A fantastic place for a short break
We had a lovely time staying at Braeside, and found the cottage was exactly as the listing stated. The location is just remote enough to feel like you're really in the countryside, but near enough to Wooler that you're able to nip to the shops. The 'Good Life Shop' let us sample lots of local cheeses, and the 'Milk Bar' served the best ice creams for miles around. Not forgetting the delicious sausages we had from the local butcher - all in all a wonderful place to stay. Don't forget to check the fields across from the front of the property for hares in the mornings/evenings, and if you have a good lens on your camera you'll get some cracking photos. We had great help from Paul sorting out some day 1 niggles with the WiFi, and everyone involved has been exceptionally helpful. Thank you for a lovely break away.

Soooo relaxing
What a great place - so quiet and peaceful, in a brilliant location to easily/quickly walk into open hills and moorland or nip to coast. The fire was great and made it extra cosy. The place was well kitted out, including a library of all sorts, including lots of local guide books, leaflets, maps and games/puzzles etc. The hosts were lovely too. Only minor detail the height of low ceiling should be mentioned.

Lovely cottage, great location.
We stayed at Braeside in November 2023. The cottage is easy to find and the private parking space is great. The cottage itself is comfortable, characterful, cosy and warm. Although it's not necessary to keep the cottage warm, if you light the wood burning stove it will get warm indeed. It's well equipped and has everything you need for a short stay. The Wi-Fi is perfectly sufficient for keeping connected and streaming media. We chose Braeside because of its location and the fact that you can access the AONB, and various walks, without having to drive anywhere. Although the cottage doesn't have a dog secure enclosed garden the lane is very quiet and you can walk to open countryside within minutes. Wooler is a very pleasant small town and has a range of independent shops and a large Co-Op store for all your provisions. It's also a good location from which to explore the various attractions in Northumberland. We would certainly stay here again.

About the host

Hosted by Paul and Eileen Lyons

Host profile image
Paul and Eileen Lyons own and manage the cottage and have lived next door since 2010. We enjoy the outdoors and country life, enjoy travelling and are very fond of Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and of walking in Britain and in the Alps. We enjoy meeting people and look forward to welcoming guests. We love this area and like to see people enjoying all that it has to offer. It's good to see weary people, settle in, unwind and recharge their batteries while they are here . Paul also speaks good German and we hope to introduce European guests to the pleasures of Northumberland.

Why they chose this property

We love the tranquil, peaceful location of the cottage and yet it is only a mile from all local amenities and within easy reach of city life at Edinburgh or Newcastle upon Tyne. We first saw and photographed the cottage within a full rainbow, and when a few years later it became for sale, decided to go ahead and buy it. During winter 2014/15 we restored the original inglenook and alcove and fitted a new log burner. During winter 2015/16 we have enlarged the garden a little and extended the stone walling.

What makes this property unique

Relaxing, comfy cottage with splendid views, guests often say it is like a 'Home from Home' and consistently give it a high rating. The location in rural, North Northumberland makes it ideal for exploring the National Park, the sandy beaches, castles and fishing ports of The Heritage Coastline, Alnwick with its castle and gardens, the Beautiful Scottish Borders and The Tyne Valley. Walk from the cottage, locally or into the hills. Potter round the shop's on Wooler's independent High Street, visit local attractions, have a day further afield or simply relax at the cottage which has a huge collection / variety of books, plenty of games and lots of 'Craft Materials' for guests to use......try knitting or crochet or simple collage. We debated long about whether to include WiFi, as some people like to escape the digital world for a while, however after a successful trial in 2017 it is now included. People can choose to switch off if they wish. Do try Doddington's award winning cheeses and ice creams, Craster kippers, or fresh fish from Eyemouth via a mobile van, good quality meat from the local butchers, sweets from the old fashioned sweet shop. Wooler also has several Antique Shops. Enjoy lovely sunsets, chill out by the log fire, have a Drink or a Meal in Wooler or one of the nearby villages. We are in the Northumberland Dark Sky Park and benefit from clear skies without light pollution, so stargaze from the cottage to the awesome skies.
