About this property

Sourdough Ranch Black Bear Cottage - Great winter rates!

Rent with Sourdough Ranch Main House for a group of up to 13 guests! Downtown Bozeman is just six miles away.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This charming two-bedroom cottage enjoys a prime location south of Bozeman with fantastic mountain views, lots of peace and quiet, and hiking right out the back door. The original Black Bear Cottage was built in about 1920 and originally encompassed the area now represented by the living room, a small loft and the kitchen. The dining room was originally an open porch and the bathroom out the door to an outhouse! The building was completely renovated in 2013-14 and the original look, charm and character of the cottage were retained as much as possible and has been tastefully decorated for a comfortable lodge-like feel.

BEDROOMS/BATHROOMS: The cottage features a main level master bedroom with a king size bed and master bath with a gorgeous stone tile bathroom and a spacious double showerhead stall. The second bathroom features a tub and shower combination and is located just off the main level living area. A large open area comprises the second floor which features a gorgeous queen-sized log bed, a nice twin pull out sofa and a great twin-sized sleeping platform in front of a window that sleeps one person comfortably or is great for just relaxing and reading a good book! This area is really kid friendly as well, with plenty of books, games and toys available. Both bedroom areas feature flat-screen SmartTVs with a few local channels available.

KITCHEN/DINING: This fully equipped and well-designed kitchen has top of the line appliances and amenities, high-end countertops, and gorgeous Alder cabinets. An electric range, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and dishwasher make meal preparation convenient. An island separates the living and kitchen area and provides additional counter space. A dining room is just off the kitchen as well, seats 6 people, and is surrounded by windows that lend a wonderful lightness to the space.

LIVING ROOM: The kitchen opens up into the living room with a gorgeous rock gas fireplace as the focal point, where a small leather sectional sofa allows you to enjoy a cozy evening by the fire. A mini-split cooling and heating unit is located here, as well as in both bedrooms, and helps maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the house at any time of the year. Air-conditioning is a rarity in Montana, so this feature is a great amenity!

SETTING, ACREAGE, VIEWS: A spacious deck with plenty of seating is on the front side of the home, where you’ll enjoy meals overlooking the valley! The home is immediately surrounded by an abundance of trees and bushes, and the opportunity to see wildlife in the area is incredible. Note: Views from the cottage are 95% stunning but Bozeman's drinking water facility is in the view shed on the property.

OUTDOOR AMENITIES: Take advantage of 240 acres and miles of private roads and trails that are part of this property. Bozeman Creek is at the bottom of the hill for fishermen, and Sourdough Trail is just up the road for hikers. Also, there is a small pond on the property that is stocked with brook trout!

NOTE: Winter guests will need 4 wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle. No parties or events allowed.

ACTIVITES NEARBY: Besides hiking and mountain biking right on the property and on nearby Forest Service trails, the stunning Hyalite Reservoir Recreation Area in the Gallatin National Forest is also a short drive away. Guests can spend time skiing at nearby Bridger Bowl, which is about 20 miles from the home. Horseback riding, rafting, golfing, tours of Yellowstone National Park, and everything that the town of Bozeman has to offer are at your finger tips.

Need better house cleaners & response time from property mgr
Overall house is nice. A few issues: ants everywhere as a open container of sugar was left in the kitchen cupboard. Cobwebs in every room around ceiling and lights. Dried poop in toilets and the Master bath shower had a slow drain so very slippery and my elderly parents almost fell twice! Place has flashlights but no new batteries so didn’t work. Lastly, this home is in a natural preserve so they had a bag with bear spray in it…unfortunately it was all used up! So, we couldn’t go explore the beauty around us in case we encountered a bear! Most frustrating was the lack of response by the property manager. She never responded to my voicemail. I hope I can get my cleaning deposit back as I cleaned a lot during my “vacation”. I most likely won’t stay here again even though I have family in the area for another 2-3 years.

We loved it!
Wonderful property, wonderful location, wonderful views! We loved our stay! The cabin was very well stocked with necessities and so cute and felt like home. All of the windows left you catch all of the wonderful views and even some wildlife up close! We did day trips to Yellowstone, did the Grizzly Bear Encounter, Fairy Lake and the Bozeman Stampede. A wonderful family trip and we will definitely return.

Incredible location!
The views of the Bridger range and neighborhood deer walking through the yard were a highlight. And being able to walk to Sourdough canyon trail from the house was an added benefit. The house itself is very solid, warm, and cozy. Others have mentioned that there is no TV in the living room but rather in the bedrooms. It was a little strange but we watched less TV, so that was a win. The kitchen has everything you'll need, except Tupperware, so grab some at the store if you need it. Lastly, the master bathroom sink was clogged the whole visit. Not wonderful. The house manager did come by and try to fix it by pouring hot water down the drain, but it didn't fix the problem at all. She came on Thanksgiving, by the way. I didn't want to bother her again so we lived with it. I'd stay here again, the location and neighborhood are away from town but close enough if you want to do a yoga class, hit the restaurants, and shopping. Our favorite dinner place was Stacy's Old Faithful in Gallatin Gateway. The food was incredible and the atmosphere is true Montana.

Perfect location
We stayed here while visiting my daughter at MSU. The cabin was perfect for hosting dinner for everyone, and the location couldn't be better. We loved everything about it and we would love to return next time we are in Bozeman.
