A very special and unique retreat
We were 3 families, totalling 10 staying in Villa Alma. I knew this was a special place when I booked and Julia phoned me up to have a chat. She is a lovely lady and her personal approach made me feel positive about our booking. The villa is obviously a very special place for Julia and her stories about its history are so interesting. The house is not full of mod cons but will appeal to those who really want to experience the essence of Italy. It is huge and there was plenty of space for everyone. We loved to sit out on the veranda looking at the mountain views every evening. Venas is about 30 minutes drive from Cortina. The drive is lovely and there were plenty of cafes to pop into on the way! Julia was very helpful with all our enquiries whilst we were there. We had a great holiday on the via ferratas and in the mountains. Thank you Julia!
great ski lodge to accommodate a large group
We were 3 families, (7 adults and 6 children aged 9-11 years old), looking to share a chalet for skiing in Cortina over the Easter break. Such large accommodation proved too difficult to find in Cortina itself but then we found Villa Alma, 25mins down in the valley in Venas di Cadore! This is the perfect place to stay with families. It is a historical home with so many interesting rooms and attics, lots for children to explore but not too delicate that they would easily damage anything. We had a wonderful time, alternating cooking feasts in around the long dining table, after a long day's skiing, to eating out in the same village at Bruno's superb pizzeria to restaurants in neighbouring villages and of course in Cortina itself. We were all enamoured by the beauty of the Dolomites and will definitely be back, next time to hike the mountains in the summer months. Julia was extremely helpful and responsive with information and generously left us a welcome food bundle on arrival, which was very kind of her and absolutely delicious! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Many reasons to celebrate!
Restoring health, family, friends AND Angelina's 100th birthday were all reasons to celebrate at Villa Alma. And...we did just that.
From the moment we stepped inside the door, I knew I had found a gem. Despite the fact Julia had just arrived and a houseful of guests had departed an hour before, her welcome was truly sincere. When she realized it was my birthday, without hesitation, she insisted we join her for dinner. This set the tone for our entire stay...fully immersed in the culture and life in Italy.
villa Alma is the quintessential European homestead, much much more than what we anticipated. And, to have the hostess in residence, well...it was the icing on the cake, so to speak.
We resided on the upper 2 floors for our stay but had use of the others as well. Beds were comfortable, property clean and the ambience was second to none. The common area was on the small side but more than sufficient for the 4 of us. We even entertained one night, preparing spatzle, melon and prosciutto, salad AND prosecco for a party of 10!
We hiked most everyday and enjoyed the fare at the Rifugio's along the way. We explored many villages and, on day 5...the emergency room in Cortina. Yes, you read correctly...my husband broke his ankle hiking, ayyyy
All was not lost, our American and Italian friends were staying 4k away at Angelina's home. Myself and my 2 sons were picked up each day for hiking and the 100th birthday celebration. Julia picked up the slack on the "homefront," making sure George had lunch each day and was "as comfortable as could be."
As I write this 6 months later, I am feeling such fondness for Julia and villa Alma along with a sense of being homesick. I am anxious to return to Julia's most welcoming ways, her incredible home and indulge in her expertise in preparing authentic Italian meals.
Julia, we WILL BE BACK! As soon as we can figure out a way.
ps. We arrived at Villa Alma after a magical week sailing in Greece. We did not think anything would top that...our stay at villa Alma with Julia was a close second.
pss. I could go on and on and on and on but...I will stop here.
Perfect place for a family holiday
We stayed at Villa Alma for 2 weeks July-Aug 2011. The house was spacious enough for our needs 11 people in all - our children, their spouses and our granddaughter. Kitchen is a bit small but quite well-equipped. The dining room spacious enough to sit a party of 12 and on warm summer days and nights a barbecue on the patio is a great option! The garden is large and spacious.
Also - there are plenty of toilets/bathrooms so there are no queues by the toilets! The house is old - and that is what adds to its charm as much of the original furniture and fittings have been retained - so some parts have a "museum-feel". The location is perfect - far enough from Cortina to have the peace and quiet of the countryside - near enough to drive in in to Cortina in 40 mins or down the valley to the next large town. The house is located by the path of the old railway to Cortina - which has been converted into a cycle and footpath and is a most enjoyable (and safe) recreation area. Venas is an excellent starting location for many day trips in the Dolomites to suit all abilities and ages. The proprietors (Julia) are most charming and were extremely helpful and fair on all accounts. If you are looking for a large house to accommodate your family and an excellent center for outdoor recreation - this is the place for you!
