Overview

About the property

Thatched cottage on the shore, Berneray, Outer Hebrides,

Idyllic thatched cottage wonderfully situated on the shore of the beautiful island of Berneray, off North Uist, in the Outer Hebrides. Fall asleep to the sound of waves gently lapping the rocks and wake to the sound of gulls and oyster-catchers, the playful splashing of seals and possibly an otter sighting. The cottage is superbly equipped and furnishings and decor are of the highest standard. Spotlessly clean and well maintained. Perfect if you are looking for a remote, 'elemental' holiday with bracing walks on vast, unspoilt beaches, eagle watching, hill-walking or fishing - or just being cosy and quiet by the peat-burning stove! Berneray is a lovely, welcoming island and this is a perfect base for exploring the island's beaches, machair, hills and archaeological sites. Just across the permanent causeway is North Uist, with many more stunning, white-sandy beaches, turquoise seas, lochs, hills and history. Shop at the Ardmaree Stores attached to the Lobster Pot tea-room on the island or at the Lochmaddy Stores, or the Co-op at Sollas, North Uist , twenty minutes drive away. Pick up great sea-food at Kallin on Grimsay. There is an impressive national RSPB nature reserve and a St Kilda viewing point over the causeway on North Uist. The Aurora Borealis are frequently seen from the islands.

The accommodation consists of an open-plan sitting room looking out on the sea, with dining table; fitted, well-equipped kitchen with dish-washer, and background heating, plus log-burner already laid for your first fire. The bathroom has an over-the-bath shower and the hot water is always on.. The simple, elegant bedroom has a new super king-sized bed, and looks out over rocks and sea. Reclaimed, cherry-wood floors throughout and Harris Tweed soft furnishings add to the warmth and elegance of this beautiful and easy to live in cottage. Washing machine and tumble dryer in the outhouse. WiFi. Garden with bench - watch the ferry come in across the Sound of Harris and enjoy the seals basking on the reef.

About Hilary White and Anna Dreda

We live in the beautiful county of Shropshire in a tiny, unspoilt village. Finding a holiday location better than where we live has always been a challenge! Imagine our delight when we discovered the Outer Hebrides - and in particular, the magical island of Berneray with its peaceful and utterly beautiful landscape, friendly locals and amazing wildlife, including eagles, otters, owls, dolphins, sea-birds - all to be spotted from the cottage, or on wild and windswept walks o'er hill and beach.

Hilary White and Anna Dreda purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Hilary White and Anna Dreda chose Berneray

30 Backhill said 'home' to us the very first time we stayed there: elegant, cosy, private and right on the edge of the sea, we loved it from the start. Having holidayed in the cottage for several years now, we jumped at the chance of buying it and now look forward to sharing our joy in this most special of holiday cottages with you.

What makes this cottage unique

30 Backhill is a beautifully restored (by the previous owners) derelict 'black house'. The stone walls, the Loch Tay reed thatched roof, the deep window-sills, the cherry-wood floor, the Harris tweed furnishings, the immaculate maintenance - all make this a very special place indeed. Four of the six windows look straight out at the sea. The garden which surrounds the cottage is the perfect setting for enjoying the view - or drying your washing! The local people are friendly and welcoming and the "Nurses' Cottage" a few minutes walk away is a beautifully curated museum of the island's history, managed lovingly by volunteers.

Backhill Cottage - perfection on Berneray

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a base to explore the Outer Hebrides Backhill Cottage should be on anyone's shortlist and it is only a short walk from the Berneray ferry and 20 minute drive from the ferry terminal in Lochmaddy. First impressions surpassed all our expectations - especially the location only metres from the sea which is perfect for bird, seal and otter spotting and there was something very restful about tuning into the rise and fall of the tides. The cottage is really well laid out for 2 people and incredibly cosy and tastefully decorated - the stove that was set for our arrival didn't have to be lit in the week we spent there. The massive bed with a sea view was special as was the power shower that set us up for each day. We arrived to find chilled prosecco and nibbles in the fridge - a gesture much appreciated. The bookshelves are full of guides, maps and literature which compliment the island experience. The beaches on Berneray and the neighbouring islands are up there with the best in the world and we spent a lot of time exploring the dunes, surf and rockpools - the closest only a short walk from the cottage.

As seasoned cottage renters we could find absolutely nothing to fault about Backhill cottage and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for accommodation on the islands.

Beautifully situated. Extremely well equipped and very cosy. Everything is of a high standard

  • 5 of 5

We were there at the end of September 2017. The cottage itself is delightful and beautifully furnished. The bed is very wide and very comfortable~the views of the sun rise from the bedroom window were exquisite. Watching the seals from inside or out in the garden was a wonderful experience. Walking on either East or West beach with our dog exported us to other parts of the world- the beaches are so very beautiful! At times it was very windy and so to be tucked up inside listening to the elements was a special pleasure. We found the people on the island very friendly offering us suggestions on walks and places to visit. Altogether a holiday which will stay with us, giving us wonderful memories.

Enjoyed the stay and while its our third time on the islands, never stayed on Berneray before and glad we did. Otters, seals, red throated divers all from the sitting room window. Hen Harriers on the way to the CO-OP ! The house has a Lobster wind-vane !

Wonderful, welcoming, cosy cottage by the sea

  • 5 of 5

30 Backhill is the most wonderful cottage I have ever stayed in. It has everything you could want or need, windows that look over a seal colony, and is a walk away from some of the most beautiful beaches in the Hebrides. It was almost impossible to leave and I'll be booking my next stay asap!
