About Caroline Riddle

The above is me with Kellie Holmes! This was taken at the gym I go to in Tunbridge Wells where I currently live. I grew up in Wareham and went to the now defunct Swanage Grammar school. I moved to Kent for my career in policing. I spent 30 happy years as a police officer reaching the rank of Detective Inspector (it's not like it is portrayed in the TV by the way!). I retired in 2009 and spent some time travelling and trying to learn Spanish (not very successfully). I am lucky and have been all over the world but my heart lies in Dorset. I think it is the most wonderful place with amazing scenery and a fantastic history dating back thousands of years.

Caroline Riddle purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Caroline Riddle chose Wareham

I have known this property most of my life. It is a wonderful cottage which is ideally located within the Walls. The property has so much character and is I. the centre of this small market town. There was a Great Fire of Wareham in 1762 which is well documented. There is a reference to s few houses in Howards Lane surviving the fire this cottage is one of them so it is seeped in history. The property itself as is surprisingly large on the inside with a large kitchen diner, separate living room and two large double bedrooms.

What makes this cottage unique

As soon as I saw this cottage was for sale I knew I wanted to buy it. I have known it from the outside most of my life and have been fascinated by its quaint small door and and lovely old appearance. Inside there are beams everywhere which is amazing. The property had been modernised in the 1970,s by the look of the decor (avocado bathroom downstairs) but I could see with some imagination it could be brought back to life but keep its character. As a listed building we obviously had responsibilities both legally and ethically to maintain. We installed a shower room with WC upstairs for modern living as well as removing all traces of avocado from both the bathroom downstairs and the kitchen.

Lovely cottage in a little gem of a town and a super location for visiting some fantastic places!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage in a great location. Wareham is an absolute little gem of a town with everything you need and the high street is just a few steps away! Even though the cottage is very close to the high street and the car park it is still very peaceful and we were not disturbed by noise at all. In Wareham you can stroll along the towpath by the river, take an amble around the Saxon Walls Walk, (although we ran out of time to do this!) or just sit and watch the ducks and swans on the river, either on the Old Granary terrace or the benches situated out the front of the old Granary. Everything in Wareham was an absolute delight! There are a variety of lovely pubs, restaurants and takeaways to choose from and all sorts of different shops and a library with lots of tourist information. You can pick up free information leaflets here and buy other information booklets and maps. They were very helpful! A permit is provided with the cottage for free parking in the public carpark which is just literally out the back of the cottage. We used this for our car and it was safe in there overnight during our stay. Wareham is a great place as a base for visiting so many lovely places in this region of Dorset. We only stayed 3 nights but crammed a lot in and plan to come back again to re-visit some of these places and visit the ones we didn’t manage to fit in. The scenery on the coastal path walk from Durdle Door to Lulworth cove was just spectacular! As was Studland Bay and Old Harry Rocks which can be reached from here. A truly beautiful part of the country! Caroline, the owner of the cottage was very helpful and responded quickly to any questions. The only thing I could add to improve the cottage would be a little back garden! There is a little area out the back of the house but more for access to the back door but you can see the neighbours little lawn and roses from the kitchen window. A great few days in Wareham – wish it could’ve been for longer!

Super cottage centrally located to explore Dorset

  • 5 of 5

What a fabulous place- it’s spacious tastefully furnished and felt like a real home from home. All our needs were catered for plus we had access to WiFi and were central for all the many attractions plus Wareham itself .We were more than pleased that we sampled restaurants in Wareham and were delighted, the first right by the river with superb food where we were made to feel important with their service and another night at the Priory where it felt like the Ritz.

Lovely cottage in ideal location

  • 5 of 5

There were just the two of us but this cottage is plenty spacious enough for four adults and a little one. Spotlessly clean with everything you need, comfy bed and a relaxing lounge. Great wifi. Photos don't do it justice. One of the sofas could also be used for sleeping and there's a downstairs shower room so guests who struggle with stairs can be accommodated.

The location is ideal: just next to a spacious car park and the High Street with loads of eateries and a Co-op, but only a short drive from beautiful countryside and coastlines, and still peaceful at night.

Caroline is helpful and only at the end of the phone, while never intruding, which is absolutely perfect.

We loved it here and would definitely stay again. Many thanks!
