Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom 3 Bathroom Modern Family Home On Edge Of Mountainous Nature Park

The house built partly underground uses a domed concrete shell technique. The face of the house is glazed, a huge cantilevered aperture at its centre ventilates the whole house.

The upper floor floats within the dome on a steel and wooden structure. The steel supports help to break the spaces on the ground floor into Kitchen/Bar, Dining area, Living with TV and Stereo. The ground floor covers 100m2. Entrance hall and pantry plus ground floor bathroom with washing machine complete the plan.

The first floor is divided into 3 bedrooms, 2 of which have en suite bathrooms. The central bedroom space is ideal for children with 2 single beds. The double bedrooms have king size beds one of which can be divided into 80cm singles easily. More sleeping accommodation (2 people) can be provided using a double sofa bed in the ground floor living room. The house can accommodate 8 people max.

A shaded steel structure, continuing the dome shape provides an indoor/outdoor space that glows after dark. Outdoor furniture plus built in BBQ make it the perfect place to gather, eat and relax.

A circular 6 meter diameter pool is underway to provide our guests in 2017 with a private swimming experience. Enjoy the infinity views and shaded seating, out the front of the house so all occupants can enjoy the scene.

If you like modern living and surprising architecture you will enjoy your stay here.

The house is built and designed by the owners.

About Robert Collyer

I purchased this piece of land to build our family home on.

I am a designer and builder and this is the third home I have built. I strive to make homes that function in harmony with the elements, that use the least amount of material and heat and cool themselves naturally.

Robert Collyer purchased this house in 2013

Why Robert Collyer chose Horta de Sant Joan

After much searching, a piece of land that had water frontage, southerly views, and access to the Green Way cycle track became available. We have spent the last three years making our dream house, now we look forward to renovating the land to support us and as much local wildlife as possible.

What makes this house unique

First and foremost this property benefits from its proximity to the mountains. Thanks to them the nights here are cool and crisp. The heat is drier and very manageable. The two mountain rivers provide plenty of fresh water swim opportunities. The views across to the Rocas de Benet and the Nature Park beyond are astounding. The inspiring landscape makes for a heady back drop to a uniquely designed holiday home.

Amazing house in brilliant location. Recommended!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks to Rob and Evie for a wonderful holiday.

The house is an amazing structure and the views are breathtaking. The whole area is stunning and the hosts provide a list of tips of places to visit for wild swimming or cycling. We spent the week visiting different river gorges, waterfalls and canyons for unforgettable swimming experiences with plenty of wildlife spotting along the way. The house is directly next to the Via Verde cycle route which is created from a disused railway, so is completely traffic free and - beat this! - slopes very gradually down hill all the way (if you pick the most sensible direction of course!). Local cycle hire companies kit you up then pick up you at the end of the day and drive you back home. Perfect for families. Montsport in Horta were fantastic and we did this day out twice.

The world doesn't seem to have discovered this part of Spain yet, though there were in the know Spanish tourists around we met only one other foreigner. The place was wonderfully quiet and completely fit the bill for what we were looking for - a holiday to relax and swim but not on crowded summer beaches.

Highly recommended!

The house sits on 8 acres of mediterranean pine forest and orchard, terraced with limestone walls down to the meeting of two rivers. Their sources so close to one another but their differing journeys giving them their own unique character: one is refreshingly cool, perfect for a high summer dip the other warm enough for young children to enjoy it's shallows. It is fun to explore up and down the river, over smoothed rocks and along deeper tracts of water. The river is lined with fig trees, dragonflies and frogs are your neighbours, you may even have the pleasure of spotting a pair of otters!

A typical leisurely day out here usually goes like this: take kids on bikes during the cool of the morning on a gentle down hill ride on the Via Verde cycle way to Balneario de Font Calda, a limestone gorge with deep natural swimming pools. Have lunch at the Restaurant situated on the site of the Monastery, swim, sun bathe in the afternoon, arrange pick up from the local bike hire tour company to take you back to nearby Horta de San Joan. Drink in the square to soak up the evening atmosphere, toodle back home on the bikes (10-15 mins). Pick some fresh toms from the veggie garden, throw together a salad and relax into the view. Quite honestly it doesn't get better than that for me!

The neighbouring unspoilt ancient hilltop villages (4 of which are under 10km away) provide you with a window into bygone rural Spanish life. The sandstone facades dating back as far as the 12th century in places, feel so far removed from modern life you can immerse yourself in their history. Each village throws a party during the summer months inviting everyone to enjoy music, traditional dance and dress, bull runs, bouncy castles and trampolines as well as locally made produce, market stalls and more. Don't miss out during your stay, ask me whats on! Kids will love a day out at any of the local municipal pools, for a small entry fee you can enjoy open air swimming in one of these large modern pools with shade and a summertime bar providing light snacks and refreshments.

Historically the area had been known as a zone for top quality olive oil, nowadays the area makes some great wine. Our nearest village of Lledò will welcome you in with a tasting at Bodegas Crial. If Vinitourism is your fancy, don't miss the opportunity to witness the "Cathedral of Wine" in Pinell de Brai, built in the Modernismo style with soaring brick arches, a worthy homage to Spain's favourite beverage.

Thanks to the areas relative "undiscovered" title it allows for sightseeing and exploration without the crowds. You can ride horses along hundreds of kilometers of maintained trails in the Els Ports Nature Park. The park itself occupies 400 square meters of territory at the meeting of three borders: Catalonia, Valencia and Aragon. The northern face that we look across at, is valued during the summer months for its spring water filled gorges that provide seemingly endless opportunities to swim. Through narrow gorges, under waterfalls and for the brave; jump into from the polished rocks above. The proximity to the mountains of the Els Ports Nature Park provide walking, climbing, caving and pot-holing, not to mention bird watching and Ibex sightings all close at hand. Local companies provide guided tours and group activities for all skill levels to help you get to know the terrain. We also supply maps and walking trail routes for guests who like to go their own way.

We searched all over Spain to find a location we could build our family home on, one that would inspire, excite and fulfill our thirst for nature: and this is it. Come and share it!
