Overview

About the property

La Cidrerie consists of three cottages, formerly an old cider farm.

Apple Cottage is semi-detached with Cider Cottage. It comfortably accommodates 6 people and comprises:

One double bedroom with a king-sized bed

One triple bedroom with single beds

A downstairs bathroom with a bath and over-bath shower

A separate toilet

A large lounge with a wood-burning stove

A well-equipped kitchen/diner

A cot is available

The cottage has been made child-safe with catches on drawers and cupboards.

Having ourselves stayed in houses and gites with blunt knives, an odd assortment of kitchen equipment, and lumpy beds,we have made every effort to make the cottage as comfortable, welcoming, relaxing and inviting as we possibly could. Surroundings matter a great deal to us, and to this end, there is an array of Hilary's paintings on the walls and a wide selection of books avd DVDs providing a friendly place to stay.

In addition to providing accommodation, Hilary and I run painting courses on a full-board basis, using all the three cottages, for painters and their partners. We make wide use of the abundance of painting locations in the surrounding area and provide 'gourmet' meals. There is a separate pricing regime for these courses, so why not get a group together and join us on a course? We are flexible as to dates for these weeks.

Our area is fringed by endless sandy beaches - Jullouville, Carolles, Granville, St Jean le Thomas, Hauteville, Blainville sur Mer, St Pair sur Mer and so many more. To the north of Granville you can see the huge mussel beds at low tide and even better, in season, sample moules frites at one of the beach-side cafes.

About John Frame

Eating oysters in Cancale - 5 euro for 12!

I retired in 2009 (finally!), after a career as a finance director and CEO, to become head gardener and chief bottle washer on my wife's painting courses - how are the mighty fallen!

Hilary was an art teacher and now concentrates on her own painting, as well on as instructing on the courses we run at La Cidrerie, and on cruise ships (when we are not in France).

John Frame purchased this cottage in 2002

Why John Frame chose Saint-Pierre-Langers

Lovely area and reachable within an hour and a half from Caen or St Malo, and we live in Bognor Regis, only half an hour from Portsmouth.

Granville is called the 'Monaco of the north' - it has a large casino- but is an attractive town to visit. It has a commercial fishing port (you can buy fish straight from the sea), and a wide array of seafood restaurants. The 'Haute Ville' is popular with artists and has many galleries, and the main town is good for retail therapy.

There is a daily hydrofoil to Jersey, which makes a good day out, where you can practise your English and spend some sterling in M & S!

The Iles de Chausey, a collection of islands (65 at high tide, 365 at low tide), are a short boat trip from Granville. You land on the one habitable island, which is a nature reserve and the only permitted means of transport are 'shanks' pony' and bicycles. It has only one pub/restaurant, so it is probably advisable to take your own food and drink. And check the weather before you

go!

The beaches all around (especially Jullouville and Carolles) are child-friendly. Being so close to the coast the there is a profusion of restaurants and beach bars serving seafood. Our favourite is La Cale at Blainville sur Mer, north of Granville. The proprietor calls it the 'worst restaurant' in the world - it's not; it serves moules frites, fresh from the mussel beds , to die for!

Le Mont St Michel, 40kms away, is a 'must see', and remains one of the most visited attractions in France. Go in the evening in summer, both to avoid the crowds and to see and hear the wonderful 'son et lumiere' in the abbey at the top - it's worth the climb!

Avranches is very attractive town, overlooking the Mont, and has attractive public gardens and an amazing scriptorium. It was General Patton's base in WW2, and has a US tank in the main square.

We are an hour away from the D-Day beaches on the north and no trip to Normandy should lack a visit to this historic and atmospheric area. The beaches, cemeteries, and museums at Arromanches, and Omaha and Utah beaches should not be missed.

There is a beautiful and moving cemetery at St James, just south of Avranches. A contrast is the vast German cemetery overlooking Le Mont St Michel at Huisnes sur Mer.

Do go and see the tapestry at Bayeux, a reminder of our own history, and a very well put together exhibition.

The zoo at Champrepus, just 10kms away; it has an exciting collection of animals, and the baby goats and daily penguin-feeding aaare a godsend to harassed parents!
