Great house and holiday, but the set up won't be everyone's cup of tea!

Firstly, I would say that, on the whole, this house is great. The pictures on here give a fair representation & we all enjoyed our stay. The kids loved playing in the pool & there was plenty to do indoors, with a games room, table tennis, games, videos & DVDs. The bedrooms were clean and comfortable & the kitchen was very well appointed.

Minus points were that the pool was very chilly (despite apparently being heated!) & all but 3 of the bikes had punctures, so be prepared to make some repairs if you want to use them! Also, the electrics were slightly dodgy & occasionally we lost power, including one time when the kettle went out with a large bang! The fridge freezer also died on us while we were there, but Shelagh was quick to sort out a replacement & did all she could to make sure we weren't too inconvenienced.

The owners live in a self-contained flat within the property. The family occupying the rooms beneath would be disturbed by heavy footsteps from above. Shelagh would often come into the house (without knocking) & would regularly be found lurking in the utility room or kitchen. She would also be straight out into the garden/pool area as soon as we went indoors. A few people in our party did express that they felt this was intrusive & that maybe she was checking up on us! If you want to be left alone on your holiday and have some privacy, this house is maybe not for you!

Also the owners have a large dog that lives on site. Although it's a perfectly nice dog, they do let it urinate & defecate in the garden. To be fair, she does follow it around with a trowel & clean up after it. I'm not a dog owner, so don't know if this kind of thing is the norm, but I would have probably taken it for a walk for this purpose. I'm sure if one of the kids had taken a wizz in the roses, this would have been an issue for the owners! There is also a bit in the bottom of the garden with a dilapidated old bridge that goes over a stagnant pool. It wasn't a big issue for us, but may be to some with small children.

Finally, the owners are quibbling over the deposit & have told us that there will be some charges & deductions for breakages & BBQ cleaning. Admittedly, there were some minor breakages (cheap wine glass/old cafetiere), but I don't know the final bill yet. I have been informed that I am not allowed to mention the specific amounts charged anyway, which is a shame as potential customers should know what they can expect to be charged for wear & tear.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the positive comments! Now to deal with the minus points, The pool is heated and as it was being used most of the day it had to be topped up on a regular basis because of water loss due to splashing and jumping in (one of the reasons why the owner went into the garden when it was vacated) With regard to the bikes, it was 3 with flat tyres,(now repaired) the other 11 were fine. There is no problem with the electricity, clients before and since have had no problems and had no outages. As we were not present in the house we were unable to ascertain what was being done to cause the outages which resulted in damage to an American fridge/freezer. After consultation with the manufacturer and a local repair agent it had to be replaced as there was too much damage to the circuit boards The kettle had no water in it which is why it went bang!! The self contained apartment and the underneath bedrooms have been very well insulated so it is difficult to hear any noise or movement from upstairs. The owners NEVER enter the house without permission from one of the adult members of the party. The clients arrived early despite being told they couldn't and the remaining work had to be done working around the clients use of the facilities. The dog was taken off the property for excercise on a regular basis and was only taken into the garden when the clients went indoors despite repeated requests to leave the dog in the garden so they could play with it! I always cleared up after the dog and frequently hosed the area down (obviously not when the clients were in the garden). I would have serious concerns about school age children being allowed to use a garden as a toilet! The large pond and bridge at the bottom of the garden can be secured by closing the two gates. The charges were not just for wear and tear, but also for non reported breakages and for several contraventions of the owners Terms and Conditions with which they agreed to comply

Beautiful home away from home.

This was our second visit to Maison Theresa in as many years and we have loved both holidays. Both times we stayed we were a mixed group of family and friends with ages of 18 to 74 and everyone loved the accommodation, from the out door pool to the games room. There was enough of everything you could every need, from cycles to picnic hampers, mussel pots to paella burners and pans. There is room to lose each other in the house and grounds. Fresh pastries and breads from the bakery every morning, BBQ in the afternoon sat around the outdoor table. The hosts, Richard and Shelagh were very welcoming, always pleasant and always helpful if required.

