About Barry or Helen

We are Mum Dad and four kids that love the outdoor life, all born in England. Coniston has been our second home for a long time. Having camped, caravanned and rented accommodation in the lakes for years we decided to purchase The White House. After a two year renovation completed in Spring 2016 we want others to enjoy the property village and lakes as we do.

No matter whatever is the season the lake district and especially Coniston, is a special place. We love seeing winter snow on the Old Man while sitting in the lounge in front of the log fire with a mug of hot chocolate. Similarly spending long summer days on the balcony drinking homemade lemonade reading a book and sometimes drinking something a little stronger as the children play in the garden. As the day draws to an end, cooking local produce on the barbeque is something we love to do. The stars on a clear warm summer night the rear balcony is not to be missed.

Barry or Helen purchased this house in 2012

Why Barry or Helen chose Coniston

The white house is unique in that no properties in the village are able to offer the level of luxury in all areas to accommodate 12 persons in comfort. Although the property is located within village the views are outstanding.

Staying at the White House is similar to staying in a boutique hotel with all the facilities of home. Within two minutes walking distance of all village facilities it's great to park up and not drive.

Walks from the door step, great village amenities and facilities all within 200mts and a luxury property with fantastic views and facilities that all will enjoy.

What makes this house unique

The quality of accommodation, location to amenities and Lakeland village setting make the property extra special for large families and friends who have discerning taste and are looking for accommodation that offers the true wow factor and will exceed their expectations.

A lovely holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the White House during Easter to celebrate my sisters 50yh birthday.

The owner, Barry, was extremely helpful and we appreciated the gifts of Easter Eggs!

The house is very comfortable and well equipped. The kitchen is like being at home with everything you could need. That said the local restaurants are also very nice so we ate out for dinner. All shops and restaurants are conveniently located a short walk away.

The views are lovely. We would hope to return again!

A beautiful house in a glorious setting

  • 5 of 5

A long weekend to celebrate a special birthday with family 10 adults and 2 children. The property is wonderful and the owner Barry was there to meet us to explain how everything worked and show us around the property, he also told us all about the surrounding area. There is everything you need from towels in all the bathrooms to a very well stocked kitchen. Excellent place to stay we all agreed we would like to go back again, sooner rather than later.

The property is located in the village of Coniston, central within the Lake District National Park. The area is surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountains, valleys and diverse countryside.

From the doorstep you have access to great walks to suit all abilities and more details can be found within the guest information guide within the property.

The Lake District is one massive adventure park and we suggest the following as great days out:

A visit to Tarn Hows - a real must which can be walked to from the front of the house whatever the season whatever the weather, or drive to the National Trust car park and walk around the tarn.

For the more adventurous a walk up the Old Man of Coniston is a must. It's 2634 feet (803m) high so be sure to be prepared. Look out for evidence of the rich slating history particularly on the north east slopes.

For a relaxing day take a trip to the lake about a 10 to 15 minute walk and buy an ice cream at the Bluebird Café or take a trip on the Steam Yatch "Gondola", first launched in 1859 and one of the inspirations for Captain Flints houseboat in Arthur Ransome's book "Swallows and Amazons".

From the house you are able to see Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin. Ruskin was the son of a successful sherry merchant. He campaigned for the welfare state and inspired the founders of the National Health Service, the information of public Libraries, the National Trust and other institutions found in modern society. The house and beautiful gardens contain many of his original possessions. He is buried in the churchyard in the village.

In more recent times Coniston was made famous by Donald Campbell and his Bluebird K7 record attempt in 1967. Campbell attempted to break the 300mph but was killed on the return leg of the attempt. His grave is found in the village over the wall at the rear of the property.

Further afield but not too far away trips to William Wordsworth's home in Grasmere, Beatrix Potter's home Hill Top, Wray castle with its mock Gothic castle over looking Windermere. Zeffirelli's cinema in Ambleside and the many gift shops, cafes and shops in the surrounding villages are all worth exploring.
