Kates Cottage is accommodation that was refurbished in a shabby chic style in 2015 with new contemporary kitchen/bathroom 2017. It is an old quaint quarryman's character stone cottage/house built of Portland stone in approx 1810. It has feature exposed stone walls and fireplace and has a very homely feel. The back bedrooms look out to sea and you can gaze out to sea from the the front door. The lounge/dining area is painted in Farrow and Ball Skimming Stone/Elephant's breath with pine panelled walls adding to the cottage's nautical shabby chic theme. As per the photos, the bedrooms are decorated with nautical pictures/ornaments and the bedlinen/curtains also following the nautical theme. The attic blue bedroom is furnished with seasalt "tacking cornish" bed linen inspired by the boats in Falmouth Bay. The other two bedrooms are furnished with luxurious Bedeck "Henley" striped bed linen with matching curtains. Downstairs is an open plan lounge/diner with a natural stone fireplace with woodburner effect electric fire. The Kitchen is fully integrated including washing machine. (no freezer) there is a washing line in the back yard on a pulley system for drying or driers. laundrette a stones throw from the cottage. The back garden is small but enough to sit outside and listen to the sea; is also a suntrap. We have hung plenty of hooks for drying surf/sailing gear along the garden wall. The Kitchen is well equipped with usual kitchen utensils including microwave, cafetiere/teapots. Dualit kettle and toaster. The main front bedroom is the double shown with brass/iron bedstead and pine stripped floors. The middle bedroom has a single day bed also with pine stripped floors. This bedroom leads you to the attic room with a 4 foot double bed (blue one with boats on in pictures) and feature stone wall and a lounge chair to sit in and relax reading a book or just chilling. The attic room is perfect to lie on the bed and listen to the waves lapping Chesil Cove is at the end of the lane and also a tranquil place to relax or look out to sea, seen from two bedroom windows. There is a fabulous beach pub/restaurant a very short walk away, (see short film) that has good food and a perfect place to have a drink and watch the sun set. Kates cottage is staggering distance from the South West Coast Path which is an integral part of Chesil Cove. For sailing enthusiasts the National Sailing Academy is a stroll down the hill and here you will find sailing/surfing schools which frequent the safe waters of Portland harbour. The Olympic sailing events took place here. There is a Kitesurfing/Extreme Sports School next to the Masonic Hall opposite the Sailing Academy which teaches beginners to all levels. So if sailing/surfing is your thing, you will not be much closer than at Kate's cottage. Beachside or harbour side cafe's abound on Portland and Weymouth, and the coast road to Bridport where you can enjoy a drink or lunch whilst looking out across the harbour or the sea from Chesil Cove or the Fleet lagoon. Weymouth harbour is beautiful all year round and retains its old fashioned charm with picturesque painted houses, cobbled streets and fishing boats moored in the harbour. (See photos) You may even catch the lifting bridge going up to let yachts pass through to moor at Weymouth Marina. There are numerous festivals going on all year, notably the seafood festival in July which attracts celebrity Chef's and the Carnival in August. Not forgetting how famous Weymouth is for its fancy dress at New Year! See www.love-weymouth.co.uk for full list of events.

About Mark Hammond

Having trained as a Registered Nurse at Bournemouth University and previously lived in Weymouth and rural Dorset during my student days, I (Virginia) always hankered to return to Dorset one day, Mark who comes from the Forest of Dean where we live, finally gave in to my wish to return to Dorset, hence the purchase of Kates Cottage. We named Kate's Cottage after a marker point on the Isle of Man TT course which brought us together and Mark's daughter is called Kate, so it seemed appropriate. Mark is currently retraining as a gas safe engineer and works P/T as a Porter at Gloucester Hospital. Virginia now works as an Advanced/Emergency Nurse Practitioner mainly in urgent care/MIU's and P/T in a doctor’s surgery.

