Why Steinunn Sigurdardottir and Thorsteinn Hauksson chose Selfoss

We bought the architectural pearl of Thoristun 19 in 1997. Every year we make improvements and renovations. For instance, all the sleeping rooms are recently renovated, with new luxury beds.

Great stay at Selfoss

  • 4 of 5

Property is fully equipped with thoughtful additions in refrigerator to make arriving easy and a joy. The villa was immaculate, clean and comfortable. Selfoss is centrally located on the south coast of Iceland and is perfect starting point for self driving tours to all the country attractions from Reykjavik to Hofn in the south and the Snaefellsjokull peninsula going north. This visit was blessed by fair warm rain or cold for the entire stay. The second bathroom on the second floor is not convenient for those occupying the two bedrooms on the first floor; however, the stair climb is easy.

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

House was perfect for our stay in Iceland. We were 2 couples so we had plenty of room in the house. Washer and dryer are helpful after we figured out how to use them. A bit of a challenge, directions for this these would be helpful. Otherwise the owners were very accommodating for our stay sending great directions on how to find the house as well as contact information for them and local care takers. They provided area maps and restaurant and shopping directions as well. I felt Very confident about our stay and we're pleased with the very comfortable accomadations!

Pleasant stay

  • 4 of 5

The two of us enjoyed our stay, helped a lot by neighbor and house manager Halla, who found an acupuncturist for my sore back and even took us to visit her nearby horse farm and family brewery. The house is a short walk to very good restaurants, and day trips to fantastic scenery and hikes were easy. The house is as advertised, and it is to be noted that it has no microwave. But the kitchen is otherwise amazingly well equipped. Just provide your own paper towels. The washer and dryer work fine, but only if you read the English language operating manual. The entry is a bit dark, but once you get up to the main floor it has plenty of windows. The master bedroom bed could use a new mattress, but overall the house was comfortable and we're glad we stayed there for five nights at the end of over two weeks in Iceland.

Selfoss is half an hours drive from Thingvellir, a place of incomparable beauty - the historic Parliament site from the times of the Sagas. Only 70 kilometers away are some of the most renowned sightseeing spots in the country, The Golden Waterfall (Gullfoss) and the geothermal area with the one and only Geysir. Half an hour’s drive away is Hvolsvöllur and Fljotshlid, where Njal’s Saga takes place. In little more than an hour you can reach the spectacular attractions of the south coast, with glaciers, waterfalls and very impressive and varied cliffs. You can make a one day excursion to the national park of Skaftafell, surrounded by Europe´s largest glacier, and the famous iceberg lagoon, Breidamerkurlon, where you can sail amidst the icebergs.

Other Activities: Half an hour drive from Thingvellir, the historic Parliament site from the time of the Sagas
