Overview

About the property

Architecturally-designed country home with luxurious interior.

Here is a stylishly decorated home with original art in each room. All furnishings are of a very high quality and there is every attention to detail. There are covered terraces and a pool for Summer, a log burner and skiing for Winter and fabulous walking and cycling all year round. This is accessible rural France only 30 minutes from the airport. The house is perfect for extended families or two families as there are two distinct sleeping areas. We caution that the pool is not fenced, the indoor staircase is not gated and there is a wood-burner and an outdoor fire, so the house may not be suitable for under-fives.

Mas Darré la Foun (Occitan for 'Behind the Fountain') has four bedrooms: two upstairs (one double, one twin) each with en-suite shower room and dressing area, and two downstairs (one double, one king-size) secluded in their own wing and sharing a large bathroom, separate loo and petit salon for quiet reading.

Upstairs the double bedroom has a huge, arched window framing inviting walks up the country lane. The twin room at the back has a juliet balcony overlooking the pool and village. The downstairs bedrooms each have French doors giving on to the pretty garden and face East for the best of the morning sun.

The bedroom arrangements makes the house ideal for two parties of four, an extended family or for parents to secure some essential holiday space away from their children! Also, this arrangement lends itself to letting out a wing of the house for smaller parties out of season.

The spacious main salon and dining area sit under a lofty beamed ceiling with a semi-open-plan kitchen. This is hand built with granite work surfaces and is set up for serious cooking. There is Rangemaster five-ringed gas stove with twin electric ovens, a Rangemaster cooker hood and double ceramic sink. There is a large dishwasher, extra-wide fridge-freezer and microwave. The crockery is largely fine bone china and more than enough cutlery and glassware is provided. Every pot and pan and utensil you might need are available and in the oak larder cupboard you will find all basic condiments and pantry goods which you are welcome to use.

There is an island with an oak surface matching the eight-seater oak dining table. These complement oak sideboards and oak occasional furniture in the sitting area where sofas and a reading chair and lamp are arranged around the log-burning stove. A SMART TV, Books, DVDs and games are provided for holiday entertainment.

Three sets of French windows give out onto shady terraces offering rattan sofas and a barbeque which also functions as an outdoor fireplace which we designed ourselves and decorated with an iron-work Occitan cross. There is a luxury rattan and glass outdoor dining set for eight.

Down in the summer kitchen a sink and fridge allow for snacks and cold drinks. There is a further dining set here and a shower-room and WC convenient to the 12m x 4m pool. Swim along gazing at patchwork vineyards whilst kites and buzzards circle in high skies. There are four loungers on the poolside in addition to the reclining dining chairs, the sofa and easy chair and the comfortable rattan dining chairs on the upper terrace, so everyone should find a place to read, sun-bathe, play games or just gaze at the lovely garden and views.

The garden is exceptionally pretty with fruit and olive trees, local cypresses, wisteria, honeysuckle, jasmine, lavender and trailing rosemary. Much of the area near the house is paved with travertine stone, extending from the travertine flooring to the whole of the inside living space. Outside this includes the terraces, the path down to the pool and the sunbathing area. There are gravel walks to take a morning turn around the rose garden and a little walled kitchen garden next to the drive.

There is a lawn, or rather a 'lawn' which we are trying to persuade the Mediterranean climate to accept so we can put out our croquet set. A ladies' and gents' bike are provided and there are various pool and garden games. There is also an inflatable kayak which is fantastic for taking on to the lake at Montbel or for more serious river kayaking if you are sufficiently experienced. In the village is a recently-renovated tennis court. We have a guest membership card and tennis racquets and balls for you to use for free.

Mas Darré la Foun was designed for us by a French architect and built by local artisans in 2013. The garden is maintained by Michael who sings to concert standard and plays woodwind. The house and pool are maintained by Barry the Brit from the village who used to work in engineering and motor racing and is a stickler for detail. Everything is ship-shape and Bristol fashion for your stay and no corners cut in quality or what is provided.

It is very much a home which is let out to only a few exclusive parties. Our guests have delighted in the house and receive a splendid welcome. Unfortunately the proximity of the pool to the house and the lack of stairgates or equipment for babies mean that we prefer children who visit to be over five years old.

We provide more information about local services and restaurants when you book. We have also prepared a ‘How to…’ booklet to unlock all the mysteries of how to get there, how to get in, how to operate equipment and emergency contacts. Guests often have special arriving or departure requests and have to co-ordinate holidays with flights to any of five airports within a two-hour drive plus a couple more under two-and-a-half hours. We are happy to accommodate all reasonable requests and are completely flexible about arrival and departure dates out of high season, where the minimum recommended stay is seven days, preferably Saturday-Saturday.

