Riad Medina - garden, private plunge pool and terrace views over the Medina

Overview

Property

Updated: 04-Dec-2016
5 bedrooms to rent individually or… rental of the whole Riad

Riad Medina is in the centre of the Fez ancient Medina; an oasis of calm set against the bustling alleys. You can choose to rent the whole house, with exclusive use, or individual rooms. Please contact us for further details as this listing cannot show individual room availability.

This traditional house has a wonderful garden with mature trees, a traditional fountain and plunge pool to allow guests to get cool during the warmer summer months. It has been lovingly and sympathetically restored to an exceptionally high standard, keeping many of the original features and some additional luxury features to make our guests very comfortable and enjoyable.

When you stay in the house it is not just a vacation rental but a true Moroccan experience. The excellent service and the attention to detail making your stay with us a memory to treasure forever.

Many couples or parents with young children request our Jacuzzi room for an enjoyable 'splash' in the tub.

MASTER SUITE - The suite is situated on the first floor and comprises a double bedroom, a large lounge with L-shaped sofa and luxury bathroom with shower and twin basins, it is possible to sleep 1 extra adult or 2 children in the suite. It has air conditioning.

JACUZZI ROOM - This double room has the added benefit of a sunken Jacuzzi bath, it does not have air conditioning however as it is on the ground floor it is not as hot as those on the upper floors. It is possible to have an extra bed in this room. This room was renovated in Spring 2014.

GARDEN ROOM - This double, en-suite room was newly completed in spring 2013; it is very private, you enter from its own stairway and it overlooks the garden; it is air conditioned. It is possible to have an extra bed in this room.

DOUBLE EN SUITE - This beautiful double room en-suite room is situated on the first floor overlooking the plunge pool, it benefits from air conditioning in the summer months.

DOUBLE - This double room is cozy and comfortable and has air conditioning. There is a bathroom two steps away and whilst this is not “technically” en-suite all other bedrooms in the Riad have their own bathrooms so it tends to be used exclusively by people staying in the double room.

Top Traveller Review

About the Owner

Riad Medina is owned by 3 English friends who first visited Morocco in 2006; for us it was “love at first sight”. Many people are interested in how we came to own and run Riad Medina so, this is our story …………

It started when the 3 of us were on holiday in Marrakech, we loved it so much that, whilst we were out there we started to casually enquire about house prices and soon realized that we couldn’t possibly afford anything in Marrakech. We heard that Fes was the “up and coming” place to buy property however at that time, it was difficult to travel, as it was not a budget airline destination. When we arrived back in the UK we were contacted by an agent who lived in Fes and had heard that we had been enquiring about property – he had a house for sale that needed renovation and cost the same as a small car.

So … having been to Fes ….. never having met the agent and …….never having seen the house we decided that we should buy it – we didn’t travel to Fes to see it for over 6 months until spring of 2007! When we did arrive we were delighted, the house was charming and beautiful and ……needed renovating!!!! We embarked on a 2 year programme of renovations which is a story all of its own where every floor and ceiling had to be replaced due to rotten joists and the plaster had to be taken off every wall. There is a scrap book in the Riad showing you the before, during and after photographs.

We hadn’t really thought it through and once the renovation was complete we didn’t have a plan for the riad – by this time the world recession was just starting, the property market had fallen and so selling it wasn’t an option so we decided to rent it as a holiday let. Arranging official authorisation was a challenge and a real “eye opener” into how business is done in Morocco! And thereby started a whole new chapter where we have tried various renting models, staff etc. etc.

Obviously the house is now worth much more although we wouldn’t want to sell it.!

Location

From the Owner

We obviously must have enjoyed all of the renovation as … the last 7 years we have bought 2 other houses, they are in various degrees of renovation – if you are interested then I’m sure that Abdellah (our house manager) would love to show them to you – they are a 5 minute walk from Riad Medina. One thing that I’ve learnt is that nothing ever happens fast in Morocco however ….sometimes I wonder who has got life right!!!! It’s a wonderful place for a break and ……even though I’ve now visited the county numerous times (I travel about every 4 weeks when we are doing “heavy” renovation) I still love it and …..I’m so pleased that we brought the houses in Fes and not Marrakech.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Fes (Sais) Iternational at 15 Kilometres Nearest Train : Fes Gare at 5 Kilometres Car: not necessary

Riad Medina is situated in the medina. The old town of Fez is the largest walled medina in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its 9000 streets are a maze of alleyways

both large and small, and vehicles are not allowed inside the walls. Although it can be interesting just to wander the streets, if your time in Fez is short an official guide will allow you to get the

best impression of the Medina.

Approximate walking times from the riad to various attractions are as follows:-

Less than 5 minutes - Tannery and Quarwiyine mosque

Less then 10 minutes – R’Cif market

About 20 minutes – Bab Boujlouad and Batha Museum

However …..you are unlikely to walk directly to any of these as you would brows at market stalls, pause for photos and stop for coffee en-route (café clock is fantastic for camel burgers and cakes!).

The Riad is within easy walking distance of the famous tannery. Several shops overlook the tannery and they will be happy to explain some of the tanning process to you. The shops will not charge for this, and of course they are hoping you will buy something from them, but you are under no obligation.

Fez is well known for its cuisine and tagines are popular as gifts. Please note that the decorative tagine dishes are not suitable for cooking. If you are going to use them at home, choose a plain earthenware coloured dish. Also popular are the distinctive blue and white cups and plates – they are unique to Fez and make excellent gifts.

There are numerous shops selling carpets and rugs. Many of them will have been hand made in the local Berber villages and are sold throughout Morocco.

The New Town (Ville Nouvelle) is located immediately to the West of the medina. Here you will find upmarket restaurants and shops, the business district and offices. In addition a new shopping mall (with a virgin megastore) has just opened to the south of the medina.

Facilities

From the Owner

At Riad Medina, our garden has always been a feature and is an unusual luxury in the crowded medina. A Riad is a Moroccan house with a garden which traditionally has a fountain in the centre that help keep the riad cool in the summer as the breeze blows over the water. When we first purchased the house the fountain was badly in need of repair, this has been renovated and can still be found in it’s original location at the centre of Riad Medina’s garden. A riad should not be confused with a dar, the word means house in Arabic, and is similar to a riad except that instead of a garden in the centre of the home they would have a closed-in patio area. Ever since we brought the riad we wanted to build a pool. We closed for 6 months at the beginning of 2012 to install the plunge pool – obviously this had to be dug by hand (as no vehicles are allowed inside the medina there is no way of getting a small digger into the house) and the soil was removed by donkey (it was good fun trying to calculate how many bags of soil would need to be removed so that we knew the amount of donkey trips and hence the number of days we would have to hire the donkey). Our garden is always evolving and after building the plunge pool, we built a path through the garden to the seating area where you can now enjoy the tranquility.
