A secluded home-from-home with spectacular mountain views and daily housekeeping
El Tejar is the highest house in the small village of Montecorto, just 15 minutes from Ronda, with amazing panoramic views of the Grazalema mountains.
This exceptionally romantic house (featured in several interior design magazine) is decorated in Andalusian/Moroccan style. Whitewashed beams and terracotta floors have been stylishly combined with warm colour washes. There are hundreds of books, CD players in all rooms, a collection of beautiful paintings and prints as well as wifi internet (with desktop iMac). The 4 large bedrooms have the same bright/ethnic feel: linen is top range, mattresses too, and all are en suite.
A charming housekeeper, Francisca, cleans and tidies every day (if you so wish) and can prepare typical Andalusian meals. Sculpted into the hillside is a circular pool surrounded by terraces shaded by olive, almond and citrus trees. El Tejar is an exceptional holiday home - not just an ordinary villa - and perfect for a relaxing, secluded and spoiling holiday.
Included daily help: Two hours of daily cleaning help from a charming, and discreet Spanish maid is included in the weekly rental price.
(Occasionally guests prefer for Francisca not to come up to El Tejar to clean and tidy. No problem....).
What is so unique about El Tejar is that, if you should wish, Francisca can also prepare meals. She can either prepare a wide range of 'tapas' for you - these are made in her own home then delivered to you for your lunch or dinner. Or she can also cook a full 3 three course meal (minimum of 4 people) which will be served to you at your candlelit dining table.
Francisca uses organically grown vegetables from her husband's vegetable plot and prepares delicious meat and fish dishes of the 'slow' cooked variety.
Why is this place so exceptional?: What is so special about El Tejar is that although you're at the edge of the village, when you sit on the terraces or by the pool no other house is visible. You have the best of both worlds: easy access to village shops and bars and an utterly secluded location.
We believe we have the most comprehensive guest information of any rental property in the area which includes information on the best local bars and restaurants, where to visit, and detailed route notes of the area's most beautiful walks including our own guide books to the area (see Amazon.com: Guy Hunter-Watts 'Walking in Andalucia' and 'The Andalucían Coast to Coast Walk', Santana Books).
Renowned travel writer Alastair Sawday recently included El Tejar amongst his top ten favourite places to stay in Southern Spain and we've had features written about the house in several UK newspapers. We are also recommended as a rental property by i-escape, the award-winning travel website.
A bit more about the village and the area: Montecorto is a quiet, friendly village. There are a number of bars and restaurants including one in the pine forest where you can have al fresco meals. There will always be somebody who is keen to talk to you! There is a bakers, four small grocery stores - two of them provide baskets so you can pick things off the shelf, a useful thing for non-Spanish speakers - as well as a bank and chemists. A lot of the fruit and vegetables for sale in the village come from the fertile terraces beneath the village. If you prefer to shop in supermarkets, there are several choices in Ronda, just 15 minutes from El Tejar.
We provide arriving guests with a booklet listing our favourite bars and restaurants, interesting visits in the area, maps of the village, of Ronda and of the surrounding area, a history of the house and general information about the house. We have found that this little booklet really helps you get the most out of this beautiful area where we've lived for more than two decades.

Beautiful house in a beautiful setting
What a great place! We loved the house which was comfortable, spacious and perfectly decorated in character with this region of Spain. Everyone in our party had a great time and, in addition to appreciating El Tajar, loved the village of Montecorto and its friendly people. Pacqui, the housekeeper, couldn't have been more helpful. We all hope to return next year. Highly recommended so long as you don't try to book at the same time that we want the house! K & M, Hertfordshire.
Great base for walking
This really was a fantastic place to stay as a group. Very clean and comfortable and beautiful to look at. We were able to get an early start to our walks as it was really convenient to the surrounding national parks. There is not a lot happening in the village but it does have a couple of bars and places to eat and a shop for supplies. We also used the option to have our evening meals cooked for us and there is a really great dining room for proper meals!
Serene getaway in a beautiful mountain village.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay at El Tejar. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we ended up booking a second week at the sister property, Dar Hajra. If you are hoping for a quiet getaway in a quaint mountain town in the South of Spain, look no further. El Tejar is a comfortable and spacious property that includes all of the comforts of your own home. We loved having all of the comforts that we´re use to at home. The kitchen is equipped with all necessary cooking utensils, there´s a laundry room with washer and dryer, large dining area and separate sitting room with wood burning fire places in each room. There are countless books, DVD´s and a great wifi connection. After traveling for two weeks prior to arriving at El Tejar, we were so grateful for the warm welcome, tapas and wine that was waiting for us.
