About the property

Pet friendly, 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms family cottage in peaceful, scenic valley

The Property

Bwthyn Angell is in the picturesque Penmachno valley. A cosy, semi detached cottage situated in scenic, secluded surroundings ideally located to explore the Snowdonia National Park. The cottage has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The slate floored sitting room is warmed by a wood-burner set in a feature stone fireplace, while the large kitchen with dining area benefits from a high ceiling to give a feeling of spaciousness. Doors from the dining area lead out onto the patio seating area at the rear of the cottage where you can sit and relax after a day out walking in the surrounding hills. The countryside around Bwthyn Angell is magnificent, with stunning country scenery, occasional waterfalls, and slate quarries to explore within walking distance. Within easy reach of the cottage is the popular Penmachno Mountain Bike trail, the outdoor pursuits centre of Betws-y-Coed and all of the delights of the Snowdonia National Park including rock climbing, Zip World zip wires at Bethesda and Blaenau and the Forest Coaster in Betws Y Coed, hill walking, the Tree Tops Adventure High Ropes Course, Go Below mine exploration and the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Slightly further afield are the towns of Beddgelert and Llanberis, and the beaches of Barmouth, Harlech and Criccieth. Bwthyn Angell is a home from home for all the family providing a comfortable base for you to return to at any time of year.

Accommodation

The front door leads into a comfortable lounge with two sofas and an armchair (seating six) Freeview TV, DVD player, Broadband router and stone fireplace with wood burning stove. And in the corner, a small games cupboard and modest book collection for the occasional damp(!) day.

To the side of the lounge is the spacious kitchen diner. The kitchen features a cooker, hob, fridge freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, microwave, caffetiere, toaster and kettle. There is also a useful range of pots, pans, crockery and utensils. The diner has a table seating six, and an armchair for quiet reading time away from the TV. There is a large map showing local walks and topography.

Stairs, with stair-gates, lead to the first floor main bedroom featuring double bed, wardrobe and views of the hills and waterfall (subject to rain!) to the front of the property; the bunk-room with 3ft wide bunk beds, wardrobe and views of the hills and waterfall to the rear of the property; and the main bathroom with bath / shower over, basin and WC.

About Annie and Steve

Hi, we are Anne-Marie and Steve, we live in Kent at present, while our two children finish their education, then we plan to relocate to Snowdonia permanently. We bought Bwthyn Angell (Angell is Anne-Marie's family name) 18 months ago because we love North Wales, and this lovely cottage in Cwm Penmachno is an ideal base from which to explore the village, old quarry walks and the wider Snowdonia area. We hope you will love it as much as we do.

Annie and Steve purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Annie and Steve chose Betws-y-Coed

After visiting Snowdonia for seveal years, we looked for a local base to use as often as we wanted. Bwthyn Angell is far enough away from the hustle of the hotspots to be peaceful, but still within easy reach of all the main attractions the National Park has to offer. We love the scenic, peaceful route from Betws Y Coed along the valley to Cwm, with it's river and mountain views, and glimpses of the local wildlife. And when the sun comes out to play, the valley is a virtual suntrap.

What makes this cottage unique

Set in the beautiful and peaceful Cwm, this old miner's cottage offers a restful retreat from the busier aspects of the Park, but is central to all it's attractions. The road through Cwm is a no through route which makes it very quiet. If you don't fancy driving, there is a cycle carrying bus to Betws Y Coed, and within the immediate area are numerous enjoyable cycle routes and walks, some of which take you through the old slate quarries and past waterfalls.

Notes:
There is a local bus that accomodates bicycles, for those whose ambition exceeds their stamina! We have installed a ground anchor for motorbikes at the front of the house, below the main bedroom window. Bikers welcome.

Lovely very spacious cottage, beautiful spot

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was exceptionally clean throughout and nicely furnished with everything we needed, fortunately being particularly well supplied with games and DVDs which were useful during an unexpectedly wet and snowy Easter! We loved the view both sides and exploring the village and slate quarry ruins nearby, and found the location handy for a range of days out.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Ruth, and glad you liked the cottage. Have had a few rainy days ourselves when our kids were young, so we appreciate the value of the DVDs and games too. Consider coming back during the summer and seeing the mountains bathed in sunshine.

Lovely Property, Really Clean, All the Essentials, Fantastic Location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in this property. It was exceptionally clean on arrival and had everything we needed for our stay. The weather was good, so it was lovely sat out in the garden in the sun in the evening after long walks around Snowdon. It's in a very peaceful village, but excellent location for exploring the main attractions of North Wales. We'll definitely be back at some point in the future. Thanks

Bwthyn Angell is ideally situated for every type of activity. From Betws Y Coed, the gateway to Snowdonia, it is a short drive to Llanberis where there is the railway to the summit of Snowdon. And if you're feeling energetic there is a variety of alternative trails to the top including the Watkin Path with its stunning waterfalls!

The beaches at Barmouth Harlech and Black Rock Sands near Porthmadoc are fantastic places to spend lazy days and, Anglesey boasts more than 20 unspoilt beaches. Not forgetting Llandudno, a classic seaside experience with Blue Flag beaches, historic streets and two ways to get to the Great Orme, the Great Orme Tramway or it's very own cable car. It also has ski-ing and a tobaggan run!

From the cottage, the Conwy falls are located at the Junction of the B4406 and the A5, and there are falls in Trefriw (B5106), which is past Llanrwst up the A470 from Betws Y Coed. There are also numerous small waterfalls locally, a few easily accessible during your walks. Take care!

And from your front door you can walk and explore the area around the Cwm, including the old abandoned slate mine village high up on the hills. The popular Machno Mountain Bike Trail is approx. two miles away, offering various levels of challenge.

Go Below provides guided adventure trips into the eerie subterranean world of the abandoned slate mine in Cwm Penmachno. You'll journey through magnificent chambers, across flooded blue caverns and climb up underground waterfalls.

Love heritage? Then the various steam railways are a must including the Llangollen Railway and the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, travelling through the most breathtaking scenery.

If you're feeling adventurous........just over the mountain in Llechwedd is Zip World Titan, the largest zip zone in Europe and there is Zip World Velocity near Bangor, home to the longest zip line in Europe.

For those days when the sun isn't shining (it does rain occasionally in Wales) there is plenty to do, including the 'Electric Mountain' in Llanberis, hiding the largest pumped-storage hydro-electric power station in Europe, Sygun Copper Mine near Beddgelert telling the story of Victorian miners and the Llechwedd Slate Mine Experience.

No visit to wales is complete without castles and there are plenty to choose from, Caernarfon, Beaumaris, Conwy, Dolbadarn, Harlech...there are so many and they won't disappoint.

There are boat trips and RibRides along the Menai Straights and for the foodie and flower lovers, the gardens of Plas Tan Y Bwlch, Bodnant. Plas Brondanw, Plas Cadnant, Gwydir Castle and Portmeirion will delight and inspire.

There is so much to explore and enjoy...............
