The property is an old Breton stone cottage which has been sympathetically renovated to a high and luxurious standard whilst still retaining its French charm. The cottage has electric heating throughout and a working wood burning stove in the comfortable, spacious lounge - making the property ideal for out of season use as well as enjoying the warm Brittany summers. The rooms are all light, airy and spacious, with the large fully equipped dining kitchen, which seats 6 very comfortably, including an LCD TV (UK satellite channels / French digital TV channels), DVD player. The kitchen has a patio door which leads to the front garden where there is a cast iron marble patio set ideal for 'al fresco' breakfasts.The large rear garden has very pleasant outlook directly onto the Brittany countryside and is separated into a landscaped area with garden furniture and a barbeque for the long summer evenings and a turfed area which is suitable for children to play in.

About David & Leonora Scaife

We bought the cottage over 10 years old when our daughter was very young. We wanted a home away from home which we could relax in and escape the busy lives we have in the UK.

Why David & Leonora Scaife chose Dinan area

We chose the cottage as it is set in the very tranquil Brittany countryside but by car is very close to the awesome quiet Brittany coastline and so many beautiful towns and cities. Its great to relax in the cottage and its grounds but makes it easy to explore Northern Brittany. Whilst Brittany is close to the UK it is is full of French culture and the very relaxed French way of life that makes it such a relaxing place to be without travelling far. The house is light and spacious and the kitchen is large and well equipped that you can forget that you are in a holiday home but you are back at home.

What makes this cottage unique

The views of the Brittany countryside from the back garden are what attracted us to the garden. In the summer it is great to have a barbecue twinned with the Breton cider and slowly watch the sun go down. The size of the garden allows the children to play and the shrubs and bushes are a great addition to a game of hide and seek.

Brittany is a beautiful part of France. The beaches and coastline are brilliant, they are clean, quiet and beautiful. Parking is really easy and it is never busy so even in summer you can relax on a beach without it being completely full of tourists.

  • The main bathroom is on the ground floor typical of traditional properties in Brittany and features a bath with shower over and also a separate shower cubicle with thermostatically-controlled shower for extra comfort and safety. Bathroom 2 upstairs has toilet, wash basin and shower. Upstairs there is a further bathroom with a multi-jet shower, toilet and wash basin. There is also a seprate toilet downstairs.

All the bedrooms are comfortably furnished whilst retaining the character of the cottage, and include wardrobes. Bedrooms 1 and 3 feature latex beds for a superior comfortable sleep. The spacious and comfortable lounge with seating for 6 has a log-burning fire which is ideal for relaxing in front of on out-of-season evenings and logs are provided free of charge. Electricity costs are included in the rental. For evening entertainment the lounge includes a TV, DVD player, Sky satellite TV and a CD music system with an i-pod dock. An additional LCD TV and a DVD player are in the kitchen in case the children want to watch something different from the parents. Free unlimited wireless internet access is available Bed linen and luxury Christy towels are available for an extra charge on request.

Very pretty with lovely garden

We found the cottage very comfortable and warm and very well-equipped. The beds were very comfortable and everywhere was lovely and clean when we arrived. As there were just two of us we had ample space with a choice of bedrooms and the kitchen was massive with all mod cons! The owners would appear to have thought of everything. The only drawback for us was that the stairs were quite steep but that was probably just our old bones! The garden is lovely even in the autumn and there is plenty of garden furniture in several spots throughout the garden. The surrounding area was ideal for getting out on bikes as it is quite flat and there are some lovely villages in the vicinity. We had loads of information about where to visit, where to eat, where to shop and were never short of somewhere to visit. I would recommend the cottage to friends, especially those with young children, as there was even a stair-gate at the top of the stairs!

This property is very tired, damp, dirty and needs some care from the owners, this includes the Garden area.

I would not recommend a stay here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review re week commencing 12th September; however we are extremely puzzled by your comments for the following reasons: 1) At no time during the stay nor afterwards were we made aware of any concerns or issues that required resolution. If we had been contacted during your visit we would have tried to resolve any issues. We do ask all guests to send a feedback form (including stamp addressed envelope) to highlight where improvements can be made - we have not received this form from yourselves so we have no specific information on which to act. 2) On average we have 14 or so guests per year and in the feedback forms we have consistently received very positive feedback from virtually all guests, including several who return to the cottage year after year. 3) We are particularly puzzled by the "tired" comments in the review as the house has been redecorated regularly, and much of the furniture (particularly in the bedrooms) has been purchased quite recently. We have a regular program of improvements to the property - for example in the past few years we have replaced the wooden floors upstairs, installed a new solid oak staircase, fitted new patio doors with electric shutters, and installed high end branded electrical kitchen equipment and supplied Denby crockery. 4) The garden is large - around half an acre - and is located in the countryside and is maintained fortnightly to a good standard, however inevitably the whole garden cannot be weeded every week. In addition a new septic tank was installed earlier this year which required re-landscaping of part of the garden.

Just returned from the cottage and I could not recommend it enough. Very well fitted out with modern appliances and the wi-fi was great for our teenage daughter (what did they do before the internet?).

Beautifully set in the French countryside but only a short drive away from several fantastic beaches and other tourist attractions within easy reach as well.

All in all highly recommended and if we were returning to the same area on hoiday this would be the first place on our places to stay list.

Splendid Cotage in a Rural Setting

We spent a very relaxing week at this cottage in Aug 09. The cottage was as described and the facilities were all very high quallity. The cottage was very comfortable and quiet and the very large garden was exellent for our two young children to explore. It provided a good base to explore Brittany with good road access to St Malo, Dinan and Jugon. Good safe beaches were found nearby and many markets were explored throughout the week. A car would be an absolute nessecary to be able to explore the local area as the distances to the local facilities are considerable, however this does provide plenty of peace and quiet. I would thourougly reccomend this property to anyone.

We found this cottage to be in a quiet location, but very close to all the interesting places. The cottage was very clean and tidy and exactly as described on the website. The owners were very helpful in a great many ways and catered for ALL family types, even down to small knives and forks for the younger members of a family. I have already recommended this cottage to our friends and relatives. All in all a very relaxing holiday.

Relaxation in Brittany

We spent an enjoyable and relaxing week at the cottage which we found to be clean and accurately described on the website.

There was plenty of information available at the cottage with regard to the surrounding area, restaurants,supermarkets and places to visit.

Had lovely meals at L'Auberge de l'Ecu at Jugun les Lacs only 5 minutes down the road.

Situated in a very peaceful area with lots of lovely walks and handy for the Brittany beaches.

We have already recommended the cottage to friends and family.

The cottage is set in over a third of an acre in a small and very peaceful hamlet near Bourseul. Located in the tranquil Brittany countryside it is ideally located close to the medieval town of Dinan (20 minutes) and the lakeside town of Jugon Les Lacs renowned for its watersports (10 minutes). The Brittany coastline and its beautiful clean child-friendly beaches are only 20 minutes drive away.

The cottage is located 5 miles off the main Dinan - St Brieuc dual carriageway making it an ideal base to explore Brittany whilst still being based in the heart of the countryside.

The picturesque town of Plancoet, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, large supermarket and 14th century church is 10 minutes away.

Other Activities: historical - castles etc

Golf: The Côtes d'Armor region offers you year-round golf on varied courses in an exceptional settings along the Brittany coastline and beautiful inland courses. Nearby golf courses include Dinard, Pen Guen, Sables d'Or and Corbinais.