During our stay, we enjoyed day trips to Ronda, Zahara, Grazalema, Sevilla (check out the music venue La Carboneria for an authentic Flamenco experience), Granada (we highly recommend taking the train- it´s a beautiful journey), and we even took a ferry over to Tangier Morocco. Our days were filled with adventure, but we sure enjoyed coming home to a tidy space and on some occasions a home cooked meal. Paqui, keeps the home clean and is also available to prepare delicious local cuisine. Her tortilla espanola muy rico! We love hiking, and we followed the owner Guy´s recommendations for local trails, and found his route notes very easy to follow. Don´t miss the walk of the Hidden Valley. We had a wonderful family vacation and we hope to return.
An unforgettable holiday
We loved El Tejar from the moment we arrived, both from the oustside and inside. We had previously stayed at the owner's other house but this time needed more space for all the family, and friends of our kids.
The house is beautifully decorated and the views from the terrace just gorgeous and we loved the really private feel of the pool area.
We found that having a daily visit from Francisca - she comes in to tidy for a couple of hours around midday - made the stay that much more relaxing, and our computer-obsessed son was glad to discover that the house had fast wifi and a desktop Mac computer.
We too advantage of FRancica's cooking which you can order in the morning and have delivered for your evening meal - particularly recommend her homememade meatballs and the bizcocho (is that how it is spelled?) cake, which we had made for my husband's birthday.
We have stayed twice now and have alreday booked for next year.
STUNNING HOLIDAY VENUE
In Spring 2008, with a group of friends, we had the privilege of staying at El Tejar for a walking holiday based on the owner's route notes and maps. There was a huge variety of walks and all were wonderful in different ways. In particular was a route taking us staight from the house to a rocky crag from where we watched vultures and eagles riding the thermals - truly unforgettable. El Tejar itself could not have been a better place to stay - peaceful, comfortable, well located and included daily help from the lovely Francisca. We've booked again for 2009!
Second to none!
We've stayed at El Tejar on three occasions now and will be returning again later this year. The views from the house, which is tucked away in a pine forest at the top of the village, are sensational and there are several different terraces for drinking it all in. Sangria or a G&T as the sun sets over the Grazalema Natural Park are a must.
We were glad to find a bottle of wine awaiting as we'd forgotten to shop in Ronda before arrival (you should because the village shops aren't open on Saturday afternoon). The best supermarket inh Ronda is called Mercadona, on the west side of the town, easy to find if you follow the owners instructions in the guest information booklet.
The house is always spotless on arrival and having Francisca to help clean every morning is great. We had fun practising our Spanish with her and one night she prepared us a meal which included delicious homemade gazpacho.
The equipment at the house was all in good condition and our two boys appreciated having internet access. We particulary liked sitting out on the terrace above the pool - which was where we ate all of our meals.
The decor has a strong Moroccan influence and our favourite room is the suite Casablanca though it must be said the stairs up to it are very steep. It has a gorgeous view and we lay in bed one morning and watched an eagle circling above the village. Being tall we were glad to have such good mattresses - they're not only long but really comfortable, too.
We reckon the village is the friendliest we've come across in Spain and although nobody seemed to speak any English we were always able to make ourselves understood.
An added benefit from using the house is the opportunity to use Guy, the owner, for his extensive local knowledge of local walks and other activities. He has lived in the area for more than 20 years and has written a number of walking and guide books and there's no-one better to make your holiday enjoyable and active!
And this house is excellent value: we stayed at a place in Italy that cost almost double the amount and it wasn't nearly as nice as El Tejar. Last time we stayed a nightingale was singing every night. It made us feel like we were on a second honeymoon!
Activity and Interests
The pretty village of Montecorto is at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere reserve, which has some of the best hiking in Europe. (The owner of El Tejar has written a guide to the best walks). The fauna and flora of the Park are remarkable: more than a third of Spain's plant species grow here and ornithologists come from the world over because of the abundance of raptors and migrating birds. Just a quarter of an hour away is the extraordinary Roman theatre of Acinipo, hewn out of solid rock, and the Pileta cave - with some of Europe's best rock painting - is just a short drive away. Ronda, one of Spain's most spectacular towns, can be reached in fifteen minutes by car. The village of Montecorto is one of the 'pueblos blancos', a cluster of white hill villages which stretch from Arcos in the west to Ronda in the east. These villages are amongst the prettiest in Spain. And Sevilla, Jerez, Arcos, Cadiz and Granada can all be easily visited from Montecorto