Enjoy the peace and luxury of a holiday at Mas Darré la Foun!

About Clare Guinan

We are a family of four who live in the shadow of York Minster in fabulous North Yorkshire. We also have two boys who have fled the nest and live in London with their gorgeous girlfriends (see the selfie of all of us at the 2015 Toques et Clochers festival in Limoux). Clare works for Citizens Advice and Ian works for a French company. Clare is also a qualified French teacher so you can appreciate the connections which have persuaded us to have our roots in two countries.

Clare Guinan purchased this house in 2012

Why Clare Guinan chose Villelongue-d'Aude

We trawled for four years to find the perfect French property for us to purchase. Naturally we had the ideal of a stone-built farmhouse on the edge of a village with beautiful views and vineyard walks from the door, within walking distance from a shop and restaurant. The reality is that no renovation project gave us everything on our list and we discovered in our many hunting-holidays that if you have a restaurant within walking distance the chances are that in a week we would go to it only once and only then if it was well-recommended. Building our own house in the perfect location was an exciting prospect to get the house just right. Of course it was bonkers to attempt to co-ordinate this from England with both of us working but somehow we managed to do it and the result is a home we are extremely proud of.

Clare had lived in the Loire valley and near Montpellier. We had holidayed in Normandy, Brittany, the Dordogne and in the Vendée. We took the children on an odyssey from St Tropez in the East, westwards through Provence, up into the Cevennes mountains and down through the river gorges to the Aude. When we got back to the Razes, to our little toe-hills to the Pyrenees, we wondered why we had searched for anything better in the whole of the Midi. The Aude region offers every cultural, architectural, culinary and natural attraction we could wish for.

Now we have our house on the edge of a village with beautiful views and walks through the vines. We can walk to the bar (where they do the best chips for miles around - the only item on the food menu!) and we can have some groceries delivered or just pop out for a quick drive to local shops. We tend to have lunch out then graze in the evening with a bottle or two of village wine. The driver-of-the-day does not feel so hard-done-by and many restaurants offer their evening menus at a much cheaper price during the day.

What makes this house unique

Our house reflects the care and attention we have put into choosing its location, designing and building it for modern life and fitting it out to be a luxury hideaway.

Wonderful holiday in a fabulous house!

  • 5 of 5

We have had a wonderful holiday in this fabulous house. It's very comfortably furnished and equipped inside and out, with our every requirement catered for. As keen cooks we were delighted with the kitchen, everything we needed and more, and got lots of use out of the BBQ. The pool area was super and set in a beautiful garden. As the weather was so good we had all our meals outside, taking in the wonderful views. We had several trips into Limoux and Carcassonne and enjoyed some great meals and local wines. Clare was extremely helpful from the day we booked and Barry and Chris just up the road if we needed anything. I'd have no hesitation recommending this house for a most enjoyable holiday and would love to return

Owner's Response: Ahhh, that's so lovely to hear. We look forward so much to our holidays and know our guests do the same, so we try to think of everything we would want and make sure it is all available at Mas Darre la Foun. Good to know you had such a good time. Thank you, Clare

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from our holiday at this beautiful villa. Everything about the villa, the garden and the village was perfect. The villa is spotless, beautifully appointed, very comfortably furnished and equipped with absolutely everything we could possibly have needed. The garden was gorgeous, with amazing, far-reaching views across the village and surrounding vineyards -stunning sunrises. We loved having the pool at our disposal, which was very welcome on the particularly warm days. We stayed at the villa with two of our adult sons and their partners and found that we had the option of spending time together, but could also find a quiet nook to sit and read/ listen to music undisturbed; the villa (and garden)lends itself to this very well. The village itself is very beautiful, we loved hearing the church bells chime on the hour - and again a minute later - the snooze button! There is a tiny bar under the church which opens on Thursday and Friday evenings - very interesting mix of local folk and ex-pats. We had great vegetarian food and live music there on Friday - great for our group - we were made very welcome. The location of the villa is perfect for many days and nights out. We particularly enjoyed Foix - chateau and town - and the drive beyond into the mountains. We caught the start of one leg of the Tour de France leaving Toulouse on Saturday afternoon, very exciting carnival atmosphere. Owner Clare was very accommodating, great, prompt communication, lots of helpful information regarding local activities. The house manager, Barry, visited us a couple of times to ensure that we were happy with everything, and we spotted him early in the mornings maintaining the pool. We also met Barry's wife at the bar in Friday, which was very nice. We would love to stay at the villa again, would definitely recommend, next time, we will factor in a train trip to Narbonne and Barcelona. Thank you for helping us to create happy holiday memories.