If you want a relaxing getaway for a large group you could not find anywhere better.

Wonderful stay at Maison Theresa

My family had a great stay at Shelagh and Richard Shirley's Maison Theresa. The house is located about half way between Paris and Normandy. It is a beautiful and well maintained older property with a large swimming pool. There was plenty of room for 8 adults and 7 children. The kitchen and dining room are spacious and fully equipped. The village of Bourth with a bakery and restaurant is in biking distance (bikes provided), and there is a full size grocery within a half hour drive, as well as several other restaurants. Paris is a 45 minute drive to Dreux and then an hour train ride. Normandy is about a two hour drive. We visited Versailles and Giverny which are both about an hour and a half drive. Our only regret is that we tried to do too much in terms of trips away from the house; we would have been better served (particularly the grandkids) to stay at the house, play pool and ping pong, swim and just enjoy ourselves. Shelagh was at the house when we were there and is a gracious host, and a very nice person. A plus for us was the dog Jack, who is a friendly older guy who likes to chase balls. Maison Theresa gets our highest recommendation for a larger group like ours.

Excellent

We have just returned from a short half term break. The weather was not good but we were very impressed by this quirky and attarctive property. The property was clean and all equipment worked properly. The level and quantity of equipment was exceptionally good - by far the best of any of the properties I have rented over the years. The grounds are extensive and very well maintained down as far as the ancient orchard (which starts well beyond the end of of swimming pool). The pool was impressive and crystal clear but the chilly weather prevented us oldies from testing it. The property is an easy 15 minute walk from the centre of the tiny village of Bourth which is useful for morning baguettes and croissants but it is very quiet and probably unsuitable for those who enjoy a lively nightlife. That said we did explore by car some small towns nearby and even had a daytrip to Rouen (well recommended). The owners were on site living in an upstairs flat which has its own entrance entirely seperate from the entrance to the main building. They were friendly and helpful and not at all intrusive.

All in all we would highly recommend this property for the large party who want a quiet restful break especially if some decent weather can be arranged!

A Great Place for a Group Holiday

We have rented this property for a week each year for the last 5 years. We find it excellent for our needs as a group of mature cyclists. The house is well furnished and very well equipped in terms of leisure activities and kitchen equipment. We particularly like the dining room and the external dining area with large barbecue and table under an arbour. The pool is a good size for swimming and we enjoyed sitting in the well maintained garden when the weather is good. The full size snooker table and table tennis have entertained us on wet days. In fact the property has everything we needed for a great holiday. The house has some history and quite a bit of character, although it might not be to everyone’s taste.

I think the website description with the photos give an accurate representation of the property, apart from one narrow bedroom which is not in the photos. The owners have been helpful and easy to deal with. We have always found the house clean and tidy and it has been excellent value for money. This part of France is short on major tourist attractions but we enjoyed the peaceful rolling countryside and quiet roads for easy cycling. I definitely recommend the house for groups like ours.

FABULOUS

Well what can I say about this property.

The house is fabulous. We pulled up the driveway and thought what a magnificent house. The children were the first to run in and explore all the rooms. The living room was comfortable with lots of seating, there was a large TV with a range of DVDs to watch. The cupboard in the hallway was full of various games to play. The bedrooms were furnished beautifully and the bed linen and towels were clean and fresh. There are tea/coffee making facilities in all the bedrooms along with a trouser press/iron/ironing board and TV.

The dining area seated all of us, and it was nice all sitting round the table. The kitchen had 3 cookers (1 which you could use as a grill as well as an oven), a gas stove and hot plates. There was plenty of plates/dishes etc for us all to use.

The children had many games of pool and snooker in the pool room, they also enjoyed playing table tennis. There were bikes for us to use which we put to good use, having many a bike ride around the country lanes.

The swimming pool was great and being blessed with good weather spent many a day in there. There was enough sunbeds for us all to use. We used the BBQ on several occasions. There are lots of seating areas outside too.

All in all my family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Maison Theresa and hopefully will go back again.

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday to enjoy with a large family/friends then I would highly recommend staying at here.
