About carolyn owerka

From Beacon Hill to Sugar Hill. We're Carolyn Owerka and Alyasha Owerka-Moore, two generations continuing our family's legacies in Harlem. We garden: nurturing the peonies brought from China as wedding gifts to our maternal great-great grandparents in 1880. We create: she is an art historian who restores fine art textiles and old houses and he creates everything from concept to product to the 'buzz' for the 'next trend' in the men's fashion industry. You'll stay in his top floor pied-à-terre since he is now often on the West coast, in HK or Boston. Yes, we love jazz: he specializes in early jump blues and the evolution of early Black rock n' roll. No, we don't cook but are very successful reservation and suggestion makers, having enjoyed the treasures of this city for the last 4 decades.

Wonderful three-bedroom flat in Manhattan

  • 5 of 5

Five of us stayed at Carolyn's for a week earlier this month. Her gorgeous home is located on a quiet, tree-lined street with very attractive, well maintained, three- and four-story homes built in the 1920s . The third floor flat is beautifully furnished with three bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, a wonderful dining room table, comfortable living room and very large bathroom - all decorated with art work and textiles. We were busy in the afternoons and evenings at museums, parks, the theater, restaurants and jazz clubs so really enjoyed quiet mornings at home. Carolyn is a helpful, gracious host. We all really enjoyed our stay and appreciated Carolyn's friendly manner. We look forward to future visits.

Lovely comfortable spacious apartment

  • 5 of 5

Carolyn was very friendly and helpful. She made us feel welcome. The apartment us fantastically situated with a subway just around the corner. It allows you to get a taste of the hustle of nyc and then come back to a quiet neighbourhood. The apartment is full of lovely furniture and is really homely. It can't be faulted. We hope to return.

Holiday of a lifetime

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Carolyn's for ten nights and we had a great time. the place is spacious and fresh, even when NYC was really hot, the place has great ventilation, and we did't even need to use the air con. Is well located and close enough to the city center, is very clean and quiet and the building is beautifully decored with art from different places and textiles.

I highly recommend this property to stay, the host is great and you have absolute privacy at all times. we hope to be able to visit again in the future. Marco and Jose

Owner's Response: Marco and Jose came from UK to enjoy the City with family members coming in from Columbia - mother, brothers and sister-in-law all spreading lots of joy and laughter everywhere. They were the guests one hopes will re-book often. Theirs was a wonderfully orchestrated visit that made good use of their every moment here in the City. Even with all their touring activities, they were great tenants who kept the apartment as if it were their own home.

A wonderful retreat after a fun day!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property during a recent trip to NYC. Upon check in, Carolyn spent time with us and gave us tons of information about the house and the area. Although it is a bit of a climb up the stairs, the space and light makes it totally worth it. We slept with the fans on and the windows open. There was a beautiful cross breeze through the house. We learned at the end of our stay that there are window ac units available for when it is warmer. Be sure to request these. All appliances worked well. Kitchen was well stocked with the basics, including a coffee pot! There is not a huge amount of storage for clothing etc other than the dresser and closet in the master bedroom. The furniture was comfortable and linens were provided. The apartment was clean and well cared for considering it's age. We traveled with my mother in law, my two daughters, myself, and my husband. There was plenty of space! The house was quiet. There is a subway about half a block away. We used public transportation the whole time and returned to the apartment late many nights. We never felt unsafe. Just use your best judgment! We had a wonderful breakfast at the Coral Cafe around the corner and used premier car service at Carolyn's Suggestion. Carolyn was a wonderful host and you never would have known you were sharing the house with anyone else.

A Beautiful Apartment in NYC... perfect for vacationing!

  • 5 of 5

This became a memorable NYC Birthday Vacation! Thank you Carolyn!

I booked this cozy apartment for my husband, myself, and 5 other friends for 5 nights in November 2014. It was a perfect birthday get-away and it didn't create a dent in our wallets. Carolyn was a great host! She kept me posted on essential information in preparation for our stay in NYC. She was always attentive to my emails and answered all my questions within 24hrs. Once we arrived to the apartment, she welcomed us with a walk through of the apartment, briefly went over subway routes, bus routes, and gave us a list of near-by restaurants, bars, and grocery stores. She also made herself available in case we needed anything during our stay or had questions. Carolyn had a couple of strict but reasonable rules. I loved that we had a living area where our entire party could meet for breakfast or after a long day and simply enjoy our time together. I'm already looking into future dates I can book to take the rest of the family out to NYC. Thank you for your hospitality and for welcoming us to your place Carolyn!

Owner's Response: Pam, her husband and friends were a really wonderfully nice and gracious group to host and, hopefully, they will become one of our group of "returning vacationers". It is always so exciting to see people again and hear about their adventures since their last visit. One cannot say more than they were great guests!

New York Apartment

  • 5 of 5

A warm welcome from Carolyn to a beautiful home. We stayed for 5 days and were accomodated with all our requests. Metro station was right around the corner 2minutes away for an easy ride into the centre of Manhatten or anywhere else in New York City. Friendly neighbourhood with lots to do within a few blocks. Would definitely recommend this apartment to all families. Thanks Carolyn x