Why Mark Hammond chose Portland

We not only love Portland, but love Portland stone cottages. Thus Kate's Cottage, a character Quarryman's Portland Stone cottage with sea views fitted the bill,. It is also close to Chesil Cove and the Cove House Inn which are both favourite haunts that you can walk to and enjoy a drink or a meal without having to be concerned with transport. Kate's Cottage is also staggering distance from the South West Coast path which is perfect for walking which we do when we can. There are numerous seafront beach cafes in the area, we love Billy Winters beach cafe and the Chesil beach centre either side of the causeway. There is always either a festival, food event, beach event or something going on in Weymouth and Portland, see the love weymouth website, then click what's on., then click view all events to see what you fancy! The area is always hosting music events and you will find live music abounds in the pubs and clubs on Portland and in Weymouth. There is often a music event around Weymouth harbour in the summer. Weymouth harbour is always bustling and extremely picturesque Portland Marina is also stunning and a beautiful place to relax at the cafes there whilst looking out around the bay. We just love the area and all it offers and really hope you do too.

What makes this cottage unique

Portland has a totally unique beauty unlike anywhere else. it is an integral part of the Jurassic coastline and many fossils are uncovered here. In fact Portland has been chosen to host an Eden type project called Jurassica to showcase this stunning coastline. The locals are friendly, very welcoming and there is a spirit of Portland that you will find no where else, it is reminiscent of days gone by where you can wander around & watch your children play without the hustle and bustle of current times. it is mostly tranquil even in high season and there is that away from everything feel whilst if you wish for excitement and adventure that's on your doorstep too at the numerous pubs/bars/restaurants and music venues in Weymouth. The coastal road en route to Bridport via Portesham, Abbotsbury and Burton Bradstock is a must see; voted in the top ten of one of most scenic coast roads in the world, see our website for photos (coast road to abbotsbury).

View St Catherine's Chapel as you climb the hill the far side of Abbotsbury and stop for a minute or two at the lay by to take in the breathtaking views over the Fleet lagoon/Chesil beach and Portland. Try lunch at the famous Hive beach cafe at Burton Bradstock (stunning sandy beach) and if you are inclined continue on to Lyme Regis (a beautiful town to explore the quaint harbour with harbour front cafes) made famous by the film "French Lieutenant's Woman". Then go fossil hunting on Charmouth beach, the best place in the UK you are likely to find any! Dorset is stunning, there is literally something for everyone whether you want fast pace and action or prefer the quiet slow pace of life you will not be disappointed. Portland is also one of the best places for climbing/sailing/wind & kitesurfing & fishing. We love Weymouth & Portland & hope you do too.You may spend many a time with your heads out of the bedroom windows just looking out to sea or sat on Chesil Cove staggering distance away admiring the sunset. Enjoy!

Charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights at Kate's cottage.

It's a beautiful and charming cottage in a lovely location. The Christmas decorations were a lovely touch, making it feel cosy and festive. Kitchen kitted out with everything we needed. The owners, Mark and Virgina are very helpful, and made contact just before our arrival which is always reassuring when staying somewhere new.

All week breaks are Saturday to Saturday. Price changes therefore go up/down on the Saturday nearest dates listed. Some weeks may show dates for 6 days ending Friday, but are still 7 day breaks ending on the Saturday as pricing can't show 2 different prices on same day. Therefore a week prior to change in price will show Friday as end date even though IS saturday. For short breaks of > 3 days, please ignore additional night rates and ring/mail for price or any bespoke requests if not booking as planned! Also please ignore standard rate which we have set high to stop it defaulting to a lower price if people try to book far in advance. Please call if you are unsure of pricing which is still as per the tariff listed. Kate's Cottage unfortunately doesn't take pets. There is a downstairs double sofa bed and downstairs bathroom should anyone have trouble going up the steep cottage stairs but if preferring to sleep upstairs would not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Due to the steepness of the stairs close to the bedroom exits any toddlers need strict supervision to ensure no accidents falling downstairs. There is a stairgate to help guard against this. The attic bedroom can't take a stairgate as open plan and any toddlers sleeping there must be supervised to ensure safety. Please be mindful of this if have toddlers prone to wandering! Deposits are refundable 6 months or more notice. unless we relet property in which case we will give a full refund less any discounts offered to relet if this is the case. We would do all we can to try to relet. Balance due 30 days prior to holiday check in date. Cancellations after the balance is paid in full is non returnable unless the holiday is relet at short notice which we would endeavour to do. we will refund any monies paid less any discount given to relet the property at short notice. if not relet no monies will be refunded. £50 gas /£50 electric included in price per week extra used payable on exit.