House-museum in the heart of the Dolomites
We (5 of us, 4 adults and a small child) stayed in the house for 2010-11 Christmas and New Year's holidays and loved the character and historical features of the house. For those of you who wouldn't mind exploring deep history displayed inside the house in additional to enjoying plentiful space and other conveniences, this is certainly the right type of accomodation. You'll find Italian fashion and leisure magazines from 1950-60s on the shelves downstairs! In a lot of ways this is not just a house to spend a night in, but a rather a museum that gives you the sense for historical heritage and architecture of the North Italian region.
Julia (the owner) was really helpful in responding to all of our questions and was available on the phone most of the time. There is also a housekeeper, Emma, who's is the most pleasant and kind lady I've ever met. If you speak Italian, it only gets better.
Cortina is around 25km from the house, and there are plenty of other towns in between which have a lot to offer. Julia recommended La Chiusa restaurant for us which is not far away from the house (up the hill on the right as you head over to Borca di Cadore), and it was excellent, just like Julia described it. Moreover, the prices at this restaurant are unbelievably reasonable, so you can enjoy it without leaving a fortune behind! There are, off course, multiple other options for lunching and dining in Cortina and adjacent towns.
Cortina is definitely the best ski resort we have skied at. The landscape and vistas are unparalleled. If you are looking to add the comfort of your own house to your trip to Cortina, Villa Alma must be the place as chalets are hard to come by in Cortina area.
We'll definitely consider Villa Alma on our next trip to Cortina.
14 persons watching the world curling championships in cortina
the house was verry good, price also ok,
we all had a wonderful tim there
owner and housekeeper did all what you can wish
hopes to come back some day!
From the Owner
“We owners love this house because it represents part of the history of the family of Julia. The property, restored more than once along the centuries, belongs to the same family since earlier than the XVIII century. We are fond of it also because there we feel near the nature with deers and other wild animals in the near forest. This old, comfortable house gives us the pleasure of inviting many friends and relatives, living in some sort of country life so well described by P.G. Wodehouse in his unforgetable novels, .But, as we are social people too, we like to spend our holidays there because, with few minutes driving or biking, we can also be involved in the special cheerful atmosphere of Cortina d'Ampezzo,”
Activity and Interests
Trekking is a walking hike on trails or streets in the wilderness of the Ampezzo's Dolomites. Among all the ”extreme” sports that you can perform in Cortina, the MTB is surely the simplest and the most accessible. Climbing in our Dolomites is good for any level of climbers, also for non-expert ones. Skiing on Tofana, Cristallo, Faloria, 5 Torri and the many other slopes of Cortina will be some of your greatest sport experiences. Not to talk of fashion shopping, disco dancing and all the entertainment offered in the pearl of the Dolomites. At 4 km from Villa Alma and the village of Venas di Cadore there is the mountain museum of Mount Rite at 2,200 meters altitude with an extraordinary view at 360° with Mount Antelao, Pelmo, Tofane, Cristallo, Croda Rossa and Marmarole in sight. At 6 km from our property there is an excellent wellness centre, with swimming pools for adults and children, aromatherapy, finnish sauna and tennis courts. Venas has one of the best restaurants of the valley.
Other Activities: rafting, iceskating, fantastic wellness center and spa at 8 km
Golf: In Cortina d'Ampezzo there is a 9 hole golf course. In San Vito di Cadore there is a golf practising area. At Bosco del Cansiglio (40 - 50 minutes drive) there is of the most famous Alpine golf courses. At home we have an artificial approaching device for practising in the garden.
Ski: There's lots of hype about Cortina d'Ampezzo. But Cortina lives up to and goes beyond the hype. The resort is a fashionable, trendy, après-ski haven for partiers yet it's thrilling for skiers and offers some unique experiences not found anywhere else. Cortina is nestled in the Ampezzo valley near Italy's north-eastern border with Austria. It is part of the Dolomiti Superski Region that offers 1,220 kilometres (762 miles) of trails in 12 ski areas and a single lift pass that gives access to all of them. Cortina's slopes provide 140 kilometres (87 miles) of trails with 51 lifts to transport skiers to the top. All of Cortina's slopes are open to snowboarders and there is a fun park with a half-pipe. Seventy-three miles of trails are dedicated for cross-country skiers. Many non-ski activities are fun, as well. Extreme sports enthusiasts can ride down Cortina's Olympic Bobsled at 75 miles per hour. Those who enjoy less extreme sports will enjoy the resort's sledding runs. Our properties are available primarily for family holidays, typically for periods of one week up to 3-6 months. It can also be available for long weekends, film & photographic work, weddings, company's team buildings, concerts and conferences..

“Staying in Villa Alma is a special experience. It makes you dream the life style of early XXth century, with the old portraits of the family on the walls, with the hunting and checks trophies on the chimneys, with boiseries all around you, with thousand books in the bookcases. But sauna and hydromassage shower take you back to the present time and make you ready for next day's sports..”
