Overview

About the property

Lovely charming cottage that has been modernised but retains its character with traditional Godin stoves, original ceramic floors and beams give our cottage a homely feel. Our cottage and garden are on three levels with one step between kitchen and sitting room and two steps between sitting room and lounge.

It is an easy 75 minute drive from Calais and is a short drive from the market towns of St Pol Sur Ternoise, Frévent and Hesdin, and a 25 minute drive from the historic town of Arras with its beautiful squares and many bars and restaurants.

There is a good selection of supermarkets, restaurants and bars in both Frevent and St Pol. A mobile shop selling bread and other basic food items visits Gouy most weekdays. The vibrant coastal resorts of Le Touquet and Berck are a 50 minute drive as is the cultural city of Lille. Bruges & the Belgian border are only a 2 hour drive away. The area is full of history from the mediaeval battlefields of Agincourt and Crecy to the more recent ones of two World Wars with the Wellington Tunnels at Arras, the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge, the memorials and battlefields of the Somme within easy reach. Children will love the beaches of the Cote d 'Opale and particularly the steam train ride around the Baie de la Somme. .

About Jan Britten

We purchased this property in October 2013.

We were looking for a rural, quiet property that was within easy reach of all the local attractions as well as the coast, Paris & Belgium. We also wanted an easy drive from Calais so we could visit regularly without spending hours in the car.

As we run our own business we have installed wifi to allow us to work from here as easily as we can from home. We hope our guests will enjoy the cottage & the area as much as we do.

Why Jan Britten chose Gouy-en-Ternois

We fell in love with the original character of this property. Originally 2 properties which have been lovingly restored & refurbished over the years whilst keeping the charm of its original features such as the beams, original floor tiles and windows.

its in a peaceful rural setting but within easy drives to main towns, Belgium, the coast, many historic war sites and just a train ride from Paris. it's also just an easy 75 min drive from Calais so easy to get the taste of France without hours spent in the car.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed here for the first full week in August. The property is a dream and extremely well appointed, there was nothing we wanted for and the bbq was super, the village tranquil. Although there are no shops in the village we used ones while we were on our way back from trips out and we used the lady who comes in a van most mornings for fresh croissants and bread. The weather was really hot but the house kept cool with its traditional tiled floors. There was plenty of hot water from the overnight storage tank for 5 to shower in the morning and plenty left if required in the evening too.

A place to unwind, take-in the beauty of the local countryside and relax

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is very well equipped ,cosy and spaceous.

We spent a very happy week at Gouy - no shops, no bar, but a cockerel crowing in the morning, church bell chiming.... It was a real rural retreat!

Facilities at the cottage enabled:

me to read two books during the week, usually sat outside in the sunshine (as a rule I don't manage that many in a year)

my wife knitted a pair of socks

our daughter to complete a large jigsaw.

the four of us to enjoy several games of scrabble

a couple of BBQs and al-fresco dining

Daughter and fiancee particularly liked having access to British TV

We did visit, Thiepval, Arras, and Azincourt - all easily accessible without a great deal of driving.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a lovely review. We're glad you enjoyed a quiet and relaxing week away, it's certainly a great place to "get away from it all" which is why we love it too. We home to welcome you back to Chemin Vert in the future.

Very enjoyable.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed staying in the cottage which we found very French and quirky. Garden seating area, barbeque and garden were really good. Plenty of room inside for a family, parking was the only difficulty. The small cellar key was missing , although we did not need it.

We visited Aqualud in Le Touquet which the children loved as well as the beach. Denlys theme park was also a hit. Visited St.Pol , Frevent and surrounding villages in the lovely countryside.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a lovely review and we're glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. I apologise that the cellar key was missing, not sure what happened to that but it has now been replaced for future guests, should they need it. we look forward to welcoming you back in the future to enjoy the peace and quiet of the rural French countryside.

A well located and equipped cottage

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed fantastic short stay at this comfortable gite. It was well furnished with all equipment that you could need. It is located in a quiet rural village but with easy access to larger towns which contain numerous supermarkets, bakeries and tabacs. The cottage is well situated for exploring the local area and also visiting World War I battlefields and monuments. We would definitely return to this gite if we visited the area again .

The quiet countryside

  • 4 of 5

This cottage was very much like the photos on Jan's website - very quaint and comfortable. The home is a good size for five or six people with the three bedrooms and a pullout couch and cot. Lovely grounds and so many birds and flowers starting to bloom. If you want a quiet resting place to come back to you will be very pleased with the little village of Gouy en Ternois and the cottage charm.

What l would expect of a very old French cottage,

  • 5 of 5

The property is as described, if you are looking for an old style typical French rural cottage this is the ideal place. It is very rural so you will need a car, but is central for areas of interest in Pas de Calais, but what a place to retreat to at the end of the day. Books, games DVD's, PS2 to keep the kids entertained, not that mine needed it

Used a local recommended riding school and they were superb.

Will be going back, this time with my bike as the local roads are ideal for cycling. Fist class
