Why Phil and Elaine Smith chose Barnard Castle

We fell in love with Hilltop because of its location so close to the Pennine Way on one hand and lovely Barnard Castle on the other. There is so much to see in the area and we have stayed in the area loads of time over the years and always found something new every time.

What makes this house unique

Hilltop had been recently refurbished when we bought it in late 2015 and we were amazed at the size of the rooms and the lovely garden at the back. Everyone we have met in the village is very friendly and the pub down the road is great and highly recommended.

Autumn Break

  • 4 of 5

A lovely cottage that has been well decorated inside, the outside doesn't do it justice. You need to have a car because there are no shops in the village but Barnard Castle is only 4 miles away with all the shops you would need. I had a great stay and it was a good base for touring County Durham I went to High Force waterfall, which is well worth a visit, Beemish museum was only an hour away and well worth the trip and I also went to the Durham mining museum. I stayed 9 nights and would recommend it. The cottage has large rooms and sleeps 4 comfortably.

Fabulous cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fabulous week at Hilltop. The cottage is lovely. It is equipped with everything you could possibly need and there are instructions for all the appliances. The tea, milk, biscuits and even dog biscuits were a lovely bonus. The cottage has a lovely lay out, it is beautifully decorated and was immaculately clean. I especially loved the shower. Having wifi was useful and we appreciated both the dishwasher and washing machine. The weather wasn't good and evenings were chilly but the heater and log fire are both available. We couldn't fault the cottage, it is one of the best we have ever stayed in and would love to visit again.

October Break

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a long weekend break at Hilltop Cottage.

I highly recommend this property...from our initial enquiry, right through to the end of our stay there were no hitches. It was straight forward and very easy.

The cottage itself is wonderful. There's full instructions about where to find things and how things work (should you not be too sure). There is plenty of coal, logs, kindle and fur lighters for the awesome fire. An abundance of candles and even milk in the fridge (and biscuits!).

Everything was spotless and you had everything you could need.

The area is a great base and the village has a lovely pub and beautiful walks right from the door.

Don't forget to take a look at the castle (it's lit up at night).

We would definitely book again when visiting this part of the country.

Brilliant stay, no complaints, deffo return

  • 5 of 5

The village of Bowes is a beautiful area which was made even better by this choice of accommodation. The cottage is spacious and has everything you need for your stay.

There was more than enough logs/coal (not that we really needed it as weather was great!)

Also there is a welcome pack which shows you how to use everything and where everything is.

Before I even read this it seemed common sense that towels would be in the airing cupboard so I don't understand previous complaints.

Again regarding cleanliness we found to be spotless and any cobwebs where to be expected outside since it is the country!

Plus the owners where available if we needed anything but I guess some people like to have a moan!

The garden is a little sun trap and you could see birds nesting which was lovely.

Bowes castle is right behind the property which leads down to the river which was beautiful and a great walk for dogs

Barnard Castle is only 5 minutes away which was a lovely little town with lots of shops/cafes/pubs/restaurants

There is a nice little pub right across the road which serves lovely food and also had a band on and a seating area at the back

All in all I would definitely stay here again and recommend Hill Top to friends and family.

Thank You!

Sadly not what I was hoping for

  • 3 of 5

Cottage is nice enough, but wasn't very clean on our arrival-so I had to start cleaning. Carpets not vacuumed, furniture was dusty, spiders & cobwebs all over the place (my daughters wardrobe was the worst-she refused to go in, as the cobwebs were that bad on day 1) & the fact that moths appeared everywhere, everyday (about 5-6 per day) was an issue, crumbs in the grill pan, oven was dirty, a vase on the landing window sill had some kind of liquid in there (assume water) but had mould growing inside it, two towels had been provided (for 3 of us for a week!).

On arrival the heating wasn't on & it was an average of 12C outside, the owners had left details on how to switch the boiler onto heating, but not how to turn the thermostat up which was set at 16/17C, so it was freezing for our first evening. Once I realised what the issue was, I googled the thermostat & sorted that.

The parking is on the street (which wasn't an issue as it's so quiet in the village), there's no barbecue, or egg cups, or a corkscrew!

But on a positive note, the beds were clean, & you do get tea & coffee on arrival! There was a leak whilst we were there, from the shower & I called the owner who got a plumber out straight away to get it sorted.

Could be a lovely cottage though, just needs to be cleaned a bit more thoroughly.

Owner's Response: We were very disappointed to receive this review. We did have a problem with our cleaner that particular week but we always leave our contact details in the cottage and state ' If you have any problems please give us a call' Unfortunately this lady didn't contact us about any issues until she left. If we had been informed on her arrival that she considered things to be unacceptable, we would have been there in 10 minutes and sorted it out. Towels: Yes, 2 towels are left out in the bathroom, but in the airing cupboard (where the boiler is) there is a further 10 if required (there are only so many hooks to hang towels) This lady obviously went into the airing cupboard to turn on the heating and would have seen a large stack of towels in front of her!! Central Heating: Yes again, we left the boiler on Hot Water only with instructions which button to press on the boiler to turn the heating on. No need to google for the instructions on the thermostat - they are printed on the thermostat itself! The temperature was not set at 16 degrees, from 4.00pm it is set at 21 degrees. There is also a wood burning stove in the lounge with loads of wood, coal, kindling and firelighters supplied and a gas heater in the kitchen. Outside Temperature: on 28 May, the outside temperature was 16 degrees not 12 !!! Parking on the Street: Yes it is, directly outside the cottage! Barbeque/Eggcups/Corkscrew: Firstly, we hope the lack of eggcups didn't cause Ms Woodward too much distress and spoil the enjoyment of the cottage. We do however provide a barbeque but don't advertise the fact, and only bring it out of the shed in the Summer months (at a outside temperature of 12 degrees, (according to ms Woodward) who wants it !!!!!! ) This is our first year and we will buy eggcups and a corkscrew for those guests who prefer wine in bottles with corks. Again, we are very disappointed that we were not advised of any problems, especially as we spoke to this guest on the Monday of her stay and asked if everything was satisfactory, She said everything was ok. What more can you do!! Hilltop Cottage is a beautiful place which we take great pride in and are constantly striving to improve. We now do the cleaning ourselves and still leave our contact details should anything not be to your satisfaction. Phil and Elaine Smith
