathroom is upstairs.

Carpeted stairs lead up to...........

THE SPACIOUS FIRST FLOOR

Relax in 350sq ft. of homely and sumptuous living space. The comfy king size bed has a Hungarian goose down duvet and Egyptian cotton sheets.

There are two big sofas and the leather sofa folds out into a very comfortable double sofa bed if you want to share the room.

There's a new flat screen TV with Freeview and a DVD player, and a good selection of books and magazines to flick through.

There are lovely views out over the pretty garden and surrounding fields. You're not overlooked at all, making it very private.

THE BATHROOM

Looking out onto the garden, the bathroom is bright and roomy. There's a full size bath with shower mixer, a heated towel rail and mirror with built-in light.

We provide soft white towels and a few toiletries and if you forget anything we have some basics like toothpaste in the main house. There are thick toweling dressing gowns for you to use during your stay.

LANDING

There is a comfortable single 3 ft divan bed on the landing between the bathroom and bed/sitting room. It doesn't have a window but natural light comes up from downstairs.

THE GARDEN ROOM

Leading off the kitchen on the ground floor is the incredibly spacious Garden Room at 630 square foot. This huge space has two sets of double doors that can be opened onto a private area of lawn, bringing the outdoors in. Half the room is given over to a sleeping area screened off from the rest of the room (the screens can be left up or put to one side to open up the space completely).

There's a lovely view of the garden from the comfortable king size bed and you can enjoy the peace and quiet without being overlooked. There are two big sofas and an ensuite WC (bathroom is upstairs).

The other half of the room is a great games area to keep everyone entertained, especially if it's a bit wet outside. There's a full size Pool table and Table Football.

OUTSIDE SPACE

We have a beautiful garden, which we hope you'll have time to enjoy. The kitchen and the Garden Room lead directly out onto a secluded lawn surrounded by herbaceous borders and a pergola. There's an outdoor table and chairs for you to enjoy a coffee on sunny days.

You're welcome to use our tennis court. There are a couple of racquets and some balls in the Lodge.

The surrounding garden is well fenced for small to medium size dogs.

BRINGING YOUR DOG

Please note we charge £10 extra per day for your dog.

We welcome well-behaved dogs and we have our own friendly Irish Wheaten Terrier. Please speak to us about beforehand if you plan to bring your dog.

Muddy dogs can be cleaned before they enter the Lodge. They must sleep in the kitchen, which is warm and dry.

We have a shower hose over a large butler sink in our utility room if you need to give your dog a proper bath. There is also an outdoor hose. Dog towels are provided.

SHOOTING LODGING

The landscape of Wiltshire’s Chalke valley provides some of the very best shooting action in southern England, including Rushmore in the West, through Ashcombe, Prescombe, Fifield Bavant and Gurston Down to Knighton, Flamstone and Clarendon in the East.

Chalkway House is opposite Prescombe and a two-minute drive to Fifield Bavant and Gurston Down.

The Lodge is all set up for a shooting stay, with places to put wet and muddy clothing and boots, and a lockable gun cupboard.

Why Sophie Bainsfair chose Salisbury

The Lodge at Chalkway House is the perfect location for a rural getaway or romantic weekend.

The main House was built in 2001 and won a Salisbury District award for Best New Build. Up a tree-lined drive surrounded by meadows and well kept landscaped gardens, it's really peaceful with easily accessible walks direct from the property. The award winning local pub, the Horseshoe is a 5 minute walk. Although we're located in the heart of the Chalke Valley we're not far from Stonehenge, Salisbury, Shaftesbury or the New Forest, and there are many gastro pubs in the area.

What makes this cottage unique

Guests are welcome to use the tennis court (a few racquets and balls are there but do bring your own if you prefer). Parking is safe and right outside the lodge.

The lodge was refurbished in August 2015 and has all the comforts you need while on holiday with Hungarian duvets, Egyptian cotton sheets, fluffy dressing gowns and a well equipped kitchen with a stock of household essentials. Bin bags, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, kitchen towel, cling film, tin foil, toilet paper, a few toiletries, and cleaning materials are provided so you only need to bring food supplies.

Fabulous.

Excellent house with great facilities. Sophie has paid great attention to the detail which makes this holiday rental more like a hotel. Lovely comfy beds, super soft cotton bedlinen, and dressing gowns, toiletries, bottles of water by the bedside, under floor heating, plenty of sofas, full size pool table and drop down cinema projector for the kids with a massive DVD library you can borrow from. Extremely dog friendly and a very pretty setting. Sophie was very accommodating as we did not arrive until after 9pm and I got the feeling that nothing was too much trouble. On hand to help if you needed anything but certainly not intrusive. Thank you Sophie. We will definitely book again if we come back to the area - hopefully longer than 2 nights this time.

Simply Perfect

  • 5 of 5

This property is everything you want when staying in the English countryside! It's beyond beautiful, spacious and the location is great too. The home is well appointed with everything you could need; bath products, coffee, spices, local eggs, bread, milk etc. The beds are comfy and the towels are super soft. Sophie and Paul were gracious hosts and provided some fantastic info for restaurants, grocery stores and sights to see not only in the area, but also in London as well, as that was the next leg of our trip. I would come back to Chalkway Lodge in a heartbeat. Thank you Sophie!!!!

Lovely host beautiful cottage in a quiet village

  • 5 of 5

Sophie went above and beyond to make our stay very comfortable and relaxing. I was extremely grateful for her help when my car broke down! The cottage is warm and cosy with a play room the children just adored. Lovely walks around the area with beautiful views and lots of fresh air. Sophie made some lovely bread and left supplies to help settle us in for a lovely weeks break. Fluffy towels silky soft sheets a hot bath and cinema room made the evenings even more relaxing. Highly recommend staying here for a relaxing peaceful break from the city life.

The Lodge at Chalkway House is perfectly located for some of England's finest sights such as Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, Wilton House and many National Trust properties with wonderful gardens. It is the perfect rural retreat but with a lot going on in the area.

There are frequent race meetings at Salisbury and Wincanton, local point to point meets, and professional equestrian cross country events at Wilton House.

The New Forest (walks, Beaulieu Motor Museum, ferries to the Isle of Wight) is a short drive away, and you can be on the fabulous Jurassic coast of Dorset within an hour where stunning beaches, sea views, fossils and beach cafes await. We highly recommend The Hive at Burton Bradstock, just a few miles along the coast from West Quay where the TV series Broadchurch was filmed.

There are many wonderful towns to explore within easy reach - Salisbury, Winchester, Bath, Shaftesbury. Pretty buildings, great shopping, historic sights, and leisure activities such as cinemas, theatres and parks.

The village of Ebbesbourne Wake is home to the now established annual Chalke Valley History Festival at the end of June. The open air gardens of The Larmer Tree at Tollard Royal hosts a four day open air festival in July (past performers include Tom Jones, Van Morrsion and Jules Holland). The Salisbury Arts Festival is at the end of May.

The topography of Wiltshire’s Chalke valley delivers some of the very best shooting action in southern England from September to the January, including Rushmore in the west, through Ashcombe, Prescombe, Fifield Bavant and Gurston Down to Knighton, Flamstone and Clarendon in the east.

Chalkway House is over the road from Prescombe and a two minute drive to Fifield Bavant and Gurston Down.
