About the property

Quiet Cozy Retreat Close To Falmouth, Contemporary Interior, Traditional Cottage

Are you arriving using Newquay Airport for your holiday in Cornwall? Many flights arrive on Sunday, please bare in mind that Sorgente has check-in and check-out on Fridays, we may sometimes consider other days but usually this would require either check-in or check-out to fall on a Friday. Please ask.

For 2018 all bookings of 7 or 14 nights with a check-in on Friday with receive a full welcome pack with our compliments. This includes, wine, Cornish Cream Tea (clotted cream, jam and scones), fresh flowers, local newspaper, fresh mik, tea, coffee, sugar.

Completely refurbished ready for our first season in 2010 to a very high standard, all modifications meet the relevant safety standards and building regulations and have reduced our carbon footprint in many areas of the redesign. This includes fitting double-glazed windows and doors, roof and wall insulation, and a Villavent heat recovery system. Where possible we have returned to traditional skills and building materials that befit a property first built around 1850. We are pleased that we are able to offer accommodation more suited to asthma and allergy sufferers and therefore we have a strict non-smoking, no pets policy.

Accommodates four people with:

Bathroom

Double bedroom

Twin bedroom

Living room

Kitchen / Dining room

Garden & BBQ area

The cottage is decorated with original art by local artists including paintings, photography and sculpture. More of which can be found on Artsake a UK website, but if you wish, you may also purchase some of the works in the cottage.

BATHROOM

Sorgente is an Italian word meaning SOURCE, usually used for water source but can also be used for the source of energy. Our bathroom was not the reason we chose this name for our holiday cottage but you'd be forgiven for thinking so. We have high water pressure and a large gas combi boiler that delivers copious amounts of water through our rain shower.

We added the luxury of a bidet and a bath large enough for two and to avoid using shower curtains, the floor is sealed so any splashing is not a problem. Tiled completely using Italian porcelain adds to the luxurious experience, bathing not only in water but also in lots of light, including natural light from a large skylight window.

Due to the heat recovery system there are no noisy fans each time you switch on the light and no more steamy mirrors.

THE MASTER BEDROOM is situated at the rear of the property with two double-glazed modern windows over-looking the garden. The standard-sized double bed has a firm orthopedic-type mattress, and matching bedside tables and chest of draws with mirror. Lights can be operated from bedside too. The floor is of solid oak and feels great under bare feet, even in the winter, although the house shoes provided may be more to your liking.

Sorgente's TWIN BEDROOM has two standard singles with luxury mattresses, ample storage space and access around the room. As with all the rooms, the floors are in natural wood, and in this case has been finished with bees wax, so it feels very smooth even under bare feet. With traditional box sash windows, recently restored using sound proofing and double glazing, you're sure to sleep snuggly at night. The generously sized bathroom is situated on the same floor nestled between the two bedrooms for easy access.

LIVING ROOM

A wood burning stove for those cozy evenings any time of the year, although not essential for heating especially in the summer months. During winter months this provides enough heat for the house even without the gas central heating. Kiln-dried seasoned logs can be provided for your arrival, but we ask that you order them no later than a week before your arrival. We also provide a list of places where these can be bought locally. Other solid fuels such as coal, briquettes, coalite and the compressed wood chip-type logs etc., cannot be used.

To further enjoy this spacious area with natural wooden floor, we have provided 'house shoes' (slippers) for your comfort.

KITCHEN & DINING ROOM

Between the living room and the garden, the kitchen allows light to penetrate the whole ground floor through its large double glazed patio windows. Porcelain tiled flooring compliments the warmer colours of the deep beach timber used within the kitchen area, and the tiles in the garden.

Add fresh herbs to your cooking direct from the garden, you'll find rosemary and thyme growing in the Cornish hedge and other tasty seasonals in nooks, crannies and sometimes in pots.

COTTAGE GARDEN

A cottage wouldn't be complete without a garden and ours can be a real sun trap.

It has been redesigned and rebuilt using traditional Cornish hedging as the boundary walls. These are similar to dry stone walls because they use no mortar in their construction, although Cornish walls make use of the soil knitted together by the roots of wild plants and flowers.

The garden is on two levels and children should be supervised especially on the upper level. The lower part, paved in black limestone, is an ideal spot for hanging out any washing or perhaps even your wet suits. You will find a storage box for the folded garden furniture.

From October 2015 the BBQ (seen in the images on this website) was removed to create more usable space in the garden. A new BBQ space has been built into the wall, this may be used for your own portable/disposable charcoal barbecues.

About Alex

This is our main home when we return to Cornwall. We now spend most of our time in the Italian Alps but return to Cornwall as much as we can. Our little boy is growing fast and the beaches in Cornwall are so much better than in Italy... really!