Superbe maison , bien équipée et idéalement placée.

Owner's Response: 4/5! We have never got less than a five before, on this or other sites. We work really hard to make sure everything is perfect for our guests and give our best support, so to achieve less than a five is disappointing and in this case frustrating, as the comments are all positive, so we don't understand how we might improve. However we are delighted that J-LM and family had a fine holiday as Mr M was kind enough to let me know via Owners Direct: "Oui nous avons vraiment passé une très bonne semaine dans votre maison entre balades dans la région et farniente au bord de la piscine ! Nous recommanderons l'endroit. We hope to see them back some day.

Our architecturally designed house in the village of Villelongue d’Aude has a 12m pool, extensive shady terracing, four double bedrooms, four bathrooms, a fabulous open and airy living space, a hand-built kitchen, underfloor heating, a wood-burning stove and original art in every room.

Beautiful views all around are a given as the village sits in the Razes, the ‘Tuscany’ of the Aude valley, where settlements sit on little conical hills surrounded by cypress trees. To the North beyond the medieval city of Carcassonne rise the Black Mountains; to the East the Corbieres, wild land of vines and eagles; to the West is the Ariège where goats, cows and sheep graze; to the South the gorges of the river Aude splash down through picturesque market towns to the Spanish borderlands and the rising Pyrenees.

This is Cathar country where castles cling to rocks and ghosts of intellectual heretics take to arms. The warm Mediterranean is an hour away in one direction and the first ski stations of the Pyrenees an hour away in the other. Toulouse is a similar distance if you fancy some Big City culture.

Much closer beckon the lively town of Limoux with its Summer concerts and Winter carnivals; the lake of Montbel for paddling our kayak into the sunset, and endless pathways for strolling through vineyards, oak forests and fields of giant sunflowers. Villelongue itself boasts a bar two nights per week all year and extra festivals and music events in the Summer. The nearest boulangerie is an energetic bike ride up a hill with a view to reward, or 6km in the car. All services and restaurants are within 9km.

Ten reasons to stay at Mas Darré la Foun between October and April:

1. Parties of four or less attract special rates.

2. Walking and cycling are more comfortable out of the Summer heat.

3. Skiing in the nearby Pyrenees is easily accessible and a joy.

4. Limoux welcomes its winter carnival between Christmas and Easter.

5. Just before Easter there is the Toques et Clochers, festival of wine, art, food and music.

6. The wood-burner comes into its own and the underfloor heating adds luxury.

7. The markets are more ‘French’ out of high season.

8. Much local produce is harvested in Autumn, which feels like another Spring.

9. You are never far away from a warm, sunny day and coffee in the fresh air.

10. You are never far away from a crisp, cold day and a good stomp.

Villages and Towns

Alaigne 6km. Excellent new boulangerie and ‘essentials’ shop in this ‘circulade’ village. In Spring 2016 it seems to be undergoing some changes. Let's hope its closure will be temporary! Cafe/bar with rousing events and a good mix of French and non-French.

Belveze du Razes 9km Butcher, baker and probably candlestick maker. Belveze is one of those places where apochryphal stories are told of the number of Brits living there – you hear all sorts of improbable percentages. Truth is I have only once bumped into another Brit and his French was impeccable so who cares! Very well-served decent sized village with fabulous views en route.

Limoux 11km Gutsy market town (Fri and in the Summer, Tues eves too) on the river Aude with good restaurants, a big Leclerc and a proper amount of business and industry (mainly the incomparable Blanquette production) to make this a real place, not a tourist pastiche. Very heavy on music events all Summer and the curious ancient rites of the fécos in Winter.

Alet-les-Bains 20km Lovely village in a gorgeous setting on the Aude. Here’s where to start kayaking back down to Limoux. Not for the faint-hearted and expect to get wet but be exhilarated by the end. Also for tree-top adventures and not forgetting the casino!

Mirepoix 24km Decent and very attractive town with a definitive market and loads of not-bad restaurants. More touristy but you can see why. The market is on a Monday but if you visit on other days you get to appreciate the architecture better.

Carcassonne 35km A UNESCO site, this is an extensive and well-restored medieval fortified settlement. The ‘new’ city - ‘La Bastide’ - is ‘only’ about 250 years old and is great to walk around its ‘grid’ roads. Up at the top is the station and the canal locks and the Bistro du Terminus, all of which are worth a visit.
