About Rachel Slater

Keith, a Company Director and Rachel, a former Deputy Chief Executive/Director of Nursing in an acute hospital. We have 4 grown-up children and a new grandchild. Rachel loves all animals, especially dogs, horses and elephants! Crane Hill Farmhouse is situated on a small farm with 200 sheep, 25 Dexter cows (including 8 calves) 2 horses, a Mummy donkey with her little baby and 4 dogs.

We purchased Crane Hill Farmhouse recently and spent 6 months renovating and refurbishing to a very high standard to provide accommodation we would like visitors to enjoy and return to year after year.

Rachel manages the Farmhouse with the assistance of Tom, our youngest son who is skilled in lots of areas to keep the Farmhouse in great shape.

We moved to the Cotswold area approximately 15 years after many years moving around (Keith was in the Royal Navy for 9 years) as it was convenient for jobs, etc but definitely put our roots down here and will not be moving away again.

Rugby fans, we support our local team, Cheltenham Tigers, who Tom plays for, as well as visits to Kingsholm to watch Gloucester Play.

Last year we began proud grandparents to Isaac and look forward to him growing around the farm with space, animals and fresh air

Rachel Slater purchased this farmhouse in 2015

Why Rachel Slater chose Cotswold district

Crane Hill Farmhouse is situated in a fantastic rural location giving access not only to the Cotswolds and all the attractions but further afield to towns and cities - Oxford, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham all within 1 hour drive.

The open plan living accommodation is perfectly suited to large family holidays or groups of friends. All the bedrooms are light, spacious and offer fantastic views.

There is generous private outdoor space for children to play and parking for 4 cars - additional cars may be accommodated by negotiation.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Guests have unique access to the top of Crane Hill - only afforded to guests of the Farmhouse and residents of the Barn.

The views across the valley are breathtaking and constantly changing with the weather and seasons.

There is an abundance of local wildlife including foxes, rabbits, brown hares, a local 'confusion' of guinea fowl, badgers and the occasional deer.

Look up and you will discover a wide range and variety of birds - the buzzards, with their vibrant under-wing markings which appear as two large eyes, nest in the trees up the hill, a family of 'little owl' reside in trees near to the Farmhouse and can be heard most nights as they hunt for food. There are also some local Barn Owls who can be heard ‘twit-to-wooing’ in the evening

We have frequent visitors of other birds of prey including sparrow hawk. It is not unusual to see a Red Kite, distinguished by its deeply forked tail.

We are fortunate to see Spotted Woodpecker and Green Woodpecker. These colourful birds can often be seen on the fence posts ‘knocking’ for beetles.

Lovely stay in this charming cottage

  • 4 of 5

Crane Hill Farmhouse is a lovely cottage in a beautiful setting. We stayed for 4 nights in February and were lucky with the weather. The house is ideally set for walking and its only a short drive to Cheltenham and Gloucester.

The house is spacious and very clean and welcoming. The cake and wine on arrival along with the other little extras were lovely.

I will definitely be recommending to family and friends.

Quiet, comfortable stay with great views

  • 4 of 5

Ideal for a family holiday with 4 bedrooms (with comfortable beds), large living/dining/kitchen area and lovely views of the peaceful hills, animals and sunrise. A gentle walk up the private Crane Hill behind with cattle, sheep and the donkeys was lovely, be prepared for a stiff cold wind on the far side in winter! Enjoyed exploring Tewksbury Abbey on a very quiet day, with its idyllic setting, relaxed coffee shop and playground for the kids close by. Overall, a great experience.

We give this property between 3 and 4 stars, a little disappointing in some areas.

  • 4 of 5

The property was clean, warm and nicely furnished but the owner did not give us any attention on arrival, during our stay or on leaving. Therefore no meeting, this would have made a huge difference. We did struggle with using the microwave, oven and dishwasher despite looking for information. We felt the property did not meet with the description 'luxurious' but it was above average especially the kitchen/family room. The snug room location for bedding was a surprise, all screwed up and with a few dead flies. The location was good and convenient for all that we did and we were grateful for all the information and guidance before arrival, not forgetting the welcome cake and wine. Unsure if we will book this property in the future.

Owner's Response: Dear Colin, I'm sorry you were not totally satisfied with the farmhouse during your recent stay. Regarding your point about not seeing the owner, the approach we take is that the property is yours for the duration of your stay and we try to respect your privacy. Generally we will meet guests at some point as we are always around. This approach has been a clear decision on our part to ensure guests complete privacy is maintained at all times, thus enhancing the enjoyment of our stunning location. Sorry if this did not work for you on this occasion. The Miele dishwasher is brand new and the instructions are in the drawer in the property. The microwave is a standard microwave but we will take on board your comment and we will ensure instructions are available. The bed linen for the sofa bed was put into the box the day of your arrival with the cover put on the duvet and the pillows. In future we will put the bed linen in a vacuum bag. Thank you for your feedback, it is always helpful for future guests.

Very comfortable & beautifully decorated

  • 5 of 5

Our party (two families including 4 adults, 2 children and a baby) have just had a wonderful long weekend at Crane Hill. Spacious, very comfortable, beautifully decorated and well-equipped accommodation. Much higher standard than my own home! The open-plan kitchen/dining/living area was perfect - it has windows on all sides and is lovely and light. Fabulous views of the hills from the windows. Great patio and garden outside. The bedrooms are comfortable and have lovely linen and towels. The "snug" room was thoroughly enjoyed by our 3-year-olds who saw it as their own private living room! Amazing selection of dvds. Easy parking just outside. Handy utility room for cot and boot storage and washing machine. We enjoyed the walk up Crane Hill and the views from the top. Very much hope to return next year! Thank you!

Lovely farmhouse with great views and plenty of space.

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse was really lovely for our stay, we were a family of 3 generations and all had a great time. The house itself is very spacious with a large open plan kitchen/diner/lounge area with a separate 'snug'. All of the bedrooms were a good size too and looked out across lovely views. There is also plenty of space for parking several cars. We visited the nearby Jet Museum as well as having a ride on the steam train locally. Overall, we would definitely recommend Crane Hill Farmhouse.

Amasing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much Rachel for your hospitality. Your farmhouse is a joy to stay in and in a wonderful setting, very homely. There was a few of us staying to celebrate a birthday and a wedding, and the farmhouse accommodated our needs perfectly. We hope to be back.
