About the property

Sleeps 3 (plus baby sharing parents room)

St Matthias Lodge is a unique cottage style property in the heart of Wellswood village.

The property has off road parking and consists of a master bedroom with kingsize bed, wardrobe, drawer storage and wash basin. The second bedroom is ideal for a child or granny and has a single bed, small chest of drawers and clothes hanging space. There is a kitchen/lounge area with breakfast bar, oven, hob, microwave, fridge and washing machine. The lounge is tastefully decorated and has a wood burner for our guests use. A selection of books, dvds and board games are provided, There is freeview TV. And free wifi is available for our guests.

The luxury bathroom has a toilet, basin with shaver point, walk-in rainfall shower and full size bath. The property is fitted with carbon monoxide alarm and smoke detection. There is gas central heating throughout. We are able to provide a high chair and travel cot.

All bed linen, tea towels and bath and beach towels are provided (please do not take our bath towels to the beach).We have decorated and furnished this property to a high standard and hope that you like it.

At the current time the outside of the property is still undergoing renovation, so far we have widened the driveway and added a lovely new decking area with a motorised sun protection awning; plans for winter 2017/18 are to replace the paved area to the side of the property - our letting prices for this season reflect this.

Please take care when driving in or out of the property - we recommend that you reverse into the driveway

The property is no smoking throughout and we do not accept dogs of any type (sorry but it was a hard decision we had to make)

About Ken and Cathy Ricketts

We purchased the property in 2013 and have spent the last two years significantly improving it. Cathy was born in Devon moved away and has returned to roost, she works full time as a safety adviser and has been married to Ken for over 35 years. Ken is Dorset born and works as a self employed Gas fitter. We moved to Torquay in 1984 and both our children were brought up enjoying the local beaches and facilities. Over the years we have made good use of the water and other sports facilities in Torbay and have walked extensively on Dartmoor. We live approximately 4 miles away from the property so whilst being easily accessible we are not in our guest's pocket.

Why Ken and Cathy Ricketts chose Torquay

We were looking for a property in which to invest our time and money and feel in love with St Matthias Lodge which had suffered at the hands of a poor DIYer and was in need of love and attention. We immediately saw its potential with its location close to the lovely shops at Wellswood, within easy walks of Kents Cavern, St Matthias Church and Meadfoot Beach. The bowling green and tennis courts are located in Carey Park in Babbacombe. For the less active a short hop to the end of the road and you can step straight onto the bus and down to the harbour. The choice of restaurants, tea rooms and coffee shops makes Wellswood a great base from which to enjoy your Devon holiday.

Great location, comfy cottage

The cottage was very well set up and so warm and cozy when the weather turned bad. The information book provided by the owners is second to none and should be used as an example for all owners as it answered all questions on operating appliances / equipment / local info and ensured everything was done correctly. The local area has some great eating options. Well done to the owners on providing such a wonderful holiday spot for travelers.

Comfortable and convenient holiday cottage

My husband and I spent a very enjoyable week here. The location in Wellswood was perfect, with easy access to local shops and a frequent bus service down into Torquay or up to Babbacombe and St Marychurch. The car could be left safely on the off road parking space.

The cottage itself was well appointed and good quality. The bed in the main bedroom was extremely comfortable with lovely bedding. The only minor niggles were the lack of a bedside rug on the wood floor, and only one bedside lamp.

The living room was attractively furnished with comfortable seating and a great TV! Again, only a minor issue was the lack of a dining table and chairs, as the breakfast bar only had high stools which weren't ideal for us.

The kitchen was nicely appointed and was fine for us, as we tend not to cook much on holiday(especially with the excellent Kents pub restaurant right next door!).

Bathroom was a real winner, with a great shower and bath, and plenty of towels.

Overall we had a great time and would happily recommend this cottage to couples or families with one child.

Owner's Response: Dear Christine Thank you for your review - we love it when our guests tell us about their experience and we often act on suggestions mentioned. We have a second lamp for the bedroom (it just needs me to get a shade for it - so that will go in shorty). We have had several guests mention the dining room table - this is quite a challenge because a number of our guests have small children so we don't want to clutter the room too much as sometimes the high chair gets used in here - but we are exploring some space saving options. We don't put bedside rugs in the bedroom because of maintaining hygiene hence the one washable mat in front of the wash basin. A lovely little cottage

The cottage was well maintained, kitchen well equipped, great having the washing machine. Bed was super comfortable. Enjoyed having the pub next door for drinks and meals.

The property must be left in a clean and tidy state - we do check for breakages and missing items - if we need to bring our cleaner in following your visit you will be charged £36 as this is what she charges us.

Check in is from 3.30pm on the day of arrival
Check out is by 10.30am on the day of departure