Alex purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Alex chose Penryn

On the main route (fast road or country lanes) between Falmouth and Truro. Close enough to Falmouth without having the bother with traffic, and easy to go further afield, the Lizard peninsula is very accessible. Eyns botanical gardens is only a walk away up the hill.

What makes this cottage unique

Ultra clean, and with a heat recovery system, both of which help us provide a place suitable for those with air-borne allergies and asthsma. Also, you'll not find many cottages in the area who also have a bidet in a luxurious bathroom with rain shower.

Nice house well maintained

  • 4 of 5

Nice place well situated. Clean, tidy and well equipped.

Plenty of room.

Well place to walk into Penryn and about 45 minutes walk from Falmouth.

Parking was restricted but we parked directly outside the property and left the car there apart from one day when we went to the Eden project about 50 minutes drive away.

The road outside is busy and some drives seem to consider it a race track so be careful when crossing the road.

Limited pavements going up the hill so again take care if walking.

Nice log fire which was lovely when we used it for the night.

As other users have noted, a standard lamp next to the sofa for reading would benefit as it's either very bright or dim in the lounge area.

Good cooking facilities and suitably sized fridge.

The bathroom looks nice but the rain shower does tend to leave sprayed water all over the bathroom floor as there's no shower guard or curtain.

Bed is fine with plenty of storage space.

All in all a pleasant stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Nick, it's always good to hear what guests have to say about their experience. A few guests have raised the point about water on the bathroom floor due to lack of curtain, however, there is no need for concern as the floor is sealed. The amount of water is minimal and soon evaporates with the help of the heat recovery system. The tiles are non-slip and the bath mats keep it comfy underfoot. To install curtains or a door would impact on asthetics and reduce the size of luxury bath since it is curved. Most guests do so love the bathroom as it is and prefer the openess. We have tried lamps in the living room. Due to space they became either extra clutter or get knocked over. In the future we may install a wall mounted reading lamp with dimmer. Using only the alcove lighting provides subdued lighting but enough to read by. We use LED throughout the property and yes, they are bright, but they help keep our carbon footprint to a minimum. We also hope you enjoyed the complimemtary welcome goodies :-) and that you choose to stay with us in the near future, you are most welcome! Thanks again.

Very comfortable, clean, airy, attractive home

  • 5 of 5

This is a very well cared for property; everything is in perfect condition - it's like staying in a show home.

The waxy wooden floors feel wonderful beneath your feet, the rain shower is lovely and the beds are comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped and the living room is warm and welcoming. We enjoyed our stay and felt at home. Thank you Alex!

Sorgente - The perfect location for exploring!

  • 5 of 5

My wife, baby and I found the property whilst looking for a family holiday in Cornwall to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

We were automatically drawn to it by the immaculate pictures and fantastic location! When we arrived we were not let down!

We had a long drive down through rain and wind (with a 17 month year old in tow it is not easy!) but as soon as we opened the door it felt like home.

Penryn is the perfect location for exploring the beautiful Cornish countryside. Everyday after breakfast we packed the car and headed out to explore! We were even lucky enough to have sunshine the whole week. We went from Falmouth to Penzance to St Ives and so much more! All these trips were a maximum 30-40mins drive away! Our favorite place to visit was the stunning Kynance Cove... a must visit if you can!

We only had to contact the housekeeper Andrena once and she answered the call quickly and fixed our problems straight away.

I could not recommend staying at Sorgente enough, not just for the quality of the house but also for the perfect location in Cornwall!

We will be returning very soon!

Thank you again for a memorable stay!

Sorgente - A source of delight

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I needed somewhere in Penryn to stay for a week whilst sorting out family matters. So, we had not come for sea, sun and sand, but more looking for a comfortable refuge to retreat to at the end of the day. Sorgente couldn't have been better at providing this; in spadefuls.

It is the most delightful and tastefully renovated cottage. It retains old world charm with modern day comforts.

The cottage was well equipped and everything, including all the linens and towels, were of a very high standard. Both bedrooms are spacious and we had plenty of room to hang clothes, with plenty of drawer spaces too.

It also has a superb bathroom with all modern/new fittings. The vast overhead shower was divine. Also all the little goodies which included soaps and bath gels.

Of an evening it was very cosy. We didn't light the wood burner, but can imagine that would be great on a really dismal wet and windy day. We only used the CD player, but you could bring your iPod, DVDs as well and of course there is a TV. The free WiFi was a real bonus and made it very easy for us to carry out research and find local services.

The communications and ease of booking and all the information provided by the owner was also top notch. The online description of the cottage is perfectly correct and the photography is truly representative of the accommodation.

As we were not on a holiday we didn't visit local attractions - but of course one absolute must, if you enjoy good food, is a visit to Ricky Stein's restaurant and take away near the Maritime Museum in Falmouth. The most sumptious dinner was greatly enjoyed and appreciated.

We can highly recommend this cottage.
