Riad Medina is owned by 3 English friends who first visited Morocco in 2006; for us it was “love at first sight”. Many people are interested in how we came to own and run Riad Medina so, this is our story …………
It started when the 3 of us were on holiday in Marrakech, we loved it so much that, whilst we were out there we started to casually enquire about house prices and soon realized that we couldn’t possibly afford anything in Marrakech. We heard that Fes was the “up and coming” place to buy property however at that time, it was difficult to travel, as it was not a budget airline destination. When we arrived back in the UK we were contacted by an agent who lived in Fes and had heard that we had been enquiring about property – he had a house for sale that needed renovation and cost the same as a small car.
So … having been to Fes ….. never having met the agent and …….never having seen the house we decided that we should buy it – we didn’t travel to Fes to see it for over 6 months until spring of 2007! When we did arrive we were delighted, the house was charming and beautiful and ……needed renovating!!!! We embarked on a 2 year programme of renovations which is a story all of its own where every floor and ceiling had to be replaced due to rotten joists and the plaster had to be taken off every wall. There is a scrap book in the Riad showing you the before, during and after photographs.
We hadn’t really thought it through and once the renovation was complete we didn’t have a plan for the riad – by this time the world recession was just starting, the property market had fallen and so selling it wasn’t an option so we decided to rent it as a holiday let. Arranging official authorisation was a challenge and a real “eye opener” into how business is done in Morocco! And thereby started a whole new chapter where we have tried various renting models, staff etc. etc.
Obviously the house is now worth much more although we wouldn’t want to sell it.!
Alvin van Raalte purchased this house in 2006
We obviously must have enjoyed all of the renovation as … the last 7 years we have bought 2 other houses, they are in various degrees of renovation – if you are interested then I’m sure that Abdellah (our house manager) would love to show them to you – they are a 5 minute walk from Riad Medina.
One thing that I’ve learnt is that nothing ever happens fast in Morocco however ….sometimes I wonder who has got life right!!!! It’s a wonderful place for a break and ……even though I’ve now visited the county numerous times (I travel about every 4 weeks when we are doing “heavy” renovation) I still love it and …..I’m so pleased that we brought the houses in Fes and not Marrakech.
At Riad Medina, our garden has always been a feature and is an unusual luxury in the crowded medina. A Riad is a Moroccan house with a garden which traditionally has a fountain in the centre that help keep the riad cool in the summer as the breeze blows over the water. When we first purchased the house the fountain was badly in need of repair, this has been renovated and can still be found in it’s original location at the centre of Riad Medina’s garden.
A riad should not be confused with a dar, the word means house in Arabic, and is similar to a riad except that instead of a garden in the centre of the home they would have a closed-in patio area.
Ever since we brought the riad we wanted to build a pool.
We closed for 6 months at the beginning of 2012 to install the plunge pool – obviously this had to be dug by hand (as no vehicles are allowed inside the medina there is no way of getting a small digger into the house) and the soil was removed by donkey (it was good fun trying to calculate how many bags of soil would need to be removed so that we knew the amount of donkey trips and hence the number of days we would have to hire the donkey).
Our garden is always evolving and after building the plunge pool, we built a path through the garden to the seating area where you can now enjoy the tranquility.
