Wonderful property, beautiful view

Rustic farmhouse with grounds and pool with mountain scenery in nice old village

Weekends Stays Available in Spring and Autumn. (July & August excluded)

*** DISCOUNTS FOR SMALL GROUPS OF 2-4. By request. ***

The best of southern France with stunning mountain views in the beautiful valley of the Drome River. This is a three-storey renovated silkworm farm with landscaped grounds, a flowing spring, and several pretty water features. Ideally located 1km from the lively village of Saillans with its restaurants, shops and Sunday market. Tasteful, comfortable and informal décor that is slightly rough around the edges in the typical country custom. It is in the heart of the beautiful Vallée de la Drôme with a stunning view of the majestic Trois Becs. The Parc Naturel Régional du Vercors is just a 30 minute drive away.

*** Small group discounts only available outside of peak holiday season. (July & August.) *** Please note: by taking the Small Group Discount you will be leaving the top-floor bedrooms and bathroom out of circulation. *** Please enquire about small groups discounts by making an enquiry using this site; this website's price-quoting system is not set up to offer these discounts online. *** Unfortunately La Source is not suitable for wheelchairs because of the stairs. **** We are sorry but La Source is not ideal for toddlers and small non-swimmers. That is because the water features are not thoroughly fenced off and we use pool alarms instead of fences to conform to French safety laws. *** Older children who can swim will have a great time and are extremely welcome of course! ***

About the Owner

Denyse and Richard Anstey bought this ancient farmhouse in 1985. They poured heart and soul into making 'La Source' the most idyllic place to spend a rustic French family holiday. They've stepped back now, so the next generation Ansteys are now here to help you with your booking. Laura Gregori, our splendid neighbour in Saillans, acts as our manager. She speaks both English and French, and she will make sure everything goes well for you.

Fantastic property in fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

As a family of 5, we had a great week at La Source. The property is very large and spacious in every aspect, and the grounds are very private with lots of different parts to them, including a whole range of different sitting areas for different times of the day. The view to Les Trois Becs mountain are stunning.

The kids (aged 13, 15, 17) loved having their own "apartment" on the 2nd floor - very nicely self contained with its own front door (locking), bathroom and 3 bedrooms. Some aspects of the property make it less suitable for young kids, but for the ages our kids are, it was great.

One slight reassurance for teenagers - the house information pack mentions pay-as-you-go WiFi, but I think this is old, as there is free (and reasonably good, but don't live-stream too much!) WiFi in the house (better signal at the lower floors).

It's an easy 10 minute walk into the village along a very quiet road.

The scenery is great, too. It's the edge of the Vercors, so limestone mountains, cliffs and (via relatively short drives) some amazing gorges and mountain roads.

The pool is just great - it's at the rear of the property, very private, very clean, and a good size. There is a large table and chairs under the plane tree on the terrace outside the kitchen/dining room which is very quintessentially French and a wonderful place for eating outdoors, and it's made all the more pretty by the coloured patio lights draped in the trees.

The castle tower at Crest is worth going up, and for a good hike, head up to Les Trois Becs (head out of Saillans on the D156 and park at Col de la Chaudière - be warned though, the car park fills up by around 09.30). We hiked to the highest of the Becs, Le Veyou - the views are stunning.

There is a good charcoal barbecue and tools, an additional fridge in the store room for cold drinks). The kitchen is well equipped with everything you would need and there is plenty of crockery, etc, and the essentials like dishwasher and washing machine.

Also be sure to visit the various vineyard "caves" to try and buy the local (sparkling) wine, Clairette de Die. Our favourite was 10 minutes towards Die, Carod Freres.

Communications with the owners were also excellent, and their onsite contact, Laura, also popped around to show us a few things and answer some questions. She lives just a couple of properties along.

Family and friends on holiday,

  • 5 of 5

Sometimes you're lucky enough to find a hidden gem and this is one of them. There were 7 of us staying at La Source and we always had plenty of space due to the gardens and terraces that surround the house.

La Source has everything you need from river shoes to paella pans, the kitchen was very well equipped with more than enough crockery and cutlery.

La Source is beautifully decorated with an individual feel, the items of furniture have been carefully chosen to complement the house along with artwork which can be found inside and out.

Saillans is a fantastic village, with a feel all of its own, small restaurants and bars can be found in the narrow streets which are popular with the locals.

I would recommend a stay here if you want peace and tranquility, walks and cycles, I am hoping to return again, what a brilliant holiday.

Unbelievable stay in Southern France!

  • 5 of 5

Our family just returned from an amazing week in Saillans. Everything was perfect. The house and its surroundings couldn't have been better. The weather was sunny and hot during the day, allowing extended use of the beautiful pool. The property had so many spots to relax and enjoy the views. I absolutely look forward to returning soon. Not only did the house have everything needed, but the village of Saillans provided a wonderful bonus. We hadn't done any research and really didn't know anything about Saillans. We enjoyed daily walks into town. Everyone we interacted with were warm and welcoming.

Lovely relaxing stay in the Drome

  • 4 of 5

We had a great holiday here. This is a lovely relaxed house for an outdoor summer holiday, very comfortable and clean, fabulous views, good bathrooms,. The manager was helpful and arrival was straightforward. About a 10 minute walk to Saillans, which is very picturesque and has several bars and restaurants, including the Laughing Slipper which, sadly, we didn't get to try. We are a party of 6 adults and there was plenty of space and equipment inside and out. One small niggle - one pillow per person was not really enough… also, it was a surprise to find the top floor 3 bedrooms and bathroom had to be accessed from the outside, which was fine for us but might be a problem for some groups with children. I'm not good at reading detail so maybe missed this in the description!

Great place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week with 9 people. The house is very spacious. It took a while thought untill we found all the things we needed in the drawers etc. The bedrooms are very spacious. We lived outdoors as the weather was hot. Beautiful garden, but not really suitable if you have little children. We had a splendid time there. So many places to sit in the huge garden. It really is a home away from home.

Location

From the Owner

The view. The walks. The meals on the terrace. The good times on the river. Pushing the kids on the swing. This property was named 'La Source' for the natural spring that emerges in the lily-filled fish pond (bassin) at the back of the house before tumbling through a series of pretty water features, home to many frogs. Saillans (pron. Sigh-Yawn) is a charming and lively village that is enjoyed equally by is year-round residents and its visitors, many of whom come back year after year. The Drome is a region of wild mountain scenery, medievel hilltop villages, and gorgeous local food and drink. The adventurous will adore renting a kayak or going to the zip-wire adventure park in Die (pron. Dee). Others will love all the local farmers' markets, eating and drinking out in the village or cycling to the bakery in the morning for delicious croissants or a coffee in the Café Des Sports.

Due to stairs both inside and outside, it is unsuitable for people in wheelchairs.

This is a family holiday home with bicycles (with locks), table tennis and boules for your enjoyment. Tennis courts available at nearby riverside campsite.

Facilities

From the Owner

The view from the garden and pool onto the 'Trois Becs' mountain range is a true marvel. If you're fit, you can even climb it! This is a holiday that gives you the best of alpine scenery, a village that has everything you need, and a climate that is distinctly Provencal. The house is fully set up for a fun family & friends' holiday with table tennis, swing, boule and bikes. And if you prefer to do nothing at all, it's a perfect place for that too!

Notes:

  • The larger towns of Die (pron. Dee) and Crest (pron. Cray) provide big supermarkets and other amenities. There is lots of live music on offer around the Drome in summer, mostly free. Kids love the Parcour Adventure (ropes in trees, canyoning) in Die. And don't miss out on a trip down the Drome in kayaks. Choice of three kayak companies in village.
